The Battleground at Deer Park
About
Created as a tribute to Texas' battle for independence, The Battleground is more of a links-style course that is burdened by the wind and tricky because of the abundance of water (14 holes). Despite its links flavor, the fairways are narrow, and they're lined by thick rough.
Providing sort of a golf experience/history lesson combined into one day, each hole is named after some significant person, item, or event in the Texas fight for independence. For example, one hole is named Sam Houston, while another is named after a pair of twin cannons: Twin Sisters.
No. 8 is one of the signature holes, a 175-yard poke over the water to a green that is shared with the par 5 No. 1. A waterfall accents the edge of the lake, providing a unique aesthetic.
On the back, the finishing hole is fun because you can play aggressively off the tee, free of major hazards in the landing area that is framed by mounding. The approach must carry water, and you'll need to take an extra club because the green is elevated.
Getting there : From Houston, take Hwy. 610 and loop around the city to Hwy. 225 east. Take the first Deer Park exit and turn right onto Georgia St. Next, drive 1 mile to the course, and look for the entrance on the right side of the street.

Golf review
Very nice course, staff great and pace of play great.
Great course with amazing upgrades.
By this summer it will be a perfect course to play
Significant challenges with wind and water hazards
Nice day on the course! Enjoyed play and will be back again soon!
Work in progress?
I’m giving this course a three because it’s in decent shape and the rate of play was very good. There were 4 holes that were closed today due to construction on the bunkers and construction on a bridge to get to one of the par 3 greens. I would rate the greens condition as slightly lower than average, but given the current and coming repairs to the bunkers hopefully the focus on the greens will follow. I also don’t want to rate the course lower than a 3 because I don’t know how much damage was cause by the recent winter storm Uri. I plan to play this course again in a few months and see if the improvements that are being made make a difference.
Horrible course conditions
Fairways were hard as concrete. Many of the tee boxes were dirt. The greens were in bad condition, lots of weeds. Crews were actively working on sand traps and refused to move out of the way while we played. After paying we were informed hole 9 and 18 were unplayable but we still had to pay full price. I've had the same experience this course over the last 5 years, I'm surprised I go back on occasion and hope for a different result.,
Under Construction
The course was in some rough shape. There was a temporary green in the middle of the first fairway and crews working on bunkers on several holes throughout the course. A group behind us mentioned they were told to skip hole 2 (one of the holes with workers present) but no one said anything to us. On hole 8 we saw one of the maintenance guys remove the flag and drop it off to the side of the green as we were getting to our drives. I don't know why unless that was a hint for us to skip that hole too. But again, nothing was said to us in the clubhouse or by the starter. A handful of bunkers were marked as Ground Under Repair and one of our playing partners told us all of the bunkers were currently GUR. So I think the communication from the staff could've been better. The round was just shy of five hours. We did see a marshal go by twice but he never indicated any desire to speed things up. I think for the time being I'm going to have to avoid Battlegrounds but hopefully in the future it'll be a little more playable.
Course has gone down in quality
Always heard great things about this course, when I went though 3 of the holes were under construction a large amount of the sand traps were unplayable due to what I assume was construction. The greens were unkept and some of the tee boxes were almost completely grass less. Great course design wise provides a great challenge just wish they would get back to taking good care of it.
Nice come back
Stopped playing here in summer of last year as greens were awful. They have really returned and we’re clean, true, and fast.
Okay course under construction
The course was undergoing maintenance when I was there, and so some of the holes were either closed or awkward. This was the only issue with the course itself. The facilities staff weren’t the most friendly, and the pace of play was slow. I finished 16 holes in around 4 hours.
