Check course maintenance before golfing here
09/02/23 - BAD, FRUSTATING EXPERIENCE. 4 golfers from bogey to +++, 70+ year cumulative golfing exp. GRASS WAS NOT CUT. If a ball was 6 inches off the fairway it took 4 people to find it - walk by 3-4 times before seeing it. thick, deep rough. Ball bounces off green - same thing.... find 2-3 other balls before finding the ball that was hit - within 5 steps of the green.. Spent so much time looking for a balls, it became easy to forget where the other balls were hit so they could be looked for. There was a tremendous penalty for balls that weren't hit all that bad. Will not go back unless I'm certain that course has been maintained.
Nice round of golf while visiting Huntsville
I was visiting family for the weekend and was looking for a round of golf. Nice location north of Madison. Everything was on-time, fairways and greens were in good shape. Being in the rough was punishing.
Great Summer weekend
Met some good people for fun round of golf.
Pace was decent for packed sets of 4-somes.
Improvements i overall course conditions are noticed and appreciated.
Keep up the progress! Looking forward to grass tee driving range re-opening.
Could be a hidden gem
Course was DRENCHED the day I played, but had it been dry, would have been in good shape. Fairways are defined and well filled, greens were green and also in good shape. There’s a couple areas where you go through new home construction, and the range was closed for a complete re-sodding. Would like to play again when dry and not dealing with construction.
Great course for all experience level
The course is wide open and perfect for beginners and still fun for the more experienced.
Great food and bar as well. I will definitely be back as much as I can as it is a great value.
Surprisingly challenging course
This course is well maintained and the staff are very friendly. Lots of the mature trees have been removed for new housing, which has taken away a bit of the beauty of the course.
This course is really coming along nicely. If the last time you played it was last year, you’d hardly recognize it now. It can get a bit pricey to some at certain times of the week, but I don’t mind if I can see the money being put back into the course. Looking forward to how it looks as time passes.
Steadily Improving - still a great value
The new owners continue to make great improvements to the venue. (Noted: the Driving Range was closed for complete overhaul, but looks like it will be a very nice grass surface when done.)
Drainage improvements prove to be fantastic. The 8th hole is playable across the whole fairway now.
Greens were a bit slow, but playable.
I will be back.
Course is improving, but junior rates seem high
Have played here several times over past 15 years. Obvious the new management is investing in improving the place which is great. And all in all, the round was enjoyable. Only downer was paying $46 for a junior seems a little steep at Gayles even for the weekend. There are other junior options in No. AL that are are more bang for buck. Will be using those options for keeping the young ones at my place involved in game I guess.
Southern Gayles
New owners are making many improvements. They reversed the front nine to the back nine. Golfers can stop after 9 and use the restroom ,get food or drinks.
The greens are very soft, receptive to high shots.
I will play this course again.
Much improved.
I have seen several reviews from as recently as 2 weeks ago stating the course was in pretty poor shape. That was definitely not the case today. Tees and greens were in very good shape. Some of the greens were still punched, but rolled true. Fairways were good, not perfect, but this isn't exactly Augusta, is it? There were some patchy areas that haven't fully recovered yet, but it was simple to find grass within a grip length. Course was packed, but moved along well. All in all, a great day of golf.
Southern Gayles, Near Madison AL
I played alone, but 1 fella joined me on 2nd 9. This course was sold to new ownership, they are destroying trees, building houses, and a lake.
1 improvement, they reversed the front nine to be the back nine!, My wife loved that change, made so much sense. after 1st nine we go back to club house for restrooms, drinks and sandwiches or snacks., Layout is very good. Can walk this course if u not age 75!
No good lies on the fairways
Whoever is in charge of maintenance of the golf course does not understand that shaving the the fairways and leaving uneven lies from which to ballstrike is not how golf is played. To properly strike a golf ball requires that the ball sit cleanly on top of the grass (preferably 5/8 inches from the hard pan ground). The managers at Southern Gayle's apparently don't know this. All round long, I hit fairways, and all round long, I was left with hardpan lies, which are far more difficult lies from which to properly strike the ball, than proper good golf course lies, which are a pleasure from which to strike. The difference is experiencing a frustrating round, like I experienced, versus experiencing a pleasurable enthralling round, like I should have experienced.
punched greens
Greens had been punched a few days b/4 zero warning and charged full rate. Also there on the WAAY card that is not accepted on weekends......and for $6 more you can play the RTJ trail......what a joke...........you've seen my last dollar spent here.....NEVER AGAIN....
