Putnam County Golf Course
About
Nestled in the Lower Hudson Valley, Putnam County Golf Course enjoys a scenic location amid rolling hills yet it’s not too far from the city. Formerly known as Putnam National, the club was originally opened as a private club in 1959, it opened to the public when it was bought by the county in 2004 but it continues to offer the quality and amenities of a private country club. The golf course has front and back nines that are completely different from one another so be prepared to use all the clubs in your bag. Water hazards only come into play on two holes but don’t let that fool you, this course is formidable even for avid golfers. Putnam County Golf Course's final four holes are an especially challenging stretch that will test you with everything from uphill lies to a slew of strategically placed bunkers.

Slowest round ever!!!!!!
When you're backed up on every single tee box, waiting three groups deep, someone isn't doing their job. No excuse for this. We had to wait 5-10 in-between every single shot. Won't be going back there again.
Stay below the hole
course has been fixed up since last year Greens very good but see review title
Surprise!!!
Had not played here in over two years. Amazing improvements. Drainage issues resolved, fairways in excellent condition, greens almost perfect (except for golfers not repairing baa marks), pace of play very good. Staff very friendly and course Ranger could not have been more helpful and courteous.
Fast Greens
Even though the greens look sandy they are much faster and have more break then you would expect by looking at them
The only downfall of this course is that the front 9 is a shooting gallery. You are dodging other peoples shots all the time
enjoyed our day
Its the 4th of July and the course was almost empty. No waiting on any hole. Weather was not great but was able to play all 18 no problem
Early play
Course in great shape. Teed off at 7:17am & was done in just over 4 hours.
Speedy Greens!!
This course is spread out enough for the intermediate golfer to score well.. Other than some brown patches, fairways were in very good conditions. Tee boxes, for the most part are true to the distance. Greens, though, on a clear and dry day, are true but warp speed on many holes; penalizing for downhill putts not struck perfectly. Really nice pro shop; while inside snack bar is limited, the pub/grill has enough on menu for all tastes. Very good value and pace of play was much better than average.
Hole in one!
Got my first hole-in-one on this course hole number 16 with Highwinds greens a little tough but overall a nice course will play again
good course
The facility was in excellent condition staff were friendly. The course was in ok shape, but not great probably because of the hard weather we had this past winter, I played last year and it was great.I would definitely recommend this course to anyone. And is an open course
Must play
Great course, long but open. Will play again. Staff was friendly.
Greens are tricky
Some greens were fast and some seemed slower. Lots of rolling greens with tough pin positions. Not saying it's a bad thing it was just a little much for my skill range. Other then that it was beautiful. A little to many leaves but they were out there cleaning it up.
Putnam Nat'l Golf Review Oct 18, 2014
Nice fall day, but with fall comes plenty of leaves. It hurts when you have a nice drive down the middle and lose your ball because of the leaves. Practice green was fast, course greens moderate. No food at the turn. Not very happy about that. For the money, it was semi-ok. Will I play it again, probably. It would not be my first choice though.
Course great ...BUT
The golf course has been getting better and better , but due to pace of play hard to want to go back ,they advertise 41/2 he pace of play but no rangers out to enforce.
Having a great day
Greens were in great condition. Leaves were blown off the fairways. Felt like I was on vacation.
5 Hours 10 minutes
- 5 Hours 10 minutes to play 18 this past Sunday
- We waited on every shot
- No on course Ranger to move things along
- Good Conditions and layout
- GC Staff can wear jeans but golfers cannot
- They need to fix the pace of play. Take a note from Smith Richardson in CT. There the ranger goes by 3X on the front and 3X on the back. If a group is behind it doesn't last long.
Putnam National
We went out a few minutes late, but were stacked on top of each other well past the turn. Course had a lot of ground under repair including to future bunkers on 12 (I believe) that interfered with all four of our approach shots. Pro shop was very professional and courteous, as well as the starters. I can'
t say much for the Café/Grill which opens at 7am and wasn't prepared to serve until close to 8:30am without baked goods (rolls, bagels, etc.) WIFI and cell service at 19th hole was a no
Delightful and fun
Nice people, great pro shop, and course is in great shape. A ton of side hill holes just hit toward the right to keep it in play.
Driving range available but no drivers. Good to warm up.
Paired with friendly people. I will play it again.
Half a course
It sucks when your at the starter desk, and then you find out that the front nine is closed for routine maintenance. Thank you to the two people in the pro shop for not telling me, I would have left and went somewhere else. And on top of all that the starter held us up for 30 min past our scheduled tee time only to pair us with senior women... thanks putnam!!
