Good corse
Good course, nice condition
Disappointing Revisit
This is my favorite layout on Staten Island. I haven't played here in a couple of years so I decided to give it a go today. Weather was 89* and sunny.
Front desk folks are very good, professional and friendly. Best part of the round.
1st Tee: Course was full with a steady of players. I was a single and manager to get in line with two other gents. A fourth showed up and we played together with three carts. Very disorganized first tee. Every group had three or more carts. Inefficient use of resources and assets.
Pace of play: A lot of what I would call "Choppers" out in the beautiful weather. A lot of Seniors playing also. Those groups hate losing balls so they search every nook and cranny looking for that $1.50 Top Flite causing a long wait between shots. Round from 1st tee check in to finish was 5 hours, 20 minutes.
Course condition: Tees were not mowed and turf was sparse. Looking around, there are few greens that get sufficient light to support proper turf growth. Lots of crab grass, sand and bare spots on the tees. Fairways had lots of turf of various sorts but were in need of mowing. Rough was plush and someone was mowing. Greens were in fact green. Very slow and again not much speed. Don't suspect the mower heights were set for medium to fast greens.
Final thoughts: New carts were a big plus. Again, today was hot and humid and there was not a drop of water anywhere on the course. You bought bottled beverages at the first tee before you teed off or when you made the turn. Nobody in their right mind would venture to drink from the two sketchy moldy and unclean fountains if you could remember where they were.
This is a city owned, privately operated concession. While I love the layout, it is geared for the recreational golfer and senior citizen. If you want to play real golf and enjoy your efforts, look elsewhere.
Pretty good for a public course
First time on the course, pretty decent. Not a hard or long course, but still has it's challenges. It was in great shape, especially the greens considering the weather and drought conditions lately. We played on a very hot day and the bartender in the snack bar told us that it was much less crowded than normal. I would definitely play here again, but it might not be worth it on a crowded day if it was going to be a 5-6 hour round.
Amazing round
we are 4 some , great round . one of us hit on the green at 4th hole 265 yards, and he got a birdie .
And I almost got a hole in one at hole 6th hole ,par 3 with 121 yards, 6 inches to the hole.
Good condition slow play
The course was in real good shape considering we have not had rain ...the group in front of us not in good shape. Very very slow pace hitting 2 to 3 balls off every tee just plain ridiculous
Starter is a mess
The course was in great shape, there are some really dramatic layouts here for an NYC public course, and some of the greens are fantastic. You feel more secluded here than at other NYC courses like Dyker Beach or La Tourette. However, there was a 4 group pile-up on the first tee, the group ahead of us obnoxiously went off as a 2-some (instead of sticking with the 2 they were paired with) and we tee'd off about 30 min AFTER our scheduled time. The pace wasn't terrible after the first few holes, but they really need to get their starter situation fixed.
Always a good time
Course was well maintained as usual
We were unfortunate to have 2 slow 4somes ahead of us
And packed for a Wednesday afternoon
South Shore the Hidden Gem
As someone who has played a lot of golf on Staten Island, courses can get crowded and you end up waiting in the cart longer than playing. This weekend I teed off at 9:30, played in a twosome and finished within 4 hours (ended up having to wait a bit on the threesome in front of us). The course was in excellent condition and the staff is always happy and helpful. They also have a good place to grab food/drinks/beers at reasonable prices and can call ahead so it is ready for you at the turn.
Nice course
I really enjoyed the course. My playing partners were awesome guys. A lot of fun holes.
Needs better maintenance
Despite being early spring greens need work. Debris in bunkers (unforgiveable) like tree limbs. Cart paths need much repair. Carts need replacing.
Quick round
Arrived at 12:00pm for a 12:23pm. Was told I had to wait for 12:07pm reservation to check in first. ?? And I could not get a cart either yet ??
Course is fine. And pace of play excellent, no waiting at tees. Finished in under 4hrs.
October Course Rating
The Course is in great condition! Right now its the best course on SI.
Poor value for your money
For a course that charges top dollar (70$) a round, the pace of play is terrible, they have no food or drink cart girl driving around the course, and the course is not kept in great condition. I live on the island and play here several times a season and the course consistently averages 5 hours or more for pace of play. There is no ice water on the course. They installed three or four water fountains around the course that run warm water. There is never any course workers driving around the course to move slow players along and they basically allow anyone dressed any way to play. They never I force any type of dress code. Guys are playing in sneakers and basketball shorts. It's a total joke and I'm done with this place. For 70$ bucks you can go play some beautiful well kept and run courses in jersey.
Good day
The course has a good layout. The greens were in excellent condition and fast.We teed off at 11:30 and were done by 3:30.My only complaints were that the tee boxes were in bad shape and that there were no beverage carts out.
South Shore
This course which is in close proximity to where I live was recommended by a so called friend who I think was playing a joke because there is really nothing nice to say about it. First off, our tee time was at 9:00 am we teed off at 9:37 am. The greens were ridiculously slow and although the fairways were acceptable, the tee boxes were below average. It took 2 hours and 51 minutes to play the front nine. Our group got to the fourteenth hole and our cart died so we hopped on the other cart and left the establishment which was 3:20 pm. For the price you pay, you would expect the golf carts to work, the pace of play to at least be governed and why would anyone want to play 6 hours and only be on hole 14? I would not recommend this course unless you have all the time in the world.
Go to jersey
Course is way too expensive for the type of service they provide. You'll never see a Marshall pushing the pace of play. The starters don't care about anything and have no problem having a loud conversation while you're trying to tee off. Groups will skip ahead of you without notice. The fairways and greens are in pretty good shape but the rough and tee boxes need some work. The golf karts take a good 5 second le until they start to move and the upholstery is ripping on all of them.
Go play somewhere nicer and cheaper in jersey.
Evening golf
A very nice round with friends after work. Some wind conditions made some of the holes a bit challeging. Even with two individual twosomes in front the round went by at a good pace. Course was in good condition , greens in good shape.
Mcd56
They should not send out 2. Somes. Period amen. That slowed down the pace for the day. Other then that. Is was a superb day. Great shape the course was in , and weather matched it.
Good round
Had avery enjoyable morning. Tee time was 722 and i got paired up with 3 other singles. Tee off was on time and completed the round in 4 hours. The cAfe on site is priced very well and food and beverage is quite good.
As we all know the carts here are some of the worst on the east coast. Made it through the round incident free.
Slowest round of my life
There were no carts available when we arrived. It was over an hour after our tee time before carts came in. We waited another 25 minutes to tee off once we got carts. Then we spent the next 5.5 hours playing the 18 holes. 4 people in the starter booth, 0 rangers on the course regulating the rate of play.
Course was pretty well maintained, but that's about it for the positive side. I won't be coming back.
