The Village Course at Waikoloa
About
Nestled between the Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea volcanoes, The Village Course at Waikoloa (formerly known as Waikola Village Golf Club) has a beautiful and unique location that overlooks the Pacific Ocean. The verdant, rolling terrain is dotted with stands of young trees and lakes that were incorporated into the golf course’s design. Robert Trent Jones Jr., the course’s designer, tried to maintain the natural assets of the landscape while adding a few challenges such as fairways bunkers and doglegs. The golf course also features traditional raised greens that are subject to forceful prevailing winds. Although the course is challenging enough for the serious golfer, the relaxed pace and beautiful scenery appeal to players of all skill levels. Locals often consider The Village Course at Waikoloa one of Hawaii’s best-kept secrets.

Great Staff; Great Course
What a great course and staff! Tom, the manager, really took care of us (two couples in a four-some). We had booked through a golf booking service and, as a result, there are no refunds if it's raining or windy unless you cancel 24 hours ahead.. We were to play in a few days when a large storm was scheduled to come through. We called and thought about cancelling. However, Tom went out of his way to find a slot for us two days prior to the storm and made sure we weren't charged any rebooking fees. He even called me the night before at 6:00 p.m. to confirm I was all taken care of! Talk about GREAT service. The day we arrived, it was beautiful and busy. Tom made sure we were set and we ended up with a GREAT experience! We went out on time and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We have played the course several times over the years and it was in great shape this year (early February, 2019) with fairways mowed well and the greens in excellent condition. All staff we encountered including at the bag drop, club house, on the course, and afterward were friendly and really appreciative of our business. It was a perfect day on a perfect course! Bravo to the 'tone'; as they say, "it starts at the top". Thank you Tom & Staff.
Unimpressed
Course had some interesting holes, but lacked a true Hawaiian feel. Uninteresting landscapes and many condos dominated the round. Green had been freashly sanded without notice and there were many dry spots around the green. Have never played a course with crushed coral in the bunkers, it wasn't difficult to to hit out of, but it made for tough putting. It was like watching a pinball machine.
All the staff were friendly, and the course was in excellent condition.
Thank you for the great experience
Wonderful course
Course layout is excellent and well miexed with challage ones for most golfers. Good condition of greens but bunkers are not properly maintained as thoses are not sandy bunkers. My sand wedge was damaged. Overall rate is very good when you
have good skills to avoid bunkers in playing.
Paradise
Off shore course with light winds and fair pin placement. Super course, very reasonably priced. A must play. Loved it had a blast. Dan W
Course has had better days
Was very surprised that this course has not been well cared for. Sad to see it in such poor shape. Too bad the neighborhood isn't more appreciative of the jewel it has here.
Ho Hum
Course was very dried out...fairways sparse, and we had to move the ball around to find some grass, the bunkers are ground lava rock. The layout was pretty fun, and with a lot of TLC it could be a nice course. It seems that there are a lot of young local types that play here with a limited knowledge of golf etiquette. The really great courses on the Big Island are private, tied to the Four Seasons or $175 to play, so your choices are rather limited.
Surprise in Paradise on Big Island Kona
I had to cancel playing a few days earlier due to medical condition. In the meantime, I was able do a drive-by quick look at the course. I was not then impressed at all with what looked to be (at first glance) a very plain mediocre boring old-style golf experience.
BUT THEN when I decided to give it a chance, the golf course came to life! The fairways were not perfect but were quite playable. The hazards were plentiful but avoidable. And the greens were superb. Besides playing some of my best golf ever, the beauty of the Hawaiian mountains and seashore with rolling hills to guide the placement of each hole was exquisite.
A surprisingly exhilarating day enjoying the day.
Yours Very Truly Grateful!
Best track/cost in area
Liked that this was an easy access, no frills, straight up see it & swing golf course. Loved that it was an RTJones Jr. design and not extreme or tricked up on any of the 18 holes. Course condition reflected that watering was reduced, but not to the point that the greens would not hold a well-struck approach shot. Compared to some other courses on the island it was not 'too dryed out'. Staff gets a solid grade A-. Really my only knock would be about the bunkers, which were not sand -filled but some mixture which had a content of very small pebbles. Bunkers get a C+ :-( I want to play here again & hope that I can bring a buddy or two over from the mainland when I do!
Value on the big island
Through GolfNow we obtained a good rate for the t-time. Rental Clubs were decent but high at $69 per bag.
Good round.
Had a nice round at Waikoloa. Signed up as a single. Staff tried to get me a game, but none were available. However, connected with two other singles while on the course and ended up having a nice round. Played in a tad over 4 hours. Course was very long from the forward tees which made it tough when the wind kicked up. Condition was good though I had trouble adjusting to the slow greens. Some great views of the area. Nice staff. Would play there again.
Very nice public course
Waikoloa Village is a very nice public course. Well-maintained and has a challenging but not too difficult layout. The traps do take some getting used to as most of them have crushed coral instead of sand. Completely differnt when itting outt of them. Greens are firm but roll pretty true. Overall, it's a great course for the price. Will definitely play again next tie we are here.
Good course, nice views on a clear day, can be quite windy
Like the layout. Not too difficult. Almost all the sand traps have crushed stone or coral in them, so I won't play out of them.
It is a very good course - excellent when the wind is not howling..
vacation golf
good all around course.
open layout, but challenging.
up keep of course was good.
staff very friendly.
wife enjoyed playing there.
would recommend to anyone, regardless, of skill level
Nice alternative to Resort courses
The Waikoloa Village course is actually in the town of Waikoloa Village, about 6 miles inland (mauka) from the Waikoloa Resort area. The course is really nice, is relatively easy to play (wide fairways and few hazards), and was in very good condition when I played. Greens rolled true but were a little slow, probably needed mowing. The layout was really nice and views probably would have been amazing, but unfortunately it wasn't a very clear day. Nene geese were everywhere, but not a problem. Even saw some wild turkeys. I played in the afternoon, but wind was not a factor as I had read it could be. Overall, it was a terrific round at less than half the price (I found a GolfNow Hot Deal) of the courses in the Waikoloa Resort area where I was staying, weekday afternoon play was light and I finished in 3 hours which was awesome, and I would definitely recommend the course to anyone who would just like to play a good round and doesn't need the gingerbread of the high dollar Resort courses.
Enjoyable
Waikoloa does not have the stunning views of some courses, however the price reflects this. Wide fairways with good, fast greens made for an enjoyable round. We played as a two ball and were played through by a slower group but later in the round we could see that matches were bunching up behind them, so pace of play could be an issue for late starters. We found ALL the staff very helpful and happy to chat or answer questions.
If we were here for a longer period we would play it again but we only have 3 weeks and want to play as many different courses as we can. Lucky us !
Good value for money as there are tee time deals around, well done to the staff especially the course marshall.
Nice course
Very nice course. Very friendly staff. Just watch out on #17 if you stank it left past the poles that say no carts beyond this point. It actually means nothing beyond that point. We misunderstood the signs and my son got yelled at that he was on private property by the next door neighbor. My son hit his bal quickly and we left. We were met at the green by the ranger who spoke to my son and drove him back to repair a scuff mark in the grass. Not a divot a scuff mark. Other than that it was a very nice course and will probably play it again. This was a hot deal on golf now, com.

I believe the bunkers contain small pebbles due to the winds that come up out there. I think that without it all the sand blows away.
