Course Highlights
South Riding's varied and challenging layout stands out in Northern Virginia, with notably strong greens that consistently impress compared to nearby courses. Friendly staff and a smooth pace of play make for a well-run round on a course that remains a hidden gem in the region.

South Riding Golf Club is nestled in the gentle hills of northern Virginia, enjoying a landscape of hardwood forests and grassy meadows. The course offers a variety of challenges but the fairways are wide and player-friendly and the greens can be tough in spots but overall they offer some room for error. The layout requires both strategy and skill, it is definitely not a golf course where you will be able to just "grip and rip it." The course pinpoints your weaknesses but it is still a fair test. South Riding Golf Club's eighth hole is memorable for its difficulty but it's an interesting hole sine there are many ways to play it. At 351 yards, the hole is a short but intimidating dogleg left that will tempt you to go over the trees. The fairway is generous but the saddle-shaped green is flanked with bunkers.

First Time Playing

First time playing this course. When our foursome arrived, only then did they tell us that 2 out of the foursome had to walk the course. No reduction in rate for the 2 walkers. I’m 68 and not about to walk a full round. If we had known this, we would not have played here. No communication ahead of time - there’s no excuse for not informing us and disappointing that we paid for 4 people to ride.

Thansk South Riding

The place was in great shape and it was much appreciated that they're open during the virus shutdown. The wind played havoc on my score but that's another story altogether.

Not worth it

Overpriced for what you’re getting and conditions were quite poor considering the fee of $85. Fairways and rough were extremely patchy and inconsistent. Greens, I’ve never seen anything like it- any sort of approach shot will bounce as if you were hitting into a patch of cement. BUT when putting, they’re only at about a 10 on the stimp. Beyond that I’d get a little nit picky... layout was boring and in some cases (17) just silly. Range mats needed replacement about a year ago. Staff was great, so not all bad, and they had a nice welcoming fire pit going outside the clubhouse which was unique. All in all, even if you’re in the area, skip this one.

Pace of play

The two of us were paired up with two other men.One guy walked pulling his cart. Pro shop should tell players that is is not a walking course. He held us up too much that we were continually two holes back which held up every group following us. Me and my friend was also constantly waiting for him to hit as well.

You understand we're in a pandemic, don't you? You probably shouldn't be sharing carts anyway, so if they are walking to minimize risks maybe just be thankful you're getting to play golf at all right now...

Carts only. Not worth it.

Average course - no marshals to speed up the slow groups that like to play hear. Took us 6 hours to play. You’re forced to use their carts - no option to walk.

Winter Conditions

60* on Feb 4 led me to South Riding since my course was closed. The course is player friendly, generous fairways and nice greens for a winter round. The tees and fairways are showing winter wear as divots are prominent everywhere, either reflecting inconsiderate players or failure of healing in winter months.

Playing as a single made round seem slow but that was anticipated and Pandora kept me entertained

The cost was really a bargain so overall no complaints. I think most players will score better than their handicap

Refund of Double Booking, Please

I accidentally booked twice my T time at South Riding Golf Club for the morning of Dec. 27 (because it looked like the online reservation didn't take the first time). I only discovered this by looking at my e-mails when I arrived at the course that morning, and I registered for a cancellation of one of the reservations before the round. I believe that you can see from the way that the two reservations were made--each as a single and only minutes apart--that I never intended to reserve for 2 players. I played, as a single, and would like the second reservation fee refunded. I tried to call that afternoon after coming home from the round, but the wait time was ridiculous at "more than 3 hours."
