Putnam County Golf Course
About
Nestled in the Lower Hudson Valley, Putnam County Golf Course enjoys a scenic location amid rolling hills yet it’s not too far from the city. Formerly known as Putnam National, the club was originally opened as a private club in 1959, it opened to the public when it was bought by the county in 2004 but it continues to offer the quality and amenities of a private country club. The golf course has front and back nines that are completely different from one another so be prepared to use all the clubs in your bag. Water hazards only come into play on two holes but don’t let that fool you, this course is formidable even for avid golfers. Putnam County Golf Course's final four holes are an especially challenging stretch that will test you with everything from uphill lies to a slew of strategically placed bunkers.

convenience
Would definately play here more. This course just keeps on getting better and better. Good value.
Too short for me
I'm a golfer who loves to pick up a driver whenever possible. This course, however, is a bit too short with many dog legs. The course condition is ok, but it is designed more for iron lovers as well as beginners in that there just not enough "Out of Bounds" to take some penalties for your mistakes. Perhaps a little too forgiving and that kind of creates disinterest. Just not my kind of course.
better and better
Course is coming better during the summer. Think
There is a continuing vork that hopefully makes the course even better.
Playing Experience
Pace of play was a bit slow. No presence of rangers.
Improving, but Still a Work in Progress
Great day with good weather conditions, but the course stewards need to do a better job enforcing basic golf etiquette. The greens were in poor shape with divot and spike marks everywhere. Bunkers are mostly dirt/hardpack
Our group was told to speed up play, and there was an 80 year old man and a 60 year old woman in our 4-some. How rude!
We were nearly 1 hole ahead of the next 4-some.
Play This Course!
FIrst time playing this course, teed off the blue tees and it was great!! Distance was challenging on the front 9 especially for the par 4s. If you are an average golfer tee off from the whites. Tree lined fairways made it challenging coupled with the dog legs. I would def recommend playing this course!!
peter
The shape of the course is beautiful. Price is good and staff is nice. Condition of the course is good and green is challenging. I like this course.
Very good value.
The course was in very good condition despite the heavy rains the night before. While there was one area that had a small amount of standing water on 1 hole our group was very impressed with the condition of the golf course. Our group played 18 holes in 4 hours!
Great municable coarse
This course presents as a club. Big club house with nice facilities and pro shop, staff to take your clubs upon your arrival. Less than an hour from the city this coarse is worth the fee and the travel.
Good course, poor management by rangers
The course is in great shape, and they have done a lot of work on it in the past few months. Greens are well kept. The only issue is the "rangers" are nowhere to be seen. Yesterday I was paired up with another player, and we were stuck behind a 4 some of rookies who would not let us play through. We spent 15 holes waiting roughly 5 minutes between shots while a group of hackers took their time ahead of us. The ranger appeared around the 16th hole and even then did not say anything to the group ahead. Great course, poor management by the rangers.
Good and Bad
Course is in fine condition and greens ran true. Only problem was the play was extremely slow due to a couple of groups in front of our foursome. I had to ask the foursome in front of us after 11 holes to please pick up their pace as the group in front of them was two holes ahead. There should be a ranger on the course to ensure timely play.
Great value golf course
Some very long challenging holes you will get a lot of use of your hybrid and long irons.
Fun Course
I paid through Golf Now and got a round for me and my partner for $45 each and this review is based on that price. $69 is the regular price and I would not pay that much to play at Putnam.
The front nine are fairly flat, wide and not that difficult. If you like to pull out the whacking stick then 6 or 7 of the first 9 holes offer you the chance to use a driver. There are a couple of par 3's that seem easy but offer a little hidden challenge or two.
The back nine is different altogether. Some wide holes but slope comes into play. Hitting across water on 14 and 13, high uphill on 16 and my favorite all time hole; the par 4 12th. The tee is so high above the green it feels as if you can drive it from the tee and a professional probably can but there are risks if you try.
I have a slice that varies from slight to pronounced, Putnam is the best course for my slice. There are plenty of dog leg rights that my slice whips around.
Putting has been pretty good. I like fast greens and the three times I have played here this season, they have been like lightning. Fast but true, little in the way of bumps that move your ball and well maintained.
I usually shoot ~100 and I shot 102, 100 and 97 the three rounds I have played there.
I highly recommend this course.
Putnam County
Good course> worth the money. Course is slightly challenging
Putnam County CC is a good value
I didn't know what to expect but was very pleased with Putnam County CC. The course is well maintained and as I understand has had a lot of recent work. The course meanders around with several holes side by side by side. The greens were well manicured with lots of break. There were several interesting holes including one with a big elevation drop. It was fun to play.
Nice Course
Nice course and staff are very nice, friendly and helpful. Cart paths are under renovations. Will definitely play again
Pace of play was brutal
Nice course and like the greens. 6 hr pace of play. No rangers on the course to push play. Did not finish due to pace of play.
