During the 2024 PGA Show Demo Day earlier this year, I stopped by the Titleist booth to talk with a knowledgeable Titleist sales rep about the new Titleist Vokey SM10 wedges.

Everybody is looking to shoot lower scores - and the easiest way to do that for amateurs is to get up and down more often - so I put them to the test. Designed to elevate your short game, the Vokey SM10 wedges boast precise innovations in spin technology and a refined shape that may make upgrading a serious consideration.

• Immediately, when I held the SM10 wedge in my hands it felt heavy, but balanced throughout, which is the feel I enjoy, from a wedge.
• Unfortunately, I severely chunked the first two shots of the day (perhaps I could use some short game tips). See the user error in the video above. After several shots, I did notice that the trajectory seemed to come out lower than my current wedges (SM6). The reason why that was happening is because the center of gravity is higher on the club face (at least with the higher lofted wedges, 54 degrees to 62 degrees), which means you will hit the ball lower on the club face in relation to the center of gravity, resulting in a lower trajectory.
• They do a wonderful job hiding the weight behind the club face. It doesn't look too thick when you look down at it.

As I mentioned above, one of the standout features of the SM10 wedges is the refined center of gravity progression. What does this mean for golfers? In simple terms, it enhances overall wedge performance, contributing to a more desired flight and increased accuracy on approach shots. The lower lofts have a lowered center of gravity to help with full shots from the fairway, while the higher lofts have a raised center of gravity, improving performance on shorter shots and around the green.

Another feature that sets these wedges apart is the refined spin milling process. Designed to maximize spin and durability, the spin milling process plays a significant role in the SM10’s exceptional performance. Pair this with a ProV1 or ProV1x golf ball and you're in business for great spin.

This meticulous attention to detail in the spin milling process results in maximum spin production from the Vokey SM10 wedges. The process features tighter tolerances, micro textures, and spin milled grooves with varied groove geometry based on loft and finish, all contributing to the wedges’ high spin performance.

The SM10 wedges showcase straighter leading edges in lower lofted wedges and curved leading edges in higher lofted wedges, enhancing their functionality and aesthetic appeal. The straighter leading edges of the pitching and gap wedge make them more forgiving on square-face shots. On the other hand, the sand wedge and lob wedges have been designed with more curved leading edges in the SM10 series, promoting smoother turf interaction on open-faced shots.

Not just performance, but aesthetics too have been given due consideration in the SM10 wedges. Titleist Vokey SM10 Wedges

A significant aspect that sets Vokey wedges apart is the impressive array of grind options. Vokey wedges have 25 distinct loft, bounce, and grind combinations available in the SM10 lineup. Obviously, there are probably too many options here for the weekend golfer to choose from, but my suggestion is to go get fitted for wedges and have a professional tell you what will be the best wedges for your game.

The six available wedge grinds include:

• D grind: Known for high bounce and forgiveness, this is great for playing with a variety of club face positions.
• F grind: An all-purpose grind is ideal for full swing shots.
• M grind: It's for shallow attack angles and firm or sandy conditions.
• K grind: Also known for high bounce and forgiveness, this is great for soft conditions.
• S grind: Ideal for attack angles that range from neutral to steep with a square face.
• T grind: It offers a versatile, low-bounce option for advanced shot-making.

The SM10 wedge comes in four different finish options:

1. Tour Chrome - The classic look.
2. Jet Black - This bold appearance will most likely wear quicker and you will see the silver color underneath.
3. Nickel - This all-new look offers a grey finish.
4. Raw - This wedge is designed with no finish so that it will provide the rusted look.

Unfortunately, when I was testing out the SM10 wedge at the PGA Show Demo day, my hitting bay did not have a launch monitor. So, I wasn't able to get really nerdy with the spin numbers. However, The SM10 wedges maintain Vokey’s legacy of producing wedges with significant spin.

The SM10 wedges have their patented spin milled process that is supposed to give you the maximum amount of spin. In between each groove, there are micro-grooves to promote even more spin. I'll have to wait until my next wedge fitting to attest to this.

For golfers who value personalization, the SM10 wedges offer extensive customization options through Vokey’s WedgeWorks program and HandGround services. These services provide a variety of customization options including:

Again, I can't recommend getting fit for wedges enough. I'd highly recommend getting fit before buying any club, not just wedges.

The groove life on the SM10s are claimed they will last longer because heat treatment is applied, so buying used could be beneficial to save some money.

These new wedges feel like an improvement from past models. These wedges offer elite spin, controlled launch and an extensive selection of sole options. The enhancements in the center of gravity are impressive to me because in order to move the center of gravity higher you need to add more mass higher. The Vokey wedges don't look clunky because the center of gravity is higher on the club face, which can often happen.

I have had Vokey wedges in my bag for a very long time, hence the SM6's that I am currently playing, so I am long overdue for some new wedges. These will be on the top of list when I decide to pull the trigger.
