Deer Run Championship at Newport News Golf Club

The course was in absolutely pristine condition. The greens were excellent, no poana and they ran very true. The fairways were also excellent as well as the bunkers. We even saw deer during the round. The round was very enjoyable and I highly recommend!

Great course for the money. It gives you a chance to play a low score but, at times challenging.

Man they really have it together over there @ Deer run. The course was in super condition. Ill play there again very soon.

Played on a Tues AM....booked a 10$ off rate with GN....but with the booking fee and tax at the course, most of the 10 bucks went away...Cardinal was nice....we played from the whites....so more target golf, especially on the front....back is longer and a bit nicer....tee boxes were a bit torn up, fairways weren't bad, greens were pretty nice....some pretty holes, and the back got harder as you went along. Par 3's were not spectacular, but were nice. Rough around the edges, but overall fun and nice. Saw tons of wildlife, more than any other course we played. Would play again with a GN discount.

The title says it all. I've been playing the score since I was 17 years old and while I would recommend it,there's also nothing to write home about it. It does have a good mix of left to right, and right to left holes, as well as short holes and long, easy holes and difficult. The greens are typically slow, but they're also relatively true rolling. I prefer a lightning fast, but most players they would appreciate the speed of these greens. I will say, the fairways were much better than they normally are. They were actually very well conditioned during this round.

Deer Run is a excellent course. Greens and fairways are some of the best in the area. The course is challenging but not overly difficult. I now know why it is called Deer Run, as there are deer all over the place. Recommend playing here if opportunity permits.

This course is in great shape. I have played this course twice now and both times it has been fun. This course is a challenge for anyone that plays golf. The great thing about this course is it forces you to hit fairways. If you do miss the fairways and hit into the woods you might as well as say good bye to your ball.

Very inexpensive, we try to play wherever we visit and this is always a good beginning

This was our first experience playing a Muny course. The club house is first class, the employees were friendly and helpful, the course layout and scenery are outstanding. The course conditions, other than the greens which were somewhat below average, are very poor. I am used to playing on courses that are well groomed, with level tee boxes and fairways with plenty of grass. The course would be a treat to play if conditions were improved, there is so much potential. Hopefully the 'powers that be" might see the wisdom of putting time,money and effort into improving the playing conditions.

Other than being pushed a little from the group behind, could not have been much better. We played 18 in 4 hours hard to understand the push from behind. Course was in great shape.

Gave this an overall "average" rating since course conditions weren't ideal. Greens were in very good shape but lots of bare spots off the fairway...some run off on a few holes - esp #8 where the approach to the green was in pretty bad shape. A few tee boxes could stand more grass as well. Some holes border I-64 and Ft Eustis Blvd so it's not a total "back to nature" expeience. Staff was very friendly and helpful and couldn't beat the rate. After the round, found the grille service to be a bit undermanned and disorganized but food and drink OK. All in all enjoyed playing the course.

Course is very good but is a little long for the average golfer. Conditions and staff were great.

A good course to play. Good greens with fairly wide fairways. Friendly staff. A good walking course that offers good scenery. Well worth the money

This course has some short par 4's on the front 9 but the back 9 is longer and they are repaving the cart paths witch were in need of it!

We had a nice, cool day in the high 50's. The course was waterlogged from a recent day long rain, so it was cart path only. Unlike courses in Virginia Beach, this one had hills on it which made it challenging. Lot's of deer, birds and ducks.

Hard to put my finger on why but I really liked this course. Well maintained. Wide off tees in May areas, hard in others. It just felt good. Longish too. Actually liked better than fords colony at 1/2 the price. Nice.
