Sunset Valley Golf Course

About
Sunset Valley Golf Course is consistently ranked as one of the best public courses in New Jersey. It is one of four golf courses in the Morris County Parks system and it's considered the toughest. Located in Pompton Plains, the course is nestled in a wooded valley. It has a dramatic topography that provides plenty of ups and downs throughout the golf course. Golfers can expect a variety of elevation changes as well as a few blind shots and forced carries. Strategically placed bunkers come into play along the fast, undulating greens and mature trees line the rolling fairways. Water hazards come into play on a few holes too. Sunset Valley Golf Course's final three holes present one of the area's toughest finishes. The trio begins with the uphill par-5 16th and then finishes with two long par 4s.

Very slow play. No Rangers to move things along. 5+ hours to play 18 holes. No drinking water on the course. We saw the Beverage Cart on the 17th hole. Never again for me!
Just OK
TBox, fairways and greens were good, the rest needs work. Cart paths, and rough were exactly that, rough. Lots of brown patches, grass was basically backyard grass with lots of weeds. Try to look elsewhere unless you get a good deal on this.
Double charged for cart?
Booked as a double. My partner and I were both charged the full price for a cart, $23 each. Why? $46 for a cart is wild.
Poor condition
This course is not in good shape. This used to be pretty decent course few years ago. Course conditions don't justify the price. Carts were in poor shape, dirty with previously used napkins stuck in the cup holder, not much power in them and they charge $ 23 per person. It is the highest cart price I have ever seen. Tee boxes were in pretty bad shape. Ball washers had no water and they were filthy. There was no drinking water on the course, one just has to buy it from the cart lady. I will not play this course ever again unless they make lot of improvements.
One of my favorite public courses in NJ
Excellent course that is both challenging and very fun to play. The picturesque backdrop doesn’t just either.
Avoid course at all cost
Before we even started the round, the woman who was starter was beyond miserable and holding up people at start. We played almost a 5 hour because pace of play was so bad. We were last group off course the staff told us to finish then got mad at us for not finishing “quick enough” even though we all parred out. The greens will ruin your round as well very fast and bad slopes. Overall from the staff to the course it was a terrible experience . My friend and I who were riding together were charged 20 a person for cart even if you ride together.
Not Great
I recently had the opportunity to play at Sunset Valley Golf Course, and I have to say, it was a rather disappointing experience. We played on a scorching 91-degree day, and the conditions were far from ideal.
First and foremost, the grounds were like cement. The fairways were so hard that it felt like hitting off a cart path. The ball would bounce excessively, making it incredibly difficult to control and predict shots. It was like we were playing on a concrete surface rather than a well-maintained golf course.
Adding to the frustration were the cart path restrictions. Despite the ground being hard as a rock, we were required to keep our carts on the path. This made little sense, considering the condition of the fairways. With the ground so firm, there seemed to be no risk of damage from carts, yet the restrictions were strictly enforced. This led to unnecessary walking in the intense heat, detracting from the overall experience.
Sunset Valley Golf Course must address these issues to improve the playing conditions. Proper maintenance of the fairways and a reevaluation of cart path policies, especially on extremely hot days, would go a long way in enhancing the experience for golfers. Until these improvements are made, I would hesitate to recommend this course to fellow golfers. I would also add that the carts are 1st come 1st serve. It should be included with the Golf Now price. It's a good 25.00 course NOT 75!!!
Ohh those greens
Loved the course, Staff was super friendly. Tee boxes, and fairways, were in good shape. The greens are in great shape and extremely difficult. Pay close attention to the mountains, valleys, and most importantly, the people putting before you. The ball goes in directions that seem to defy gravity. My only complaint would be the pace of play. It's amazing the amount of people that have no idea what golf etiquette is! If you cant get out of a sand trap after 6! Yes 6 attempts! Please pick it up and move along. They need an active Ranger to push people along. Other than that, I would definitely recommend this course to a friend
JUNETEENTH, HOLIDAY PRICE, & GOLF CARTS $$$
$23 for cart rental $$$$, I had to pay more than what Golfnow offered me, because Juneteenth is a holiday and had to pay extra.
