Talega Golf Club
About
Talega Golf Club is one of southern California's treasures, offering a challenging Fred Couples layout that sits above the "Spanish Village by the Sea." The course winds through canyons and valleys offering scenic views of the surrounding countryside throughout. The diverse layout will test your shot-making skills and there are also several interesting risk-reward opportunities including two reachable par 4s that will please long hitters. There is an abundance of bunkers coming into play, especially along the fairways, and golfers will be faced with the occasional blind shot. The greens are extremely quick and not a single one is flat. Nearly every green has multiple tiers. Water hazards also come into play on a few holes. One of Talega's most memorable holes is the monstrous 13th. This par 5 requires a carry over not just one but two ravines.

Talega Golf Club Suggestions
Played Talega for the first time. The course and layout are challenging and fun to play. However, basic maintenance needs to be addressed. For example, grass and weeds growing out of sand traps are unacceptable - it's a simple fix and just takes a disciplined approach by staff and the grounds crew. In addition, many of the traps needed raking - since we played at 10:30 am, I doubt if significant play occurred prior to that to disturb that many traps. Suggest Talega hire a young person to circle the course during the day and rake unattended traps (also, since Talega is a public course, recommend staff advise all players when they pay for their rounds to please rake the traps after use). In addition, the signage to Hole #10 is terrible - one of the staff misdirected us at the turn and we ended up at the driving range; then we followed a long path (perhaps 1/3 mile) to the #10 tee, stopping along the way to question if we were on the right path.
In summary, the course has a lot of potential, but I question if the current management has the vision to maximize it.
Fun day on the course
Greens were in great condition, fairways were ok, tee boxes a little ragged.
Pace was crisp on the front (2:00), bogged down on the back (2:30). 2 or 3 holes we arrived at teebox and group ahead was still waiting to tee off.
i was one of 3 singles put together and it was helpful to have one person who knew the course are there are a number of holes where the lines are unclear. Particularly if playing from the tips as the other 1st timer was.
Overall fun day
Terrible Conditions and Staff
Conditions were horrendous , especially for $180 a tee time. I’ve been to municipal courses for a fraction of the price. Dead grass literally surrounding the cups, 3/4 of the greens were dead, it was horrendous. Pro shop guy was extremely rude acting like this is some prestigious course. Never again. Went with my brothers and we will never recommend this course to anyone, we’ve been telling everyone the exact opposite. Terrible terrible course and staff.
Rough Conditions
Overpriced for the type of golf course you get : tee boxes are mostly sand , grass in rough shape, wouldn’t play here again.
Amazing
I found this place so fun
Easy to get an early tee time
Great design by Freddie Couples
Friendliest Staff around!
Have played the course a few times. The gentlemen Jesus checking us in and the starter Charlie are top notch..nicest guys you’ll ever meet. Fun course and I’m definitely returning.
Great course
Love this golf course, layout is great and back 9 is challenging
Pass
Greens were all very bumpy. Fairways starting to turn yellow.
Starter allowed a 5-some in front of us. Said it was two 3-somes. It was not.
Expected better.
Nickel and diming you where they can
This course has a nice layout so that is why I have come back to play it a couple of times. With that said, after yesterday’s experience in the golf shop I do not believe I will ever play here. It was Mother’s Day. Course was relatively empty. I could’ve played Tijeres Creek, Shore Cliffs, San Clemente Municipal or Strawberry Farms and decided here because it has been awhile.
I was originally set up to play with 4 people. In the golf shop I told the person checking me in that I have my mom riding with me. I could’ve see he was trying to figure how to charge. Which after playing over a 100 courses I assume that would mean worse case scenario cart fee(which I’m sure we all agree is ridiculous but accept it). But he proceeds to tell me that he is going to be doing me a favor because it’s Mother’s Day and won’t charge me a 3rd cart fee. Meaning that because I was suppose to ride with someone I don’t know but has my same tee time. My mom needs to be charged a cart fee, I need to be charged a cart fee, even though a cart fee is already with what I’m paying.
So I sat there in my mind thinking, Even the more top tier course from Torrey pines, sand piper and courses like Trump never said that to me.
So after playing the course and a good 9 tee boxes being short of being a jump rather then anything resembling flat. I said to myself, I won’t complain because they won’t care or get it. But I’ll write a review expressing they are going to loose more then just a stimulus $30 cart fee, but future business from myself and others that take this review into consideration. It’s probably time we hold some of these golf courses accountable.
Slow play, slow greens
Talega is a fine course in general. The layout is a bit funky between the front and back 9's, as the front is par 35 with (3) par 3s.
2 things stood out for me this round: first, the pace of play is too slow. We were waiting on every tee box for what seemed like 5 minutes with a 824a tee time. Never saw a Marshal once to check on where the bottleneck was.
Second were the pace of the greens. I'm assuming they were punched recently but although there wasn't any sand on the greens, they were bumpy and very slow.
Talega.....could be so much better
Talega.....i have played here about 15 times in the last 3 seasons. I do enjoy the course specifically the greens are always in great conditions and the course is very playable. However, the amenities and service are lacking. First, the range being offsite is extremely inconvenient. Second, there hasn't been a cart girl or any beverage service on the course for the last 2 seasons. So the only way to hydrate is at the clubhouse. There are no drinking fountains on the course either. When it is the summer this is absolutely ridiculous. Last, the food/bar, there isn't a bar for one and the only food is like concession food. Overall the course is solid but everything else lacks. DO BETTER.
