Quail Creek Golf Course
About
Quail Creek Golf Club is tied for being the most difficult public course in the St. Louis area. Designed by Hale Irwin, the course is laid across rolling hills laced with meandering streams. The layout requires accuracy with narrow fairways and hard-to-read greens. Water hazards come into play frequently as do trees and bunkers. It is a formidable test for any skill level. Most of the holes have a risk-reward element, making the course more accessible by placing an emphasis on strategy over strength. One of the most memorable holes is the par-5 ninth. It will favor golfers who successfully cut the corner, making it possible to reach the green in two. This tricky hole demands accurate mid-iron play. Quail Creek Golf Club finishes with an interesting par 4 that has water along the left side of both the fairway and green.

Give it a couple of years...maybe even next year.
Booked through golfnow...so the price was right...anything over $20 would be too much. The course is in rough shape right now, but you can see they are slowly fixing it...moles have gone under a few greens and fairways are very thin.
Quail Creek 1
The staff was average, the bathrooms were incredibly clean. The course, however, needs a ton of work. The grass conditions were rough, and the greens were embarassing. For a course that charges a premium, I'd expect more.
Just not worth it
I played here seven years ago and remembered a well kept, pristine facility but my round yesterday left me unimpressed. The greens were rough and weedy and the tee boxes left a lot to be desired. At the end of the round I could not envision myself paying anything more than a golfnow hot deal and to think they want $55 on the weekend is beyond reasoning.
It was okay
My perspective comes from when the course first opened. For the first several years, it was immaculate and you felt like you were playing a private club. I've probably played there 10 times total. I played a few years ago prior to the ownership change and it had become a goat ranch. I'd heard the new ownership was doing a better job, but hadn't played out there since until yesterday.
It was okay. Some areas were nice, some were pretty rough, but you can tell they are trying to make it better. Cart paths will give your kidneys a workout. I didn't eat anything or go into the bar area, so I can't comment on that or the service. The only person I dealt with was the guy I paid and he was pleasant.
One thing that isn't the fault of the course were the amount of divots on the greens. When did people just decide to stop fixing their ball marks?! It was hilariously bad on almost every green.
I'd play again, but would stick with the $35 or $25 rate. Not sure I'd want to pay much more.
QUAIL CREEK
Nice challanging course. First timers should try it from the White Tees.
Quail Creek on Golfnow
I booked a two some on Golfnow. When we arrived we were unknowingly forced into a foursome with a gentleman and his wife. The pace of play was slow and the conditions of the course were not worth the rate. The course and management think too highly of themselves.
Too crowded, slow.
Scramble tournament going on ahead of us that was slow moving. Made the turn and walkups were being sent off on #10 that slowed things even more. Quit after 9 holes. Clearly their concern is quantity not quality!
I am glad I ignored the reviews
I read all 33 reviews about Quail Creek and the only good ones were obvious fakes. Decimated fairways, crabgrass, hard pan, get new management, never going back. not worth the money, etc.
I played 18 holes July 8. It was a beautiful day, it had rained the night before (much needed) and the course was not crowded, so we got done in a snappy four hours while playing all 6980 yards.
The fairways I played in had no visible hardpan except in one or two minor areas under repair. While the fairways did not remind me of Old Warson, the were cut to a nice height to hit irons
The course looked verdant and scenic throughout and this contributed to my afternoon. This was one challenging day for me as I have no business playing from the back tees and I lost a bunch of balls. But I had great time. Also, as conceded by most crabby reviewers, the greens were in good shape. No puddles in the traps. Also true, there were guys on rolling machines all over and I got a snootful of exhaust once. They were plugging some fairways that day but even if the ball landed in a plug, we would have just kicked it a few inches and given ourselves a good lie.. But the ball never "plugged".
There is no reason that I could tell you to not play this place. Maybe if I had paid the rack rate I might feel different. I got senior discount. But me and my partner both agreed the bad reviews were much overbaked. I think you will be happy when you play this place. Bring a lot of balls.
Fairways were in bad shape
It had been a number of years since I had played Quail Creek. Remembered it as a much better maintained course. Fairways were in poor shape with a lot of weeds. Tee boxes weren't in best condition either. Greens were in decent shape. Course is beginning to really show its age. Cart paths are in poor condition in a number of places.
What a shame
Years ago this used to be one of the top 5 courses in the St. Louis area due to layout and course condition. Obviously the layout hasn't changed but the course conditions sure have. Hard and in some case bare tee boxes and fairways. Greens are mostly OK. Worst part about round was that one of the staff members was playing in the fivesome in front of us...yes fivesome.
Great Course Layout
I haven't played this course in a while but always like to because of the fun layout. The tee box's aren't in great shape but the greens are amazing and fairways are coming in nicely. Staff was friendly and pace of play was pretty good considering its a challenging course. I will definitely be back!
Last time this year
Tee Boxes were not very good, fairways needed work, the greens were excellent. Almost every hole we had to deal with groundskeepers running lawn mowers around us. They need to stop and let the golfers play.
A Good Challenge
I enjoyed my round. The course requires a number of shots. You cannot pull out the driver on every hole off the tee since the fairways are tight. You have to use every club in the bag to get through the round.
What a Turn around!!!
I played this course about a month ago, and fairways and tee's were very rough. What a difference a month has made and the weather has helped the bermuda come in. They just aerated their fairways, and you can tell a huge difference already. The staff was one of the most friendliest I have encountered at a golf course in a long time. Greens are always excellent at this golf course and I will definitely be returning. Great layout and fair prices!!!
Continuing to Slide
I understood that this course was under new management as of 2 to 3 years ago, so I thought I'd give it another try. During the first few years this course was open, in the late 80's and early 90's it was fantastic! After that it gradually deteriorated. Now, the greens are in very good shape and the bunkers are well maintained. However, the fairways, rough, and tees are simply atrocious. In the fairways, there is a mix of different grasses and weeds with bare spots and hardpan all over the place. The rough has large areas of clover and the tees are so hard with bare spots, that if you actually find a spot with grass, its hard to get the tee in the ground. Major, major disappointment as it remains a great layout with some very interesting and fun holes. My suggestion would be to close the course for 3 months, replace the fairways with zoysia, and work on restoring it to its original condition.
BEST FEATURE; THE SCORECARD
Course has gone severly downhill. Pro Shop personnel unfriendly and not helpful. Por T boxes, fairways and fringe. Weeds and bare spots abound
Not that great
The greens were in excellent condition but the rest of the course was horrible. There was almost no grass on any fairway and the rough was terrible. it was virtually impossible to play the ball down anywhere on the golf course.
not worth $
Tee box and fairways are mostly weeds. there are much nicer courses in the area for the same amount of money.
No grass to hit from
I have played here many times but not in a year the new owner is trying to improve the course but the fairways were horrible and some of the greens had bad spots on them tuff to put through Before I play it again going to let Bermuda fairways come in I would not recommend this course now
great greens
Wonderful greens, great venue, great layout,
Wonderful day
This must be a representative from Quail Creek... If not then I would like to understand what could possibly happened between when I played and this past weekend. My first guess would be brand new sod laid... But that would have cost a LARGE fortune!
