Quail Creek Golf Course
About
Quail Creek Golf Club is tied for being the most difficult public course in the St. Louis area. Designed by Hale Irwin, the course is laid across rolling hills laced with meandering streams. The layout requires accuracy with narrow fairways and hard-to-read greens. Water hazards come into play frequently as do trees and bunkers. It is a formidable test for any skill level. Most of the holes have a risk-reward element, making the course more accessible by placing an emphasis on strategy over strength. One of the most memorable holes is the par-5 ninth. It will favor golfers who successfully cut the corner, making it possible to reach the green in two. This tricky hole demands accurate mid-iron play. Quail Creek Golf Club finishes with an interesting par 4 that has water along the left side of both the fairway and green.

Almost FUBAR
I grew up playing this course in high school and college. It was always in great condition then. Fast forward to today. And before I begin, the staff is doing a great job on customer service, but they are trying to squeeze every golfer out there possible at the detriment to pace and course quality.
Fairways are long, slow, and lots of crabgrass is invading.
Greens - never before have I had to adjust my speed based on how much grass vs. dirt is in my line. Huge spots of dirt, barely any areas of good solid green bigger than a 6 foot diameter. Just very, very bad.
Quail Creek - make an investment. Stop piling people out there adding traffic. Keep the traffic down. Don't let people play music loudly. It's becoming a complete dump out there. Seriously.
We paid 27 each and I feel it was at least 7 dollars too much.
Quail Creek 9-14-16
Fairways and tees were in great shape for the most part, but about half the greens had some large bad spots and a couple of the "sand" traps were really just raked dirt
Thanks for your review! Happy that you had a good time! Come back and play again soon!
If not for the greens!
Great course. A few long par 4s.
Many of the greens are in horrible condition.
Fairways were nice.
Thanks for playing! We're happy to hear that you enjoyed the fairways. Please come back and play again soon!
This was once a great course
Quail creek was at one time a top notch golf course here in St Louis. The layout is still interesting and a challenge. Unfortunately, the overall condition of the course is pretty bad. I didn't find issues with the tee boxes or the fairways but the greens and bunkers are atrocious. The greens range from barely fair to bad. Way too many large blotches of dead grass and dead areas. It's tough to get a ball to run even close to true. They need to gut them and start from scratch.
The bunkers aren't much more than silt laden river sand that gets hard when it dries out. Your ball never nestles into the sand but sits up on top. Then it becomes a game of chance with your bunker shot. The club either manages to dig in and take some sand or it bounces off and you skull the ball across the green. The bunkers need to be gutted as well and redone.
Lots of potential here. A great Hale Irwin design that keeps you interested. One can only hope they can turn this one around.
Thanks for playing! We appreciate your feedback and will be taking your comments into consideration moving forward. Please come back and play again soon!
Awful
This course gets worse every year. The greens are absolutely terrible. Bunkers have weeds growing out of them and it is dirt not sand. It seems like no one is doing anything to maintain it. If you like putting over mud then an occasional weed in your line waste your money here. Shame on me for being fooled twice hearing it got better. The front door to get in doesn't even work.
We're sorry to hear that you had a poor experience. Please come back and give us another chance! Thanks for playing.
What happened?
Not quite sure what happened here, but when the course changed ownership several years ago and had new management and head greens keeper the course really improved in terms of condition and playability. It now has undergone a compete turn around and not for the better. I understand a new greens keeper was brought in last year. The condition of the course is at its all time worst, even from before the ownership change. The bunkers were in deplorable condition and were unplayable with many large weeds and grasses. Some tee boxes were unusable and were just dirt, mud and tall grass/weeds. Greens were in very poor shape. This used to be my home course, don't think I'll go back unless things improve. This course used to be considered "High End", and once held a USGA-US Open qualifying, sad to see it's demise into a "goat track".
Why so bad
Greens and sand bunkers where un usable I'm not going back!
We're sorry that we didn't meet expectations. We hope you'll give us another shot!
Makeover
My understanding is that the previous owner/manager let the course deteriorate to its present state. Greens are splotchy, supposedly several grass varieties were mixed in, and are presently being brought back to one. Fairways are several types of grass. The potential is there, just don't know how long it will take to turn it around. In their favor all the rain hasn't helped. Back 9 better than front 9.
Thanks for your feedback. We're working hard to get our conditions back to up to par and we appreciate you bringing these details to light. We are looking into your concerns. Thanks for playing and please come back and play again soon!
Poor greens
The staff was very friendly. Guess they need to be with the condition of the course. Most tee boxes are mud. All the greens are dirt and just poor. Was a good thing it was only 22 to play 18. I'll never go back for any other price. Poor golf course. 4some in front of us had music blaring. The marshal didn't care. Slow play. Again. Just a poor 18 rounds. Maybe others were better. But mine sucked.
We're sorry to hear that we didn't meet expectations. We're working hard to get our conditions back to standards we would normally expect this time of year. Please give us another shot and play again soon!
Tough Test - Friendly Staff
Beautiful location. Friendly, accommodating staff. I enjoyed the experience.

Not worth the money
The bare bones are there but the course has fallen on hard times. The weeds growing in the bunkers, the large dead areas on the greens, and the patchy fairways make this decent course hardly worth the $28 each our group paid to play.
The staff was courteous and kind but there is only so much they can do with the condition of the course being what it is. Not sure I would go back...

Terrible conditions, awesome layout.
Greens are a bit above average. Tees are below average. Bunkers are unplayable. Fairways and rough are average. Would be one of the best courses in St. Louis if the conditions were better.

Nice layout but poor conditions tee to green, but greens ok.
Shot 83 playing here for the first time with a Golfnow $18 hot deal which was for 18 holes including a cart. Fantastic because regular senior daily rate is $34. The course was worth every penny of $18 deal but $34 is pretty steep for this rough tract. A regular walk-in price of about $22 might be more appropriate. Our threesome teed off on time and played in just under four hours. No waiting. It was a cloudy day with rain in the forecast but it never did rain so that forecast probably scared off a lot of golfers. The terrain is moderately hilly with nice elevation changes. The front nine is challenging but the back nine is even more challenging. The greens were in decent shape and held good approach shots but were pretty slow. Fairways were thin on grass and needed water but the rough was distinguishable from the fairway. Bunkers were full of weeds and grass making them unsightly although still playable. A greens keeper could spend one day spraying Roundup herbicide in all the bunkers and that would clear out the weeds and grass. The sand in the bunkers was playable/nice sand and all the bunkers were dry. I liked the course and will definitely return when I find another Golfnow Hot Deal here.

Nice Neighborhood Course
Pleasantly surprised after reading a few reviews. The course was busy and they were managing the flow well. They had a starter that was very attentive.
The fairways were dry, rough was cut to an appropriate height and the greens were very playable.
This is a great course if you are able to find a decent rate.
Nice snack bar in clubhouse.

Beginner golfer
Solid course, being a beginner golfer I shot from the silvers(don't laugh at me) which made it a pretty short course. Beautiful fairways, tough greens.

Thanks for playing Quail Creek and taking the time to give us your feedback! We love hearing that you enjoyed your round!! Come back soon!

Not there yet
The sand bunkers were over-grown, or flooded. All unplayable. The tee boxes were ragged. The greens were rock hard, but extremely slow (sort of defies logic). Hard to tell where the fairways are on certain holes. I heard from the people I played with that the conditions are getting better. This was a wonderful course 10 or so years ago, but it needs lots of care. The course has great bones, but it's not there yet.
We appreciate your feedback and are considering it as we move forward in trying to improve our course. We apologize for any inconvenience the course conditions may have caused you.
Horrible course management
There bunkers had little to no sand and held water there were half dead greens and tee boxes they had High school kid as a starter and let groups of 6 & 7 out on the course and wanted my two some to pair up with another so there wouldn't be slow play and we ran into the group of 6 on the front and got out before them on the back and ran in to a group of 7 the course used to be nice a few years ago and has gone downhill fast not worth the time or money for me to ever go back
Thank you for your feedback, it is helpful as we are constantly trying to improve the conditions of our course. We apologize for your poor experience with us.
What happened to Quail Creek?
This course was a real disappointment. Grass growing in a number of bunkers, quite a few greens in terrible shape, and what really made no sense was the color of their flags weren't even in the right position on most of the greens. Every course goes by red, white, and blue in the back, but not Quail Creek anymore. How stupid! If you can't even get that right, then you obviously just don't care about your course anymore. When we asked about it, they couldn't explain why. Lastly, they had a group of SEVEN playing so they had us tee off the back and when we made the turn, had to wait for 4 groups before we could tee off on one. Ugh! Been playing golf for 40 years and have never seen a sevensome playing on a Saturday morning. I wonder what T.D. Morris would have thought of his once very fine golf course? (God rest his soul)
We are sorry to hear that you had a disappointing experience with us. We appreciate your input and are working on improving our course.
Thank you for your review and feedback. We're sorry that you didn't have the best experience and that you felt like you overpaid for what you got. We're working hard on getting our course back to optimal standards and your input helps us. Thanks for playing and we hope to see you again soon!
