Ballyowen Golf Club
About
Ballyowen Golf Club is an homage to the great Scottish links courses, the place where golf originated. The course sprawls across 250 acres of rolling farmland that overlooks the Walkill River. The layout tumbles through valleys and hills, staying as true as possible to the natural contours of the land. Much like a traditional links golf course, the virtually treeless landscape is accented with craggy knolls. The challenging layout features lush green fairways that contrast beautifully with the pristine white sand bunkers and golden patches of rough that border the greensides. There are also water hazards that come into play on five holes. Ballyowen has earned the title of New Jersey's top public course and Golfweek has even ranked it as one of the top 50 courses in the country.

Nice course, lousy value
Ballyowen is definitely a nice course with interesting holes, scenic vistas, and a multitude of ways to test your game. Unfortunately it is also in a fairly remote location and is quite expensive compared to other high end courses in the metropolitan area. It was also looking a little beat up when I was there in early September 2013 but believe conditions are normally very good. If you are willing to travel roughly an hour from the NYC area you can play Bethpage Black for basically the same price or Neshanik Valley for half the price.
The course was great!!
The staff is friendly and helpful. The course is in excellent shape. It's open with a moderate amount bunkers and water. The fairways are laid out in front of you with challenging approaches to the green. The landscape around the course is beautiful and the cart girl comes around just about every whole. When you go into the restaurant and locker rooms it feels like you are in a private country club. If you love the game you'll love this course!
very nice course. Views are great nice layout.
I wished we had been told they just airated the week we played. It was healing up but not worth the 100 dollars we were charged. The local courses are all airating now so I guess I should have figured we would have that problem there too.
Much more difficult than it looks
Greens were aerated and made play difficult otherwise fairways and tee boxes were in great shape. If you can't hit it straight and in the fairway, not the course for you.
Greens were aerated
A premier course that charges top dollar should post their aeration schedule or offer reduced greens fees. GOLFNOW should post maintenance schedules
usually a great course
was not informed about the aerated greens and fairways before booking the tee time. i see now they have updated it.
nice view challenging course
for the price I paid to play I was not satisfied. We had ad 8.30 tee time and they didn't get us out till 9.00 Also they were thatching a few holes and they were a mess. The greens were airrated on Monday and we played Wednesday way too much sand putting was horrible. Overall I was not happy.
Great Course but they could have mentioned they were aerating the greens
Although this is a great course and great surroundings. We had to listen to maintenance people with loud equipment throughout the game, the greens had sand all over them from aeration (very difficult to putt with these conditions), and with the aeration on the fairways there was a lot of dirt all over the fairways. Obviously not the right time to play on the course.
Awesome course
Beautiful course a little expensive tho .very ejoyable round of golf
beautiful scenery
the coarse is great for everyone. Scenery was nice and well maintained.
Good test of golf
Nice, challenging course. Accuracy off the tee is necessary as wayward shots get swallowed up by the native grasses and fescue. Greens are large, break more than they look and are protected by large, deep bunkers. Unfortunately many players don't have enough etiquette to repair their ball marks, leaving some of the greens pock marked. Staff was cordial and clubhouse facilities very nice. Will play again but probably only at Golf Now discounted rate.
very challenging but excellent status
It was a nice experience to play at the ballyowen ^^
Great Course !
Truely enjoyed playing Ballyowen! Course conditions were great !. Staff very well mannered and very attentive .
Will come back again!
Best Public Course out there
This is probably one of the nicest public courses out there in the tri-state (NJ,NY,PA) that you'll find, its a little pricey but with GolfNow- it makes it very affordable.
great layout
Challenging with some manageable holes mixed in. True target golf. Can't just swing away with the driver. If you play the tee shot to specific areas, then must easier to score. Greens have good undulation but roll fast and true (and we played right after some rain). A great golf experience if in the area!!!
nice course with flaws
Basic links style but with a moderate amount of water (most par-3s are over water), very hilly course, with a number of elevated greens. Bunkers need serious work - very rocky and hard. They have replaced some of them with real sand but most are in poor shape. Normal price is between 110-130 and course really isn't worth this much. other courses in NJ are more linksy and cheaper. Superb clubhouse, staff reasonably friendly. Does allow walking, though.
Tough greens.
Resort golf. Great layout, one of the best public links style courses I've played. However the greens are full of ball marks and spike marks. A bit pricey but fun. Staff is very helpful.
Jersey golf at its best
Pristine conditions, best course around. Only knock this time around was some hardness in the bunkers, a little like hitting off concrete.
Great Links sytle course
This course offers a European feel of links golf that you would find in Ireland or Scotland. I will certainly play it again.
I played the course again last week (9/26/2014). This time I had major issues with the course. I have at times serious difficulties walking, especially hills and use a mobility scooter a lot.
I expressed some concerns to the starter about the rules on where we could go even with a handicap flag and he stated that they'd work with me so that I would not have any issues. Turns out that was an absolute fabrication just to get my money.
4 holes were totally unplayable due to difficulty walking and a number of others were extremely difficult to get to at all.
Was yelled at by Ranger due to driving in to play. Told had to stay on Cart path.
So if you are handicapped at all, don't play. Its not friendly towards the handicapped at all and they will give you grief. And you can't play all the holes so you're paying for holes you can't play. And that's not good.
