Ballyowen Golf Club
About
Ballyowen Golf Club is an homage to the great Scottish links courses, the place where golf originated. The course sprawls across 250 acres of rolling farmland that overlooks the Walkill River. The layout tumbles through valleys and hills, staying as true as possible to the natural contours of the land. Much like a traditional links golf course, the virtually treeless landscape is accented with craggy knolls. The challenging layout features lush green fairways that contrast beautifully with the pristine white sand bunkers and golden patches of rough that border the greensides. There are also water hazards that come into play on five holes. Ballyowen has earned the title of New Jersey's top public course and Golfweek has even ranked it as one of the top 50 courses in the country.

Good test of golf
Nice, challenging course. Accuracy off the tee is necessary as wayward shots get swallowed up by the native grasses and fescue. Greens are large, break more than they look and are protected by large, deep bunkers. Unfortunately many players don't have enough etiquette to repair their ball marks, leaving some of the greens pock marked. Staff was cordial and clubhouse facilities very nice. Will play again but probably only at Golf Now discounted rate.
very challenging but excellent status
It was a nice experience to play at the ballyowen ^^
Great Course !
Truely enjoyed playing Ballyowen! Course conditions were great !. Staff very well mannered and very attentive .
Will come back again!
Best Public Course out there
This is probably one of the nicest public courses out there in the tri-state (NJ,NY,PA) that you'll find, its a little pricey but with GolfNow- it makes it very affordable.
great layout
Challenging with some manageable holes mixed in. True target golf. Can't just swing away with the driver. If you play the tee shot to specific areas, then must easier to score. Greens have good undulation but roll fast and true (and we played right after some rain). A great golf experience if in the area!!!
nice course with flaws
Basic links style but with a moderate amount of water (most par-3s are over water), very hilly course, with a number of elevated greens. Bunkers need serious work - very rocky and hard. They have replaced some of them with real sand but most are in poor shape. Normal price is between 110-130 and course really isn't worth this much. other courses in NJ are more linksy and cheaper. Superb clubhouse, staff reasonably friendly. Does allow walking, though.
Tough greens.
Resort golf. Great layout, one of the best public links style courses I've played. However the greens are full of ball marks and spike marks. A bit pricey but fun. Staff is very helpful.
Jersey golf at its best
Pristine conditions, best course around. Only knock this time around was some hardness in the bunkers, a little like hitting off concrete.
Great Links sytle course
This course offers a European feel of links golf that you would find in Ireland or Scotland. I will certainly play it again.
A "MUST PLAY" COURSE!
With the Open Championship coming up in a week, go play this course to get a feel for what they will be facing across the pond. This is an authentic links style course resembling the finest old style courses. Absolutely beautiful! Absolutely pristine! Even the staff wears authentic clothing. The facilities are fabulous. The driving range is included in the greens fees. The clubhouse is spectacular. Now the details: The grass is knee high in the deep rough so you can actually TRY to get out of it like the pros. The greens are very fast and hard to read for the average golfer and 3 putts are not unusual even after a seemingly good chip or approach shot. Plan on a 5 hour round because of this fact alone unless you are a scratch or very low handicap golfer. If you want a 5 star, challenging, authentic "ancient course" experience this course is a must! It is now my "new" favorite course!!!
Poor Design
Great views from some tees, but I thing that the number of blind shots where fescue comes into play, and the similarities in all of the par 3s make this an overrated course, as do all of the forced carries, the hallmark of lazy design. Worth playing once for the conditions and views, but not a great course.
The course is linlks style with high grass. Backround scenery is great.
The course condition was excellent. The course is more of a shot maker's course. Accuracy is a premium. I would recommend this course especially if you can get a good price otherwise the cost is pricey.
Excellent course. Challenging links style in outstanding condition.
This is an Excellent course. Challenging links style in outstanding condition. Greens were fast and in great shape. Every aspect of the course was in great shape. Many off holes were challenging. Fescue was tough. Need to drive relatively straight to score.
CART PATHS
Needs new cart paths the course is in fine shape but when its cart path only new paths are a must.
For 110 a round.......
The course is excellent. Very well maintained. The greens are amazing and roll true. The pace of play - well, it was very slow. There is no reason why a round of golf should take more than 4.5 hours. My biggest complaint. The golf carts - it was raining a little bit which was not much of a bother. However, the carts didn't even have cover for your clubs. No GPS on the carts. For 110 a round (though we got a better rate on golfnow) should be expected. Oh, no water jugs on the course. Overall, the course is excellent and well maintained Fun to play and challenging. The other amenities as noted above would have made the experience a whole lot better.
play here if you can
great layout ...greens are in great shape . i played the gold tees and its plenty from there...some risk reward holes ..par 5's reachable from the gold for me so it was a lot of fun . take some extra time to be on the green in the right places . lots of tough undulations ...great course
friendly for all types of players
Followed the last group in an outing. they played extremely slow. Had to call the front desk to come out and move them along. After they finished the 6th hole, we moved along quite rapidly.
Great Links Course in the Mountains
Fantastic resort course in the scenic mountains. Always a great time to play there. Third hole Par 5 is awesome! Golf now had a great deal and got a round for $89.00 at 1:20pm in early June. Price is usually $140.00! What a deal. Will definitely go back soon.
Links Course Experience
Need to be accurate not only off the tee but on your second shots too. Easy to make a double playing from the fescue. Take it easy going for the green in two on the par 5's
I played the course again last week (9/26/2014). This time I had major issues with the course. I have at times serious difficulties walking, especially hills and use a mobility scooter a lot.
I expressed some concerns to the starter about the rules on where we could go even with a handicap flag and he stated that they'd work with me so that I would not have any issues. Turns out that was an absolute fabrication just to get my money.
4 holes were totally unplayable due to difficulty walking and a number of others were extremely difficult to get to at all.
Was yelled at by Ranger due to driving in to play. Told had to stay on Cart path.
So if you are handicapped at all, don't play. Its not friendly towards the handicapped at all and they will give you grief. And you can't play all the holes so you're paying for holes you can't play. And that's not good.
