The Battleground at Deer Park
About
Created as a tribute to Texas' battle for independence, The Battleground is more of a links-style course that is burdened by the wind and tricky because of the abundance of water (14 holes). Despite its links flavor, the fairways are narrow, and they're lined by thick rough.
Providing sort of a golf experience/history lesson combined into one day, each hole is named after some significant person, item, or event in the Texas fight for independence. For example, one hole is named Sam Houston, while another is named after a pair of twin cannons: Twin Sisters.
No. 8 is one of the signature holes, a 175-yard poke over the water to a green that is shared with the par 5 No. 1. A waterfall accents the edge of the lake, providing a unique aesthetic.
On the back, the finishing hole is fun because you can play aggressively off the tee, free of major hazards in the landing area that is framed by mounding. The approach must carry water, and you'll need to take an extra club because the green is elevated.
Getting there : From Houston, take Hwy. 610 and loop around the city to Hwy. 225 east. Take the first Deer Park exit and turn right onto Georgia St. Next, drive 1 mile to the course, and look for the entrance on the right side of the street.

Still Sick
So I read recents reviews and we decided to give Battleground another chance. Well we chose wrong. Golfers call a bad course, “a goat ranch” and this course still fits this title. Whomever is running this course now, still can’t get it right. Years back we would have our Shell Golf tournament benefitting a local orphanage. The course was maintained and run by the city. Golfing Pro, Louis Gantz always did a nice job for us. The course was always pristine and well maintained. Water aeration and waterfall features WORKED! This course needs a lot of TLC. Every hole has something aesthetically wrong with it. Just poor maintenance, period. We also had two flats with the golf carts we were assigned. They brought us a replacement for the first one, we didn’t call for the second. We just “limped” in with the second one.To whomever is running Battleground, we wouldn’t return to your course even if you offered us free golf for a year! Simply unbelievable! The city of Deer Park should also be ashamed of itself for having such a nice layout go to waste.
Battleground Better
Played a few rounds the last 2 years and has been difficult to watch this course go down so bad. However, gave it another chance and conditions were much better. Grass on the greens and fairways a sand in the bunkers. If you have not been in a while give it another chance as they have made improvements.
Impressed
First time playing Battleground. Was apprehensive after reading reviews earlier this year. Completely impressed!! Course is no where near the remarks left for this course in the past. Fairways greens and tee boxes are close to immaculate. Definitely will play here again. And worth the price no doubt!
Great course on the up and up!
I use to play this course all the time years ago when I lived in the area. They started to let the course go, but lately they have been taking great care of it and it is starting to come back to what it once was! This course has a great layout, I hope they keep up the maintenance of this course.
Golf course needs drinking water coolers, as they have no beverage carts during the week.
Marshall’s are there for a reason
When we teed off we knew we were in trouble. There was a 5some ahead of us who were not serious golfers. I quickly asked the Marshall to help us out. He mentioned to the group ahead to let us go through but they wouldn’t do it and the Marshall never came back to check.
Finally on hole 9 we had enough and skipped the hole and went to 10.
We wound up finishing at least 45 minutes ahead.
Marshall’s are there for a reason.
Better than expected
Wee we were unsure about playing here based on some recent reviews and after talking to people that had played there over the last couple of months. We were pleased to find out that they have made some improvements and I am sure that the recent rain has helped. There are was only a couple of greens that needed work and one fairway that had some big cracks in the ground. Overall it is worth the play, but play was very slow.
Terrible condition
Great course layout going to waste because the course is in horrible shape and they don’t enforce pace of play. Waste of a saturday
This was my first time at Battleground, and let me tell you I almost cancelled because the reviews were horrible. DON’T base your decision off the reviews. Yes some Tee boxes are rough and hard to place a tee, but uhm we havent had any rain in Texas in so long!! Out of the 18 holes about 3 greens were a little beat up, but fairways were great. This place is amazingly beautiful and the staff was great! I would definitely recommend and I will definitely be coming back soon!!
Course
Hole 6 was missing a flag stick. No water jugs on the course and it’s over 100 outside. I paid $20 for a 4 pm tee time and I think that’s a reasonable price. I wouldn’t pay more than $20 to play this course.
Hot and Slow!
The course is a nice layout; however, the weather has made for uncomfortable compromises. They have decided to go with cart path only which makes the round even slower (AND letting 5somes play). We quit after it took 3 hours to play 9 holes. The course is not in the greatest shape. Fairways have cracks in them. The greens have huge dead spots and the greenest areas are weed infested. The staff is full of nice people; however, management is trying to make money yet not care about the user experience. I highly recommend playing elsewhere.
