Ambassador at Hickory Valley Golf Club

About
Hickory Valley Golf Club boasts two 18-hole, regulation-length courses, named the Ambassador and the Presidential. The Ambassador Course is the shorter of the two at 6,450 yards but it still offers a fair test. The classic layout is routed through towering hardwoods forests that stretch to over 70 feet high. The tall hickory trees loom over the fairways. The small greens are sloped back to front, presenting a challenge for even the most seasoned players. Water hazards come into play on several holes and there are a few tricky doglegs to contend with. The bunkering is minimal but the abundant trees will be enough to keep you on your toes. The golf course has some challenging holes but it's not overly punishing for the high handicapper.

Great course with some stipulations
Great course, great layout, have played it multiple times. If you play the Presidential course, be aware that you don’t go back to the club house until the end of the round. They have a halfway house after 10 but it’s never open to get snacks or drinks. I’ve never seen it open, even after playing the course 5 times, so if you’re prepared for that, it’s a great course, and is kept in good condition. Clubhouse snacks and drinks are solid. Driving range is irons only, no woods.
Tight Course with nice creek running throughout
Make sure to bring your ball retriever as the creek running through the course is clear so you can easily see your ball to retrieve.
Mature trees tighten this course more than it appears on first look. Greens are usually in good shape, but today they were aerated.
Very Disappointed
I’ve played Hickory Valley Presidential course dozens of times in th past and I enjoy the layout. Old School, tree lined course not tricked up at all. This last experience was disappointing. It started with a long check in process that took about 10 minutes with only one golfer in front of me at one cash register and another buying balls at the other. There were three staff members and it was as if it was of their first day. When I finally did check in, I was given a $10 voucher for my next round. Cool, I thought. Maybe for the long wait? No explanation. It turns out they explained it to my son who checked in after me with another staff member that this was because the greens were aerated. He also gave him
$10 off his round for the day. None of the other three in the group received this discount. There was no mention of aeration on GN. As for the course, in addition to the aeration, the bunkers were in terrible shape. The golf season is open. There should be sand in the bunkers and they should be raked. Neither was the case and most bunkers were unplayable due to ponds in many of them. Fairways, Tees and Rough were extremely uneven. Clumps of grass and weeds in places and bare spots in others. This course has had ups and downs over the years, but this is as low as I’ve seen it. There were ample tee times on a Saturday and I can see why. I don’t plan on going back anytime soon.
Nice course. Early season conditions weren't the best
Nice course, was pretty fun to play. Not too excited on the conditions after paying almost $80. Aerated greens and bunkers were meh.
Terrible weather for the round
This is normally a great course to play but the weather made it a really crappy round. The day was cold and very windy and unfortunately as a result of all the rain previously the course was extremely wet. and swampy. We should have cancelled our round.
Pro Shop person is bad
I booked via GolfNow to play at 1:00pm, but the pro shop does not want to honor it and proposed me to play at 1:40pm. He said booking via GolfNow means nothing to him. Why does golf now still have this course on the app?
Pro shop attitude
The guy behind the counter clearly doesn’t appreciate anyone who books through an online discount site. He said “so you’re one of those Teetime guys”. And made it a point to tell me that there was a Teetime guy who played 4 holes the other day and wanted a rain check. He then said, “the guy didn’t pay anything?”
I reminded him that money definitely came out of my account…
No Marshall
I have been playing here over 30+ yrs. It was on my favorites list.. the last couple yrs the place has gone down hill.. the parking lot looks like someone carpet bombed it. At least fill the holes in. For 72$ at the end of March at least have marshalls on the course.
Every single shot we had to wait. Terrible golfers and no care in the world about the pace of play or knowledge about game of golf. Driving carts around the traps and greens. No marshalls at all.. better courses in the area. Won't be playing here anytime soon again. And this has been ongoing for awhile now.
Great day. I walked both courses in the same day. They both were layed out relatively the same. Both had water running through them which created lay up situations. The courses were both in good shape. Staff was friendly and knowledgeable. Both courses were pretty open so if you kept the ball in front of you you can't get in that much trouble. Still a great piece of property. I'd recommend it. Go walk it!
losing its focus
There is a trend this course is losing its focus.
The greens are in a good enough condition but still could use some improvements in terms of speed and divot marks.
the fairways can also use some mowing too. Most of tee boxes are very patchy.
The worst part that needs help are bunkers.
The erosion is out of control and sand is half mud and sand.
The entire course had trashcans full and were spilling over with cans near the trashcans.
what a mess!
i heard there was a new owner or something to that nature. i saw the "owner" coming to the 1st tee box screaming out the players name for trying to tee off when there was nobody even waiting at the first tee. Perhaps he should concern himself with the much needed improvements the course desperately needs instead of trying to police someone just trying to get out when there was NOBODY on the first tee.
It used to be a great course with friendly and accepting people. Now,,,, go see for yourself. sigh!
Last time we will ever play here
Carts were filthy dirty
Course was not in good shape
Tee boxes look like they haven’t been moved in at least a week. No Ranger to speed up play!
We got food and drinks after the round (over $45) and they came over to the table and asked for $1.25 because they didn’t change enough. And that was after a tip of over $10
That just put it over the top
