The Battleground at Deer Park

About
Created as a tribute to Texas' battle for independence, The Battleground is more of a links-style course that is burdened by the wind and tricky because of the abundance of water (14 holes). Despite its links flavor, the fairways are narrow, and they're lined by thick rough.
Providing sort of a golf experience/history lesson combined into one day, each hole is named after some significant person, item, or event in the Texas fight for independence. For example, one hole is named Sam Houston, while another is named after a pair of twin cannons: Twin Sisters.
No. 8 is one of the signature holes, a 175-yard poke over the water to a green that is shared with the par 5 No. 1. A waterfall accents the edge of the lake, providing a unique aesthetic.
On the back, the finishing hole is fun because you can play aggressively off the tee, free of major hazards in the landing area that is framed by mounding. The approach must carry water, and you'll need to take an extra club because the green is elevated.
Getting there : From Houston, take Hwy. 610 and loop around the city to Hwy. 225 east. Take the first Deer Park exit and turn right onto Georgia St. Next, drive 1 mile to the course, and look for the entrance on the right side of the street.

Place is garbage! Stay away! Greens are terrible
Please stay away from this course. Greens are terrible, fairways are hard and overgrown Poana grass has taken over, tee boxes barely even have any grass and are rock hard, and bunkers look like they haven’t been touched in years. GM is a joke and doesn’t care about this place.

Horrible
Greens are horrible! Pace of play is consistently a problem. From Groups of 6 playing To the one guy that takes 7 practice swings before stepping away and doing it all over again just to 20yds. Playing the front 9 twice has become a routine just to get In 18 holes within a 4 hr span.
We apologize for the pace of play issue you experienced, Rod. We always try to keep a great pace when having our golfers on the course. Forget it
I was hoping to see a better course than what I saw last year. First green told me nothing had changed... very little grass. Pace of play was good until fifth hole. Threesome on tee at 6th hole par three. Next hole par four.. foursome on tee box... another foursome in middle of fairway. I bypassed this mess to go to 8 hole. No one on this hole. Next hole had a foursome approaching green two holes between these foursomes ! I left and went to another course

Terrible!! Terrible!!
Few recent reviews say the course was in great shape to play I DONT THINK SO!! The greens were horrible horrible!!!!! The fairways and tee box are horrible!!! Those ppl that wrote good review must be getting paid to write them. I agree with a few they should warn ppl about the course conditions and give course discount prices. This use to be one of my favorite course to play. Course superintendent SHOULD be fired for letting this once beautiful course go to S###. OVERPRICED for horrible conditions!!!!!. My opinion STAY AWAY!!

Worst greens
The layout is great but the greens is what keeps me from coming back here. I just can’t understand how this is the only place that has really bad greens. When I heard that they opened up the greens after they repaired them and removed the temporary greens I was happy because I love the layout of this course. I went yesterday thinking that it would’ve only got better and I couldn’t believe how horrible they were. Very disappointing. I give up on this place. Don’t waste your money going to this place that doesn’t care about their course.

Course was Fun for Beginners
Really enjoyed the outing. Course is wide open making it not overly challenging for beginners. My 21 year old grandson has taken up the game of golf and only his 3rd or 4th time on a course so it was not overwhelming for him. Was challenging with narrow fairways and water. Good times until you went to buy beverages for back 9. Twenty one dollars a six pack is extremely steep. Golf and beer go hand in hand so may not be playing course too often

Nice layout. Greens struggling in winter.
Interesting layout with strong par threes. Water in play on majority of holes. Greens were suffering this late winter day with some greens having numerous poa annual clumps infesting them. Bunkers and fairways in good shape. Good value on a fun track.

Help Wanted - Greens Keeper
Just when you thought the greens were coming back around, it appears they are going in the wrong direction again. Tee boxes were so hard I broke 14 tees, and the traps were totally unmaintained. On the flip side, John (starter/marshal) is great. l

Up and down
No other course that I know of has had as much trouble keeping their greens playable as Battlegeound has over the past couple of years. Bunkers were also in poor shape. Defininitely not worth what they charge!

Greens and Pace of Play
The greens were not in very good condition compared to the other courses around here. They were fast, but only because they were cut too short and there was barely any grass on them at all. Plus, they were extremely bumpy because ball marks weren't being repaired. Pace of play is always a bit of an issue at Battleground. There's always a group or five who are playing slow, but refuse to let faster groups play through. It will be a while before I return.

Was a beautiful day cart Path only so it was slow especially back nine greens were OK some pin placement unfair especially number 4 but had good fellowship

Bombs away
Great old course. I believe if they put some money into it, it could be one of the best courses in Houston. Once you get back to the tips the course can be extremely challenging. Lots of undulation, great design. A lot of the greens have a them of being protected by a front bunker. Overall had a great time. My two “dings”’to the course are 1) front was wide open, back was extremely clogged, wait times were unreal 2) Greens could be in much better shape, tee boxes and fairways were ok.
