From super cars to super clubs?

McLaren Golf is a new player ready to enter the already crowded and competitive world of golf equipment. McLaren is known for building some of the fastest cars on the planet. Now, it’s turning its attention to a different kind of performance — the golf course.

In a move that signals the growing power of the luxury sports market, the British supercar maker is entering the golf equipment space, bringing its engineering pedigree and premium brand cachet to an industry dominated by legacy brands like Titleist, Callaway and TaylorMade.

McLaren Golf - backed by the engineering might of McLaren Racing and McLaren Automotive - will launch its first products April 29. What those products will be has yet to be announced. Currently, its new website is only a placeholder taking e-mails from interested golfers. McLaren Golf's Instagram account already has 18.2 thousand followers.

A short, cryptic press release reveals little about what clubs will be built, how much they will cost or what they might look like. McLaren Golf is purposely teasing golfers - kind of like the feeling of hitting a blind tee shot. We're all left wondering, 'what's next'?

“McLaren Golf is a high-end, engineering-led venture which goes beyond the equipment," said Neil Howie, CEO of McLaren Golf. "We’re building a brand grounded in McLaren’s high-performance DNA, and embedding it in a new sporting arena. We’ve hired some of the best minds in engineering and combined them with leading figures from the golf world to create an innovation-led company that pushes the limits of what golfers can expect from their equipment. We can’t wait to see our ambition come to life on the course this year.”

The Growing Luxury Golf Market

The launch comes at a curious time in the equipment industry when there's growing push-back over technological advances to hit the ball farther. The golf ball rollback led by the United States Golf Association and R&A will move forward in 2030. How can McLaren possibly build golf clubs that are better than anything out there, given the rules restrictions of the governing bodies? And if they do end up performing so much better, won't the USGA and R&A ban whatever game-changing technology McLaren creates to uphold the integrity of the game?

However, there is definitely a blue-print for success for new luxury brands to disrupt the current golf market. L.A.B. Golf - which launched in 2018 - has turned putting on its head, launching the era of the zero-torque putter that every major manufacturer is now coping. L.A.B. Golf is selling $700 magic wands that offer the proper "lie angle balance" for every golfer.

Five years prior in 2013, PXG made a splashy debut touting uber-expensive drivers. PXG has made steady inroads since, opening brick-and-mortal stores around the country and pivoting toward clubs priced more in line with traditional companies like Titleist, TaylorMade, Callaway and others.

McLaren's reputation for racing excellence, performance engineering, expertise in carbon fiber and F1 technology that promotes speed and aerodynamics will certain have some golfers ready to buy immediately.

The press release reads: This launch will extend McLaren’s DNA – built on decades of experience in elite motorsport and supercar engineering – into a new category, led by a dedicated team of golf-industry experts and world-class engineering minds. McLaren Golf will push the boundaries of equipment design and manufacturing to unlock new levels of precision for golfers driven by the same endless pursuit of performance.

“McLaren has always turned technical excellence into extraordinary experiences," Nick Collins, CEO, McLaren Automotive, said. "We’re bringing that same philosophy and applying it to our new venture, McLaren Golf. We’re creating equipment that is beautifully engineered, meticulously refined and unmistakably McLaren.”

McLaren wants to manufacture golf clubs? You'd think they could put their expertise more towards a new line of golf carts. If anyone could build a cart with a carbon tub chassis and engineer a 0-20 mph time that would terrify even the marshal, it would be McLaren.
