Short Traditional Golf Course
I live within a 40 minute drive for 25 years and I just played this course for the first time. I was missing out on a great old style layout. It’s a William Gordon design who worked under Flynn in his early years and it has a lot of Flynn like design qualities The course was finished in 1960. It is short at just under 6200 yards from the back tees and plays to a par of 70.
The first couple of holes have blind tee shots as do a few others on the course so local knowledge on club selection and targeting is very important. It is also very tight and places with many mature trees lining the fairways. The trees are well maintained and are cut up and back so they will penalize a stray tee shot but it’s easy to get back in play. Take your medicine and move on. The tees, fairways and greens are in excellent shape. Bunkers are in good shape, a bit inconsistent but no big deal. Kudos to the Superintendent and his staff. I imagine as a municipal golf course, they do not have a large budget.
There a spots on the course that have that muny feel like the 6th hole that runs a long a driving range with plastic dividers separating the stalls but it also has trimmed hedges separating the stalls. There are also spots on the course where you feel like you are at a philly mainline country club. It is that diverse. The signature hole is the par 3 14th which plays 220 yards from the back tee. You are hitting to a slightly elevated green from the tee but it’s over a Ravine to a well bunkered undulating green. Make a par here and you’ve done well.
All in all, a great golf experience. I highly recommend this old gem.
Good course
Used GolfNow app to make my reservations. Showed up and teed off without a hitch at my scheduled time. Play was a little slow but its expected. Greens where maintainednin good shape.
Fun round
Booked a foursome on a Friday afternoon and had no wait. Course was challenging with well cut fairways and super fast greens. My only suggestion is to keep the carts on the paths as much as possible. The course rangers flagged us a couple times on the front about being off the path too far. Not sure why they are like that. Everything was bone dry but not heat stressed.
Very sloooow
This course is well maintained and the greens are nice but slow. The fairways are in shape too. But.... the pace of play is extremely slow. 5-1/2 hrs to play 18 holes!!!! Are you kidding me? Where is the ranger? Oh wait... there isn’t one. I guess no one ever heard of ready golf. If you can’t see the group in front of you, you are playing slow, when theees 3 foresome Don a tee box someone is playing slow ... where’s the ranger?? Oh wait , it Bensalem
Wonderful course@bensalem
Wonderful course, great condition, pace of play was respectable. Greens were fast but puts rolled true. I'm playing there again next week
Good challenge, painfully slow pace of play
Despite tornado like weather just a few days earlier, the course was in tremendous shape besides a number of downed trees resulting from the storm's heavy winds. The fairways were plush and well maintained. The greens vary in size, but all were firm and fast and made putting a challenge. My only complaint was the pace of play. I have never played a slower round in my life! IT WAS BRUTAL! There should have been a ranger enforcing faster play, but there was nothing to do but sit and wait. We barely finished before sundown, and the entire round took just over 5 hours! Unfortunately because of this, I will be hesitant to return to play here in the future. It's truly a shame because Bensalem is a remarkable course.
What a slog.
Shouldn't take 5.5 hours on a Monday afternoon. People in front of us were ridiculously slow and there wasn't a ranger to be found.
Deposit
What happened to the 9 dollar deposit from when I booked on line??
Good day, good weather
About 45 degrees at 9 am but warmed up the whole round and was 71 when we got finished. Course is in pretty good shape considering it's the end of winter.
Chilly, chilly
Had made a teetime at another course further north for a time of 11:40 but they called and canceled the day because they still had too much snow on the course. Found an 8:34 time here , naturally a frost delay of well over an hour. Played by myself - first one out - finished 18 in under 3 hours. Lots of extra roll out from the frozen ground. Was getting to 50 degrees as I finished. Take an awl with you to get the tee in the ground. was a good round.
Frozen tundra
Well during this time of year you can expect frozen greens especially when you play early. They were in decent shape but a little hard. Course in good shape and there seems to be maintenance on going to improve the course. Would go back. It’s nice brisk weather to be able to play in January.
Golf in January
Had to wait for frost. However worth the wait. Course was in really good shape for winter golf. The price helped as well with the steal for $28 on golfnow.
