Great Lil Secret in Athens, AL
Course under new management. Improvements to course and facilities are in progress.. Course is in great shape. Great value for the conditions. Played 18 with foursome in just over 4 hrs. Will be back and highly recommend. Staff very courteous and professional. Will have to try out that new kitchen next visit.
Sunday Golf in Athens, AL
New ownership is taking the steps to make this course a good one…. Good Value.
Lady friendly and Fun
If your wife or gal plays....this where you wanna play........no bunkers leaving loads of time to fix the other pieces of the golf puzzle. There reversing the 9's ....Im guessing looking for better flow.....Super friendly and the Grill is coming soon........
Fun Course, Good Value
Open, forgiving course. Great for the inexperienced player. Lots of shade though
Overall Good Course
This was my first time playing 18 holes and our experience was good at Southern Gayles. I think once the course gets it’s bar and grill running it will give them a chance to boost their customer service.
Improving under new ownership!
I certainly appreciate the effort that is being put into this place under the new ownership. The course condition is greatly improved and it appears there is more work being put into it to overcome many of the past challenges like poor drainage and damaged greens. There is also now a distinctive difference between the fairway and rough cut which was lacking for the past 10 years. I look forward to seeing the changes play out and turn this into a respectable golf course.
One thing that remains unbearable is the pace of play! Southern Gayles could desperately use a Starter and/or a Course Marshall to improve this. I've been playing here for years and slow players are the norm regardless of time of day. SG caters to a large number of "regulars" who absolutely refuse to allow anyone to play through their groups as well as many novice level players. The course is far too straight forward and lacking much of any trouble at all to be taking over 4 hours hours for 18 holes. During our most recent round we were literally stacked up 4 groups deep on holes 4-9 which should never happen! The new policy of requiring a tee time is a great first step but, I'd really like to see some attention given to pushing along some of the slower groups on the course.
I see positive things happening here and look forward to all of the future improvements but, until that is done I just couldn't recommend the course to others.
This course is abysmal
You would be better off playing golf in your local cow pasture than coming here. Course was in bad shape and the layout isn’t very fun either. Clubhouse looks like somebody’s old garage. Guy in the clubhouse was an absolute cuck. The price is about $30 too high for this monstrosity they call a golf course.
This course has come a long way
I have been playing Southern Gayles for about 10 years now and the new owners have this course in the best shape I have ever seen it. Clubhouse makeover, more range upkeep, better course conditions, and much better drainage of the fairways/greens. Only two problems I had the last time I played were the sprinklers turning on and off quite frequent which changed the speed of the greens yet my round was in the middle of the day.. Not sure if the sprinklers are on a timer or not. Also, none of the water containers actually have any water so either buy enough water before your round or bring enough to last 18 holes, but overall a great course and I love the direction they are going in and will continue to come back.
New owners making great improvement
Putting surfaces greaty improving.
Layout has always been interesting, given the heritage of tree farm typography.
Looking forward to planned course changes to improve natural drainage.
Windy and wet
Southern Gayles is a nice casual track. There was quite bit of standing waters. They noted #17 is cart path only, but should have been closed. No real way to play it without getting swamped. the updated clubhouse is much nicer than my last visit.
Swamp Land
This course is extremely wet. There wasn’t rain for at least two days prior to playing the course, for context.
The course is really starting to get in a lot better shape since the new ownership took over. The greens still have a few rough spots but were rolling really well. The course still has a little ways to go but is definitely headed in the right direction.
Conditions
The fairways were not evenly cut and it looks like they were cut too short because some look like they were dying. Greens were in decent condition. For the price it’s not bad.
Disappointing Say
Course needs a lot of work. Specificaly, the fairways and tees needed to be mowed badly. Greens were okay, but there were bad spots in every green.
