Putnam County Golf Course
About
Nestled in the Lower Hudson Valley, Putnam County Golf Course enjoys a scenic location amid rolling hills yet it’s not too far from the city. Formerly known as Putnam National, the club was originally opened as a private club in 1959, it opened to the public when it was bought by the county in 2004 but it continues to offer the quality and amenities of a private country club. The golf course has front and back nines that are completely different from one another so be prepared to use all the clubs in your bag. Water hazards only come into play on two holes but don’t let that fool you, this course is formidable even for avid golfers. Putnam County Golf Course's final four holes are an especially challenging stretch that will test you with everything from uphill lies to a slew of strategically placed bunkers.

Needs competent Starter
First, the good news, the course was cheap and relatively well maintained.
The bad news: this is what i encountered on the course, in no particular order:
1. 4 10 year old kids driving a cart, and 1 of them drove it on the green.
2. A fivesome on the tee box.
3. There were 8 groups on 2 holes (the biggest group being a 3some).
4. in those 8 groups, there were 2 singles and 5 2somes, all allowed to go out on the course following each other.
5. A woman in a 2some in front of me, hitting 3 balls off the first tee, 1 during her practice swing, the second a terrible shot.
Enough said i think.
the greens have some undulations
the greens were aerated the week before but still had good pace. some challenging holes. good golfnow price.
Yes, it does have two distinct nines:
As mentioned, both on their website and other reviewers, the front and the back are vastly different: The front is OK, but you should be aware of errant shots from other fairways, as the holes are bunched together, and are pretty straight forward: The back is better; the holes are more interesting, and are mostly seperated from one another: pace of play is a problem, but that's sadly prevelant these days: Don't pay full blown retail, but worth a look if you get a discounted rate:
Very good conditions. Grass condition excellent on entire course.
Nicely laid out course.no thin grass areas on tees, greens, fairways,or rough. Visually attractive course.Enjoyed playing here, will be back.
Local course
I enjoy playing there because of the location. The staff is very friendly and accomodating.
Improved conditions
Course conditions are consistently improving under the new ownership
Good course...very quick and tough greens... Starter would not let us have lunch after 9 holes...said would back up other players???
Good course...very quick and tough greens... Starter would not let us have lunch after 9 holes...said would back up other players??? This ruined it for us...probably won't come back.
Played this course many times.
This course has been kept well after new management took over this year. I've played this course many times and always enjoy it. Tee boxes, fairways and greens are maintained. The only down side is if you play after a day of rain, the drainage is a problem. Bunkers were updated this year and water hazard is only a problem in two holes. Overall I enjoy this course.
Just a nice course to play..
Played a bunch of courses in the area and I would put this one in the richter, centennial and candlewood valley cc class.
Showing signs of improvement
In past years this course was always notorious for very long rounds, and being run by high schoolers. But it looks like some of the operational changes the course has recently underwent are paying off. Course conditions were great, and staff was courteous and knowledgable. There was a cart girl, but lacked a ranger on the course. Now we were very fortunate that the foursome in front of us realized after seeing us(twosome) waiting on the tee box for three holes that they were slowing us down and did the right thing by waived us through, otherwise it could have easily been a 4.5hr round!
Solid "county" type course
The front 9 is a little 'municipal' for my taste. Every hole is a pretty straight forward up and down that's on top of each other. People will be on your fairway and I'm sure you'll be on theirs, and that can get a little annoying after a few holes. It's not as if the holes are bad, or aren't maintained, they're just nothing special. Plus they're wide open, so they're fairly simple.
The BACK 9 is a different story. The holes are actually separate from each other and there's actual character for each hole too. Also, this is when the course picks up on difficulty too. Distance is definitely an issue so bring your driver and bring your fairway wood.
Overall the course is solid for the price. It's hard to find any average/above-average course on a Sunday morning for less than $60 + cart. There is a cart lady that came around quite often. The clubhouse is conveniently placed at the turn, so it's an easy in and out with a serviceable snack hut. I'd say the staff was N/A. They weren't rude or poor, they just weren't really an issue. I still have my receipt that I was supposed to give to the starter ha. There is a driving range too. I'd suggest it if you want to play a valued course on a weekend. I probably won't go out of my way to play it again, but I'm not disappointed that I played it.
great day of golf
No waiting, good pace of play, friendly staff. All in all a great day of golf!
Looking better...
Course is under new management as of 2013 and everything is looking much better tahn in the past. Many upgrades and renovations made to course and equipment!
Thanks Golf Now for the rate!
Tee boxes and fairways in good shape. Greens needed to be cut and rolled. Putting was near impossible. No rangers meant extraordinarily slow pace even though we had late afternoon start causing a 5 hour round. No towels at ball washers was annoying. But at the Golf Now price, I guess I shouldn't complain.
Good value course
Pros
--Good value
--Very friendly staff
--Decently maintained
Cons
--Almost overly straightforward layout
--No holes that stand out
Good things happening
OK so many the bunkers are still pretty rough (some have been redone) but overall this place has come a long way from the past few years. Greens and fairways were consistently nice and lush (weather has helped I'm sure) but I saw guys hand watering some of them, rangers, etc things I've never seen there, good things. Few of my friends don't care for the course and I think course condition and pace of play has had a lot to do with that- I feel its a good layout with a nice mix of birdie and tough holes and our foursome hit the 4 hour mark thru 17 on Sunday morning play. I'm not sure I'm crazy about the recent reversal of nines, I really liked those 2 tough par 4s at the end of the round. Certainly not a deal breaker and with conditions as they are course is a legit bargain for the area.
Good Course with Close holes
Nice course and a good value for your buck. Only problem I have is that the holes are pretty much on top of each other. All too often I am hitting a fairway shot and a bunch of golfers are talking way too loudly on the green on the hole nearby. I, personally blame the golfers as I am always aware of people shooting around me and do my best to keep it down!!! Course is in good shape and again is the best value I have found in the area to date. Starter is a nice guy and pretty much everyone is pleasant from beverage cart girls to pro shop!!!
Not worth it.
Putnam is not worth it anymore. Last season I would play Putnam every week because it was cheap, quick, and the course conditions didn't seem to bother me. I just went out there on a Friday morning and there were way too many people out on the course, it was WAY too expensive, and the conditions were very poor. After a lot of rain over a week ago, I would think the course would be fine and fresh. But there were many, many sloppy areas where you just wanted to pick your ball up and put it somewhere else. There are some of these holes that are disgustingly muddy and then there are some that are hard as a rock. Almost every tee box was a struggle just to stick the tee in the ground. There were no rangers on the course keeping the pace of play going.
There were landscapers on almost every hole, too. While it's good that they are trying to improve the course (always trying, never succeeding), this is a distraction and it slows down play on the busy Friday morning.
I'm really just sick of this course. After the price increases this year, do not even bother unless its a twilight time or a GolfNow Hot Deal. Go to centennial instead.
Not bad for your money
It's a Putnam county course and you can tell that they are trying. If you go after it rains be prepared to get muddy and the drainage on the course is not good. There are a couple of nice holes though.
OURSE WAS IN EXCELLANT SHAPE CONSIDERING THE ANT OF RAIN WE HAVERECEIVED RECENTLY.
COURSE WAS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION CONSIDERING THE AMOUNT OF RECENT RAIN
