Putnam County Golf Course
About
Nestled in the Lower Hudson Valley, Putnam County Golf Course enjoys a scenic location amid rolling hills yet it’s not too far from the city. Formerly known as Putnam National, the club was originally opened as a private club in 1959, it opened to the public when it was bought by the county in 2004 but it continues to offer the quality and amenities of a private country club. The golf course has front and back nines that are completely different from one another so be prepared to use all the clubs in your bag. Water hazards only come into play on two holes but don’t let that fool you, this course is formidable even for avid golfers. Putnam County Golf Course's final four holes are an especially challenging stretch that will test you with everything from uphill lies to a slew of strategically placed bunkers.

Great conditions , excellent greens
Had second tee time so pace was perfect 3.5 hr round. Will go play there again in the future.
Bring your hard hat!
It took 4 hrs to play the front, about 2 hrs. On the back 9.
6 hrs is not acceptable!
Very dry greens and fairways.
Very narrow fairways, I think a heard " Four" more times that day, then all the rounds I every played, combined.
Don't plan to ever play there again.
Surprisingly fast play on Sunday
Have been playing this course for 15 years and it was the quickest it's ever moved. Weather was bad, so that could have been a factor. Played for 70% hot deal and was incredible value for the price. Tee box, greens, and overall course was in one of the best shapes I've seen it in.
Nice Course
I found Putnam to be a very good course in difficulty and layout. greens were in really good shape, fairways were a little heavy for me but overall nice. My buddy and I were playing on an extremely hot day but we were disappointed with the cart service.
Good Course
With the new ownership they have really put some money into this course. I played on what in the past would have been a wet soggy mess ended up being completely dry. They have spent some money on drainage which was very much needed. Good job!
Impressed!
I had previously heard mixed reviews on Putnam County GC, but gave it a shot regardless. I was impressed with the layout and course as a whole (variety of holes, short and long par4's, doglegs, greens on the smaller side with plenty of undulation, greens were smooth and quick, elevation change, and you didn't feel like you played the same hole twice). I could have done without the 16th hole, but other than that I was definitely impressed. I would, and will, play this course again!
Don't waste your time
I will say that the course itself is very nice, relatively well kept, and clean, but the waiting was just absolutely unacceptable. I completely understand that there will be waits on courses as the months get warmer here, but at a 4:00 PM tee off time, on a Sunday, it should NEVER take nearly 3.5 hours to play 9 holes. I paid for 18, but didn't even bother with the back 9 because it would have been pitch black by the time I finished. I doubt I'll go back, which is a shame. Also, putting a "practice range" in between holes 17 & 18 is just absurd and not well thought out.
First Trip Here
This was our first time playing this course. Very pleased with its condition, considering the most recent run of colder weather we've had. Course was very green and well maintained. The greens were surprisingly fast, and this caught us off guard the first few holes, especially since it rained earlier this week. Our only complaint was the pace of play. Slowww. They need to have a ranger or two out there to move groups along. A Thursday morning round shouldn't take 4:45. Outside of that, we were very pleased.
Best public facility around
The course is getting better every year. Greens are faster then most public courses around and well maintained. Fairways are lush. Trap improvements are ongoing so is the cart path renovation project. The course, in my opinion is underrated as far as slope and Rating is concerned. Long, challenging holes especially if the wind is up. The back nine offers great elevation changes and a good amount of over water shots.
17 and 18 are strong finishing holes. Accurate Tee shots are a must.
Putnam golf course- You should play here
Greens are in great shape.
Fairways are in good shape.
Sand traps are well maintained.
Course management should have on course rangers to improve pace of play.
Friendly staff.
Very nice surprise!
Haven't played the course in over 10 years, didn't know what to expect, great improvements, the greens were rolling true and fast, we played as a twosome so expected the pace to be an issue on a mid day Sunday round early season with good weather but was pleasantly surprised to finish in under 4 hrs, a three and foursome let us play thru which always shows the type of characters that frequent the course. I will def be playing here again later in the season.
Great place to play
Very cold day. Course was in outstanding shape. Greens were perfect. Folks there were very friendly. Would like to play again in the warmer weather. Very scenic.
Outstanding golf course that we liked very much.
The course was clean that can find the ball right away even in Mobember.
The greens are all good shape that we can attention more to enjoy.
Long, Narrow and Enjoyable Public Course
The condition of the greens and fairways was typical of most public courses--adequate but not lush by any means. However, the pace of play was surprisingly smooth for a Sunday afternoon. And the best feature in my opinion is the length and layout of many of the holes. With several par 5's and long par 4's it's nice to be able to use every club. At the same time, for the average golfer there is less chance of loosing one's ball (despite narrow fairways in general) because the holes tend to abut one another with a smattering of trees rather than woods between them. A great course for the money, especially if you check on GolfNow. Also, except for a few of the bunkers the sand in the sand traps was soft sand--not hardpan.
Maintenance and oversight needed
This is a nice course but it needs some improvements on maintenance. Extensive areas of the fairway were dry, ground quite hard; much more irrigation needed. Greens recently aerated, which made putting more challenging; there was no warning that this was taking place.
I played in this course some time ago, apparently it was a private club then. Among other features, there was oversight on pace of play, which was very useful. Apparently not anymore. Becoming a public course has led to loosing some former attributes.
Has potential
Course was very hard, greens being aerated. Has made improvements from the prior time 3 years ago
Putnam
Good track...this time of year however, greens got aerated. I would play it again.
Well Up-Kept, Challenging track
I have heard good things about this course and found a good deal on golfnow so decided to try it out me and a buddy. We got there early and they let us out right away, was a slower day despite it being a perfect weather forecast. I enjoyed the challenge and conditions of the course. Elevation is a big defense of the course and the greens were slippery even though it would seem because of the warm summer, and the hot dry weather in the week leading up to the round that they probably were protecting them and I bet in prime weather conditions they are even faster. Fairways and rough were in pretty good shape along with the traps. There was some bare spots and hardpan but mostly in places you don't deserve a clean lie. I definitely would go back and recommend this course.
Old School
This course reminds me of the old style tree lined courses. Hard to get into trouble, and a lot of elevation changes. Plays long. Staff are extremely friendly and the facility has a lot of other things taking place besides golf.
My first 18
Great course, it was my first 18 ever. I will never forget it, made an Eagle on hole #13! Wish the fairways were a little wider, tough controlling the driver, but that's probably my skill issue :)
