Although it's only an hour from New York City, the Garrison's secluded location nestled in the Hudson Highlands makes it feel much further. Perched 800 feet above the Hudson River, the 18-hole Garrison golf course offers panoramic views of the river and the surrounding mountains. As beautiful as the rolling hills are, they provide a challenging topography that will keep you from being distracted by the scenery. The rolling greens are flanked with bunkers and water. In addition to the uphill, downhill, and side hill lies, you can expect a few tough carries over deep ravines and stands of mature oaks along the fairways. The elevation changes are especially dramatic on the front nine while the back nine is a bit more open and forgiving, but you'll still need accuracy throughout the entire golf course.

Not what it used to be
Tees - 3/5
Fairways - 3/5
Greens - 3/5
Bunkers - NA (didn't go into any)
I've played this course literally hundreds of times. But this was the first time in a while. I have to say... it's a real shame the condition it was in. Greens were extremely slow, when they used to be relatively fast 10-15 years ago. Fairways were so so. Some seemed as if they hadn't been cut in a few days. While others were in pretty decent shape and cut close. Tee boxes are an absolute mess here. Most of them aren't even flat. You're hitting off of a curved surface half the time. The staff that I encountered were very friendly, but there was no ranger on the course. And while aI played extremely fast (finished the fist 14 holes in just over 2 hours), when I got to the 16th hole, the course came to a stand still. The last three holes took an hour. There was a group of Asian players (12 of them) who decided that they were going to play the last three holes as a group. Seriously, who does this? It's beyond rude to the other players and extremely messed up golf etiquette. A ranger would've prevented this.
What you're really paying for here, are the views. The view off the 1st tee and a few holes on the back 9 is absolutely unreal. But that doesn't matter when.you get stuck behind a 12some. Get some rangers out there and fix the course. It's really gone downhill.
Overall fun course
Course was definitely a challenge-shots needed to be shaped correctly. Paired up with a couple other singles, my playing partners were more beginners, so the round was a bit long. The place to eat food after the round was outside, so no relief from the heat. Staff was fine, great views of the Hudson.
Totally worth it.
Great course, and the best for the money. It’s significantly less money than other courses in the area, including the county courses. The course conditions are almost always excellent. On par with higher end courses in the area, but for 2/3’s the price.
The views of the Hudson are beautiful.
Some holes play a little tight,, and the greens are fairly small, but always in fantastic shape. I love playing here and have made it my go to course.
Slowest Greens
Pros:
Tight course
Great views, quaint
Very quiet
Cons:
Weedy rough, lost balls when in play (found a lot too, so this must happen a lot)
Slowest greens I’ve played in New York. Makes the undulations in the greens almost impossible as you take a full backswing on your putts
Had just cut grass, clippings everywhere
For $55, I could’ve played Bethpage.
Challenging Course
Run very loosely. No starter and no golf cars available when we arrived. Very backed up waited on most holes but enjoyed our day. Would play again
Great Views and fun
the putting is very hard as all greens seem to be on 30 degree slope but it was fun
Fathers Day Treat
Played The Garrison for Fathers Day today and it was as usual a great day! Beautiful weather, course in great contrition and played well!!! From the minute you arrive the friendly staff makes you feel at home and there’s no pressure to play quick on a busy day. The scenery is second to none with views of West Point and the Hudson River! Just Love this course! Highly recommend it!
Tight, expensive, lacking service
The front nine are quite tight, blind shots and a challenge but fair. It opens in the back to get your confidence back before you leave. Views of the river are off the chart. Biggest complaint was no coffee at 8am, no cart person when it’s 80 degrees and and no food available for lunch. For $85 you’d expect to be able to buy a Gatorade during the round and a hot dog after. Used to be a great venue.
Beautiful course
Course was very wet after two days of rain but still held up well. Besides the greens being a little chewed up in some spots, which is basically unavoidable as a public course, it was in great shape.
Stunning views and great course
This is definitely 1 of the best public courses in the area! They keep the course in phenomenal shape even with all the rain we've had. Great value for your money !
