HR
Rode the Blues (6751/72.7/138) in slightly over 4.5H mid day on a GN "Hot Deal". Matched up with 3 nice guys, one was a novice. We let 2 groups play through then got caught behind a younger 4some on golf boards. They got their $$$ on the golf boards, they looked like snowboarders going down the fairways. Sunny, windy and in the 80's made for challenging golfing conditions.
Other than no rakes in the sand, almost no other obvious COVID-19 measures. Cups were normal depth, they provided divot mix and the bathrooms/water stations on the course were operational.
Tees were semi lush and most were well maintained for divots. Some could use leveling.
Fairways mostly lush with a good pad underneath. Both are beginning to show brown spots from the heat.
Rough was fairly lush close to the fairway. Mostly mowed down, not overly penal. Thinner the farther you got from the fairway.
Sand traps had good quality sand and were very well maintained.
Large, undulating greens were smooth, medium fast and they held irons well. They rolled nice!
Customer service was very good. Basic carts do not have GPS, and the course is not well marked for yardages if you do not have a measuring device of some kind. Challenging layout in nice condition. Both the layout and the greens are outstanding. Highly recommended.
Challenging But Fair
You will not be disappointed. Do yourself a favor and play a round of golf on a challenging but fair golf course.
Fabulous Day
A pleasure to play - challenging yet straightforward in parts. A few tricky holes, but hit it long and straight and you will score well - haha isn't that always the truth. Pace of play became an issue for us as we had 2 very very novice groups in front of us that had no etiquette or intention of picking up. Not the Course's fault but we did wish there was a Marshall to move them along. A bit windy but that made it nice and cool and more challenging. Greens and Fairways were great, well cared for. Lots and lots of gopher holes around the bunkers and just off fairways so you need be careful where you step. But we loved it and will absolutely be back for more!
Best course in Central Cal within at least 50 miles in all directionsCoast
Rode the Blues (6751/72.7/138) in slightly over 3H as a single mid day on a GN "Hot Deal". I did not have anyone within several holes of me the entire round. When the weather in Paso heats up, most of the locals play early. Sunny and close to 100 mid day with a gentle breeze.
Other than 1 person at a time and masks required in the pro shop, almost no other obvious COVID-19 measures. First time I have played with "normal" cups in months. They provide divot mix and the bathrooms/water stations on the course were operational.
Few level lies anywhere on this course. The fairways are generous in size, the rough is mostly mowed down and if you get off in the oaks its hardpan. Hilly layout with fairways framed by mature oak trees. From the blue tees, there are several holes where you cannot hit a low shot or you will not clear oaks between you and the fairway.
Tees were semi lush and most were well maintained for divots. Some could use leveling.
Fairways mostly lush with a good pad underneath. Both are beginning to show brown spots from the heat.
The rough was fairly lush close to the fairway, and thick enough to mess with you. Thinner the farther you got from the fairway.
Sand traps had good quality sand and were well maintained.
Large, undulating greens were smooth, medium fast and they held irons well. They rolled ice!
The customer service was very good. Basic carts do not have GPS, and the course is not well marked for yardages if you do not have a measuring device of some kind. Challenging layout in nice condition. Best course on the Central Cal Coast IMO.
Beautiful and challenging
Love this course. Third time playing it and it never disappoints. Conditions were very good throughout and the greens were running smooth and quick.
Hunter, Central Coast gem...
Rode the Blues (6751/72.7/138) in slightly over 4H mid day on a GN "Hot Deal". Sunny, windy and in the 80's. Played with Steve and Rafael as both their wives rode along as our gallery.
COVID-19: Masks only required @ check-in. Restaurant open to go only. No drink cart or water stations on the course. They did have divot mix bottles available.
Hilly layout with fairways framed by mature oak trees. Few level lies anywhere on this layout. The fairways are generous in size, the rough is mostly mowed down and the greens are very large.
Tees mostly nice with good coverage and well maintained for divots. Some could use leveling.
Fairways are nice to play from. Mostly lush and the ball usually sits up.
Rough is a mixture of grasses and thick enough to make longer clubs difficult. Lusher closer to the fairway. thinner the farther you got from the fairway. If you get off in the oaks its hardpan.
Sand traps had good quality sand and were very well maintained.
Large, undulating greens were smooth, medium fast and they held irons well. Some of my favorite greens to putt on.
Very courteous maintenance personnel on this course, they routinely stop if within 100 yards of a golfer. The customer service was very good. Basic carts do not have GPS. Challenging layout in nice condition. Recommended.
Great Course
This course is beautiful. I live on the Monterey Peninsula and drove over an hour to play this course and I was not disappointed. The course is in great condition, the pace of play is perfect, the staff is friendly. During a unique time of social distancing, everyone on course is extremely respectful.
I highly recommend this course.
Fun Course, illogical staff
I booked the hot deal which was supposed to include a cart. There were no carts available due to COVID restrictions requiring one man per cart. That's totally understandable, and I obliged to walk. The only issue is they had single use scooters available, but would only allow my friend and I to ride for an additional $22 charge. This is absolutely absurd and defied logic considering we were guaranteed a cart. Please hope golfnow rectifies this.
Great socially distant golf
In times of uncertainty it was great to get out in the course. Everyone on the course was respecting the social distance guidelines set forth by the county. The staff we’re extremely friendly and accommodating. I will most definitely be back.
A central coast favorite
This course is one of my favorite tracks on the central coast. The course is typically in fantastic shape, with the smooth, fast greens being the highlight. The fairways can get a bit soggy when it’s been raining, but the greens are always perfect. The layout is challenging, but fair. The front and back nines have their own separate character, but the course is fun all the way through. A very good restaurant is available for breakfast, lunch, and brunch on Sunday. The course is a bit pricey, but the Golfnow hot deal can get you out on the course for a reasonable price. Good practice area, beautiful views of the rolling Paso Robles wine country, and a nicely appointed pro shop. It’s a must play, if you’re in the area.
Thank you for your review, revwillamz. We will pass along your positive experience to our team at Hunter Ranch Golf Course. We look forward to seeing you again soon.
Crowded over scheduled day
From parking lot issues to slow service, it could have been a much better experience but there was alot of good too. Golf staff fit us in very promptly after I was late for our teetime, on premises but late. Front side was fairly smooth but something should be done somehow about the logjam that occurs on the 10th tee.
Anyways a 5 hour round on a sunny day was tolerable but excruiatingly s-l-o-w and I never saw a single marshal....
Hello. Thank you for taking the time to review the course and rate us. We are going to pass along your feedback to the staff so they can work to make changes. Thanks for visiting us!
We appreciate the 5 star rating! We hope you come back to visit us again soon!
You Need Marshalls
Played as a single in a friendly paired foursome. Although one in the group struggled (newer golfer), we made our 1 hour “pace of play” reminder on the 5th tee. Foursome behind was a shot behind at this point, with no one in front of us. At the 7th tee, an offer was made to play thru, however, not all 3 golfers were prepared to proceed. We continued and completed the front without delaying play. As we prepared to tee off on the 12th tee, the foursome decided to drive across the bridge despite us being in the middle of teeing off. We decided to allow them thru after teeing off and waving them up from the fairway. They accepted and teed off...One drive goes above my head (I stood off well to the left beyond the hazard), No “fore”...perhaps they didn’t see me, ok...
They then proceed to take 25+ minutes to complete the hole, which included driving their cart on perhaps the most water soaked fairway on the course, searched for two lost balls, then a third around the green...all w/o a “Thank you” for playing thru...incidentally, they continued to drive off the path thru the duration of their round...At the 14th tee, the twosome behind them caught us after we teed off...again we offered to play thru and they graciously accepted...Young Adults who could obviously play, they courteously teed off from the whites in under a minute and thanked each one of us as they proceeded.. that’s how it’s done...now, upon finishing up on 16, a twosome (in their 30’s perhaps) from who knows where decides to cut in front of us on the 17th tee...We inquire if they perhaps came off the wrong tee, but their sullen response was simply “we’re jumping ahead”...When we explained that they could’ve asked (btw, as we all waited for the fairway to clear), they had no response other than they were tired of waiting. It was explained to them that this is not how it worked...they could care less and proceeded to tee off. They then must have seen that the original foursome was still on the green on 17 and decided to drive across the fairway, pick up their balls and drive off behind the 18th green. Needless to say, for 12 holes it was a very pleasurable round that unfortunately soured quickly. My golf cart partner, thankfully, was a Pastor...although he was rather perturbed by the events as well, his patience and forgiveness prevailed...If you do this kind of crap with the normal guys I play with (all whom respect the etiquette of the game) there could have been unfortunate trouble...
BTW, I called the clubhouse to inform them of the events described to no avail...Just went thru the continuous loop of holding. You NEED Marshall’s...
Thanks for playing. We are sorry you had an experience less than 5-stars, but we hope to see you back soon!
Top 5 of SLO county courses
Near the top tier of courses in SLO County. Tee boxes are some of the best in the county, and greens are 2nd, to only Morro Bay, in difficulty. Only drawbacks are the fees & the way the staff treat GolfNow players. G.N fees are what the regular price should be (you're not Pinehurst). You're also treated like a Serf if you are a G.N client & always paired with someone (unlike most other G.N courses I've played)
Hunter Ranch
The Pro shop is never real friendly. Don't understand that. The restaurant is great...excellent food and beverages. This course is beautiful in spring summer, late fall. Winter conditions are not good.
Hello. We're sorry to hear you had that experience. We hope you choose to play us again in the future!
Information/communication
I’m a long time golfer with multiple surgeries. Have a handicap placard and use a tee assist device to continue to play golf. I don’t remember at any time booking the tee time and seeing “cart path only” Got to course and it was “cart path only”. This would be a tough course to walk from the cart path for an Olympic athlete. Course was plenty dry to have 90 degree access. One of my favorite courses and I drove 600 miles to play it. Very demanding and disappointed. Course offered me no additional options.
Hello! Thanks so much for taking the time to drive 600 miles to play our course! We are sorry it was not up to our standards, and we would love to hear more about your experience. Feel free to call the Pro shop, so we can improve for the future! Thanks again for coming out, and we hope to see you back here again soon!
Thanks for the 5 star review, and we hope to have you back here soon!
