Bull Run Golf Club
About
Situated in the foothills of Bull Run Mountain, Bull Run Golf Club has a beautiful woodland setting that is conveniently located just minutes from many historic Civil War sites. The course plays through mature forests and across lush, grassy meadows. There are also several ponds that come into play throughout. The expansive layout covers over 450 acres, allowing plenty of room for the native flora and fauna. The risk-reward layout has plenty of challenges for more daring hitters but it also offers wide fairways that are molded to steer the ball towards the center. The landing areas are generous but they are often framed by grassy hollows, bunkers, or mature trees. Bull Run is challenging, but playable, which is why the club is considered one of the best golf courses in the D.C. area.

Course was in excellent shape
Greens rolled true and had no bad spots. Fairways and tee boxes were in great shape. Although it rained during the first holes, the course drained well and had no standing water.
Bull Run
I was in town for work and had the opportunity to play Bull Run Golf Club, and I’m really glad I made the time.
The first thing that stood out was how wide open the course feels. The fairways are generous, which gives you some added forgiveness off the tee—especially helpful if you’re not totally dialed in. That said, it’s not a pushover. If you do miss the fairway, the rough can be pretty punishing, so there’s definitely a premium on keeping it in play.
The property itself is beautiful, with a peaceful, secluded feel that makes it easy to forget you’re just outside the D.C. area. Conditions were solid overall, and the greens rolled well, rewarding good putts.
One thing to note—it’s not cheap. But for the overall experience, course layout, and conditions, it feels like you’re getting a quality round for the price.
What I appreciated most is that Bull Run strikes a nice balance—it’s playable and enjoyable for a wide range of skill levels, but still offers enough challenge to keep better players engaged.
If you’re traveling through the area or looking for a quality public course in Northern Virginia, Bull Run is definitely worth a round.
Surprised
I had played here before and was a little surprised in the course condition. Some of the fairways were ultra soggy so even when you hit a good shot off the tee, your footing was questionable and I felt like I chunked a bunch of my irons because it was so soggy. The other thing was the rough was crazy high and really needed a cut. If you ended up hitting in the rough, it was an adventure to even find your ball.
I’ll play here again but I hope next time the course is in better condition.
Good Day
6 of us got out and enjoyed this course. Conditions were very good. Stay in the fairway as the rough is very thick. Greens rolled true. Staff was friendly and inviting.
Fairways - rough | Greens - furry
Nothing worse than getting 2 yards of rollout on a nice drive down the middle and then being unsure if you’re in the rough or in the fairway… I know they was some rain but the course didn’t look like it had been groomed in weeks - greens were what I would call furry…
rain soaked
Bull Run is one of the better public courses in the NOVA area. Course was soaked from days of rain and understandably, cart path only and grass was not cut to standard due to all the rain. Certainly will be back again!!
Bull Run is always a good place to go. I would have broken 80 save for the very windy day. Oh well, next time.
Winter time.
Playing golf in Virginia on New Year’s Eve, need I say more. The course was in excellent condition for almost being January. A must play, fair but challenging. Greens a very good for being winter time.
