Sawmill Creek Golf & Racquet Club
About
Sawmill Creek Golf Resort & Spa sits along the banks of Lake Huron with Sarnia to the East and London just 45 minutes west. The course has a links-style layout that stretches to 6,782 yards from the back tees. Designed by Rene Muylaert, the creation of the golf course required over a million tons of earth to be moved to the site. It was then molded and shaped into rolling terrain that offers a tough but fair test. The namesake creek comes into play on 13 holes and there are also several strategically placed bunkers that lurk beside the greens. There are some tricky holes but it's not overly punishing to the high handicapper. In addition to the golf course, Sawmill Creek also has a driving range available for warming up.

Great course...challenging but fair.
First time on the course this weekend...about a 30 minute drive from Avon. Terrific lay-out and extremely well-maintained. I also like that it was an easy course to walk. Lots of variety...I hit every club in my bag. I'll be back.
Best Value!
Had a great time on a Saturday in September. We squeezed between two scrambles but play moved swiftly.
Fair golf course, everything is right in front of you. challanging par 3's and greens. love playing this course!
This golf course has great par 3's, from the white tees play from 130 yards up to 175 yards. Greens are large and quick and course is located near lake erie, so the wind often factors into your shots.
Nice resort style course
Sawmill Creek is a nice course, however, having played there for the first time, I would never play full price. It is a nice course, but leaves much to be desired. The front 9 is very enjoyable as are the first 2 holes on the back 9...and then everything changes. Tom Fazio did a poor job of routing the entire golf course, and with so much land, I can't believe there is not a driving range. It's a shame that so many great holes (#6, #7, #13) are mixed in with so many lackluster holes (#1, #14, #16), including the 18th. Although a Hot Deal gives you a substantial savings over full price, the course is not really worth much more. It is rough around the edges, cartpaths need updating and fairways have seen their better day I'm sure! Overall not a bad course, but a little let down for what I was expecting.
PGA Greens
This course will truly test the scoring wand. Getting to the green on most holes is not all that difficult; well, if you're able to stay out of the many giant strategically placed bunkers, and out from behind the little trees. Pin placements make this course hard. Giant greens could be a 2 club difference coming into the flag. Once you get on the greens your speed and lines are constantly being tested. Awesome course for the money, and truly will test your skills. Wind off the lake could also make it interesting...thankfully it was calm on Monday.
Not a true "Resort" course
Played on 9/3 and course was in ok shape. Fairways were in need of a mower but not horrible. I would consider this course a good value for around $30 but definately not any more than that.
Nice Tom Fazio designed course with true rolling medium to fast paced greens
Sawmill is one of the better public courses West of Cleveland in my opinion. Tee time was 7:10am and we were off the first tee by 7:12 with four golfters. Conditions were a bit wet so the greens were not as fast as i've seen, but got faster as they dried. The course is in very nice shape, and can be demanding off the tee and on some approach shots where greens are guarded by bunkers. Blue tees make all the par 3's much more challenging and add to a few of the tee shots as well. Greens and bunkers were well manicured. Some fairways had a lot of bald spots that were like hitting out of a divot if you landed there. We decided to move hte ball to grass rather than being penalized for shots in the middle of the fairway. Pace of play was very good, we were never held up and finished in 4hrs and 10 mins. Ranger was on the group behind us the entire round and told us to speed up even though we were 1 1/2 holes ahead of the group behind. That is my only complaint, I felt a bit rushed as the ranger followed our entire back 9 holes when it was the group behind us that could not keep up the pace. The group ahead of us was 2 holes ahead but they were all very good players and two were walking with their own pull carts and the other two in a riding cart. I would return to play at the rate of $45/18 with a cart, but do not think it's worth much more. 4.5/5 stars.
Nice layout but pricy
Played here before and the course was in great condition again. Unless you are a big hitter, a couple of the par fours are hard to hit in two. It seems that the wind always blows in to you when your playing the long par fours. The layout is good and there are birdie opportunities out there. The greens are fast and true. The normal price is high, so we only play ther when we can get discount pricing. At 64 years old I probably shouldn't play the white tees on all of the holes. Nice course.
Course was good but definitely not worth what they charge.
The course layout was great with interesting holes. The conditions of the fairway were terrible, and some of the info on the website was inaccurate. Greens and tees were nice.
Great par 3's
Very nice course, always fun and in good shape, fairways had some bare spots but overall in pretty good shape!
Always tuff to putt, but that makes it fun!
The fairways had some damage due to all the rain we have been receiving this year; this is true for all the courses in the area. Still a great place to play!
The course was beat up
I got a good price for the golf course but I'm never driving out there again. It's not worth the drive. The course is not what it once was 3 years ago.
Fairways need attention
This would be an excellent course to play, except the fairways.
Many of the fairways were damaged and burnt out.
I am not sure why this course is $70 to play, but I guess it must get a lot of resort guests who don't mind paying premium prices.
Interesting course
The fairways were a bit sparse - had a number of bare spots. The greens were very good though. The staff was very nice - after our round they let us take a cart out on the course to find a club my playing partner had left on the course. It was a good value ($28 on Golfnow) for 18/cart. Full price was over $58. I wouldn't play it at full fee. It would be a great layout if the fairways were more consistent. I would recommend it only as a casual warmup - given the current fairway conditions.
Course drained well
Played morning after heavy rains (approx 2-3" the day before) and the course drained better than expected. Sure there was still some standing water but it was much drier than anticipated.
Nice challenge at reasonable price
GN price was excellent. Many long par fours. Tough par 3s. Well worth it.
This course has great views of Lake Erie.
Sawmill is a great course. We have had a lot rain lately, but course was really in great shape. The wind always blows off the lake. The greens were perfect. The par 3's are a great collection of challenges all with water and varying lengths. Par 4's are long and short, straight and doglegs. Par 5's are reachable with great drives, well maybe not 12 which is a very intimidating. Overall, I would play Sawmill on any given day. Always a true test of golf, but you better putt well on these big undulating greens.
First time playing Sawmill...wont be my last!
I played Sawmill Creek for the first time this past weekend and came away impressed. The course was in great shape in spite of all the rain the area had received. The greens were quick, consistent and fair. You want to be below the hole! Very cool layout. All the bunkers were in pristine shape and had been raked that morning. Was visited by the ranger at least 4 times during the round. And it wasn't a "hurry up" type of visit. He was just monitoring play making sure everything was running smooth. He was a friendly guy who asked my partner and I how everything was going. I got a great deal on Golfnow.com but from what I heard the regular rate is kinda steep. It was about a 1.5 hour drive for me to get to Sawmill but I feel the value I got was well worth the drive. I will be back!!
good course for the money
good value relative to what i am accustomed to in naples, fl. not quite as difficult as i expected, however enjoyable non-the less.
Pete Dye design along shore of Lake Erie in nice condition & huge greens.
I enjoyed a beautiful afternoon, with virtually no wind (which is rare for this course along Lake Erie between Huron & Sandusky). Greens are huge & avoiding 3putts or penalty strokes --especially on the "Hallway Hole" par5 #12 -- is a real test of one's golf. GolfNow's great rates made this day even more enjoyable, but nobody in front or behind pushing made the round very casual & liesurely 4hrs. Par3's are excellent variety, but be sure to choose comfortable tee sets. You can lose a bunch of balls, but I was fortunate to play with what I started, which again can be attibuted to lack of wind.
