Sunset Valley Golf Course

About
Sunset Valley Golf Course is consistently ranked as one of the best public courses in New Jersey. It is one of four golf courses in the Morris County Parks system and it's considered the toughest. Located in Pompton Plains, the course is nestled in a wooded valley. It has a dramatic topography that provides plenty of ups and downs throughout the golf course. Golfers can expect a variety of elevation changes as well as a few blind shots and forced carries. Strategically placed bunkers come into play along the fast, undulating greens and mature trees line the rolling fairways. Water hazards come into play on a few holes too. Sunset Valley Golf Course's final three holes present one of the area's toughest finishes. The trio begins with the uphill par-5 16th and then finishes with two long par 4s.

Vets against FD
really enjoy the course unfortunately most course and this one do not do Veterans Discount if you are not a county resident, or in general. many on Golf now do not offer such. so I may play again some day
Slopey Greens
Beautiful Golf course, challenging and unique.
A nice 18 hole layout, that favors good iron play.
The greens here are a bit on the slopes, some greens don't even have a flat part on it, and they are taken care of well, so the ball rides across the green. Be sure to use spin, and soft spinning balls, otherwise it's going to be a long day.
Great day
Second time playing -great course very challenging greens but pace of play was slowed down by people taking too long to find their balls.
Overall good
Not long, tricky tee shorts, fast and big greens. Overall good experience would recommend. Just don’t play slow, got paired with 2 newer players and the staff was “firm” with telling us. Which I get but also need to look at the whole picture.
Challenging 18 holes
Course was excellent. I was surprised when paying, I thought the golf cart was included. They charge per person for golf cart, which I think is a little unfair, if they are going to charge, they should reduce the cost. $23 cart fee/person is steep, most other courses are half that price or the cart is included in the round of golf. That and the food and drinks are a little pricy.
“County Course”
As it goes, it’s a “County Course”. With that being said, Morris County, you need to do better. Let’s compare this County course to another County course I frequent, Preakness Valley. Hands down, Preakness has this place beat by ten times over. Sunset has “par” course conditions (pun intended). The cart path is subpar at best. Plenty of holes and massive craters along with just a poor look. Paid 75$ to play and not worth the 75$. If you want to charge 50$ or 60$ the most, then yes, sure it’s worth it. Green and fairways are descent. Tee boxes are good and well maintained. The layout is good no complaints or any issues. But overall, the price isn’t worth it especially when you can head to Wayne and play the “County Course” and it is much more well kept and appealing. Overall not bad will play here from time to time. But with prices sitting at 75$+ there are better options for that price and even less.
$90 (with cart) is steep for a county course, however this course is always very well maintained.
Great layout
Good layout- found friendly 3 some to play with and helpful staff
