Created as a tribute to Texas' battle for independence, The Battleground is more of a links-style course that is burdened by the wind and tricky because of the abundance of water (14 holes). Despite its links flavor, the fairways are narrow, and they're lined by thick rough.

Providing sort of a golf experience/history lesson combined into one day, each hole is named after some significant person, item, or event in the Texas fight for independence. For example, one hole is named Sam Houston, while another is named after a pair of twin cannons: Twin Sisters.

No. 8 is one of the signature holes, a 175-yard poke over the water to a green that is shared with the par 5 No. 1. A waterfall accents the edge of the lake, providing a unique aesthetic.

On the back, the finishing hole is fun because you can play aggressively off the tee, free of major hazards in the landing area that is framed by mounding. The approach must carry water, and you'll need to take an extra club because the green is elevated.

Getting there : From Houston, take Hwy. 610 and loop around the city to Hwy. 225 east. Take the first Deer Park exit and turn right onto Georgia St. Next, drive 1 mile to the course, and look for the entrance on the right side of the street.

Battleground play

All in all, not the best golf course by any means, but a very good value for the money. I am no professional by any means necessary to be reading golf courses, but I enjoyed it. I actually shot my lowest round of golf. I shot a 90 which I was proud of, it was a fairly easy course and this gave me a lot of confidence for my next round

Most impressive the greens have really recovered. Theres still some rough areas that were apparently too wet to mow, but I think that’s understandable.

One frustration the last 6 holes backed up with about 10

Twosomes waiting. Seems like we could get some Marshall help to fix that.

Overall you’re not playing or paying for Pebble Beach so it was a great experience.

Saturday’s play

Played Saturday with some friends enjoyed the day kind of what you expect for the price nice course for the money dry especially on the Teebox but all in all I would recommend playing this course. I did shoot my best game when I played here today. I’m not a pro by any means but I did shoot a 88 which I was more than happy with best game I’ve ever ever played.

Poorly maintained course

Every year I play Battleground at least once a year to see if they have improved the poorly maintained course conditions. It is the closest course to my house and used to be a great course with great value. This was one of the worst conditions ever. They have not mowed any grass outside of the fairway or green We were spending 10 min looking for balls 5’ off the fairway or green. Some of the grass was over a foot tall. Bunkers are unplayable. It makes pace of play terrible and the course much harder than it should be. They do have new carts but beyond that not sure I will be back.

Not worth the money

Was told on arrival the “rough is rough today”. No, the grass was UNRULY. Pace of play is awful, two separate foursomes waiting to tee off when there’s a group putting and another already on the green. They have tee times way too close together. The course was not worth the price. Staff is always friendly though.

Fun round but in bad shape

Normally we enjoy playing at battleground but this round was just bad experience. The roughs and grass around fairways were not taken care of. Balls lost in areas that should have been found due to high grass when I’ve seen them shorter in past.

Bridges and water

Afternoon solo round. Nice course. Driving range and chipping green. Also a putting green, but who has time for that (note my handicap proves I need to make lots of time for that). I arrived 2 hours ahead of tee time. Hit a bucket of balls. Chipped a few. Drove to the first tee and the Marshall gave me the go ahead to tee off early. I got to say for me high handicap the course is tight in some areas. Not a lot of cross linked holes. I believe it was 10 and 17 share the same green. All the greens are elevated. The rest of the course is flat. Handles water well. Nice fareways. Greens was fast compared to my other places of play. There was a beverage cart but only seen it once in 18 holes. Maybe I was too fast or they too slow.

Good times

The course is in good shape, but they have no drinking water on the course. Pack your own water or be thirsty.

Worst Greens

Don't waste your time or money. Worst pace of play and greens I've seen. Stopped around 3 pm to get a bit to eat after the front nine and the resturant was closed so you couldn't even grab a bite to eat. The greens were trash. Expected more the second time but should have known better. I told the pro-shop the week before we played and we started over a hour late because they kept letting singles who were walking in front of us and and where playing from the black tees and couldn't drive it 150 yards. Took 3 hours to play 8 holes. People kept jumping from hole to hole.

Possibly the worst greens I've seen.

The worst greens I've seen since being in Texas. The pace of play was horrible. Tee time was for 4:36 pm. Tied off at maybe 5:15 pm. Marshall kept making us wait so people walking could go in front of us which makes no sense especially since they were hitting from the blues and their drives were 150 yards mostly. Then kids kept jumping in fron of us. Finally just gave up on hole # 10 and left.
