Putnam County Golf Course

Enjoyed the course. Some very challenging greens. Interesting holes. Nice Par 3's.

Note: The nines have been switched, so we started on what used to be hole #10. I will refer to that side as the front nine for the purpose of this review. Not sure if they will switch it back.

The first 9 holes are quite dynamic, hills, doglegs, a short downhill par 4, tricky short par 3's with some significant elevation changes. It would have been helpful to get some course knowledge about how to approach some holes (slopes of some greens were very significant!). Back 9 was a little more straightforward, but still had some character. Holes were a little longer, but greens were a little less sloping. Overall a pleasant experience, course was in very good shape, especially for mid/late September, and a great price! Can't really comment on amenities in our current Covid situation, not really fair to this or any course.

Played on 10/3/20. Came here bc I was able to get a noon tee time on a Saturday. I live 5 miles east of Bethpage State Park and all the times were taken where I would be able to get all 18 holes in. Plus I like to leave the Island for fall rounds. 1hr 20 minutes to play the 1st 3 holes! Had a foursome ahead of us. At the 1st tee box one of the guys said they were going to wait for the threesome ahead of them to get off the green before they start teeing off. That should’ve been a red flag for things to come. I swear he said this. One guy had no business playing the sport of golf. I’ll be nice and assume he just started. All day we were waiting for these guys. Get to the tee box and the horrible player would drop a 2nd ball after his drive(more like a 4-6-3 or 6-4-3 double play grounders) while we were waiting for their group! The newbie should’ve been told “Hey just pick up” etc. nope! His buddies had no business playing the sport either but atleast 1 of them had etiquette. No ranger at this place so be careful before you make a 2 hr trip from the middle of L.I. Started at 12:30pm and ended at 6:28 pm! Pathetic. Only getting a 2 star bc staff is nice and the 3 guys I played with were really nice guys.

Worst starter I’ve ever dealt with. We booked for 2 people and showed up 20 minutes before our tee time. Walked up to the starter after checking in saying that we are ready, meanwhile no one on the first tee at all. Putted around for a bit and went backup him, meanwhile a couple other people showed up saying yeah the rest of our group is coming very shortly. He then told us we’re after the two foursomes who were late for their tee time. You would think it would make sense to let a two some out before the four some especially with them being late. So of course we played a 5 hour round after that and not a ranger in sight. A shame because the course was in pretty good shape, especially considering it being in October. Won’t be heading back here anytime soon.

Arrived on time to tee off. It was just two of us. We saw the first tee was open and asked if we could head down. Starter informed us that there were two groups of foursomes that were waiting for a couple of people and we were behind them.

It turned out they were all buddy buddy as I have never seen a course allow a delay because of people being late for their tee time. This ended up extending out to the golf course. There were no rangers to be found to keep the pace of play up. Ended up waiting about 15 minutes past our tee time to tee off, 5 hour round.

With all that said, the course is in very good condition as long as you keep it in the fairway. Nothing but leaves everywhere else.

The greens are A+.

If you can get the first tee time of the day, I guess you would be good to go but something tells me only friends of the course get those.

Great course, 1st time certainly won’t be last. Nice layout and good for all skill levels. Pretty wide open so driver friendly, has some long par 4’s and gettable par 5’s. Has country club feel great facility can’t wait to be back

Played on September 19, 2020. Had a great time. Conditions were very good - please fix your mall mark.

The course is nothing at 1st that jumps out at you. Straight rectangle holes tree lined on either side. Having said that the course makes the most of its landscape and like any course you need to hit straight and pick your landing area. The greens are very good with lots of undulations. Bunkers guard the greens in all the right spots.

Off the whites a mid handicapper will have a decent round. Back tees are a little more difficult.

This is my fourth time at Putnam and it gets better each time I come. The course is wide open which is great if you’re a beginner like myself. Lost balls get expensive after a while, but that’s because of my nasty slice. I’ll definitely come back.
