The Battleground at Deer Park
About
Created as a tribute to Texas' battle for independence, The Battleground is more of a links-style course that is burdened by the wind and tricky because of the abundance of water (14 holes). Despite its links flavor, the fairways are narrow, and they're lined by thick rough.
Providing sort of a golf experience/history lesson combined into one day, each hole is named after some significant person, item, or event in the Texas fight for independence. For example, one hole is named Sam Houston, while another is named after a pair of twin cannons: Twin Sisters.
No. 8 is one of the signature holes, a 175-yard poke over the water to a green that is shared with the par 5 No. 1. A waterfall accents the edge of the lake, providing a unique aesthetic.
On the back, the finishing hole is fun because you can play aggressively off the tee, free of major hazards in the landing area that is framed by mounding. The approach must carry water, and you'll need to take an extra club because the green is elevated.
Getting there : From Houston, take Hwy. 610 and loop around the city to Hwy. 225 east. Take the first Deer Park exit and turn right onto Georgia St. Next, drive 1 mile to the course, and look for the entrance on the right side of the street.

Bridges and water
Afternoon solo round. Nice course. Driving range and chipping green. Also a putting green, but who has time for that (note my handicap proves I need to make lots of time for that). I arrived 2 hours ahead of tee time. Hit a bucket of balls. Chipped a few. Drove to the first tee and the Marshall gave me the go ahead to tee off early. I got to say for me high handicap the course is tight in some areas. Not a lot of cross linked holes. I believe it was 10 and 17 share the same green. All the greens are elevated. The rest of the course is flat. Handles water well. Nice fareways. Greens was fast compared to my other places of play. There was a beverage cart but only seen it once in 18 holes. Maybe I was too fast or they too slow.
Good times
The course is in good shape, but they have no drinking water on the course. Pack your own water or be thirsty.
Worst Greens
Don't waste your time or money. Worst pace of play and greens I've seen. Stopped around 3 pm to get a bit to eat after the front nine and the resturant was closed so you couldn't even grab a bite to eat. The greens were trash. Expected more the second time but should have known better. I told the pro-shop the week before we played and we started over a hour late because they kept letting singles who were walking in front of us and and where playing from the black tees and couldn't drive it 150 yards. Took 3 hours to play 8 holes. People kept jumping from hole to hole.
Possibly the worst greens I've seen.
The worst greens I've seen since being in Texas. The pace of play was horrible. Tee time was for 4:36 pm. Tied off at maybe 5:15 pm. Marshall kept making us wait so people walking could go in front of us which makes no sense especially since they were hitting from the blues and their drives were 150 yards mostly. Then kids kept jumping in fron of us. Finally just gave up on hole # 10 and left.
Rushed Twice celebrating my Sons Birthday
Skipped holes tried our best to keep pace but were asked twice to either pick up the pace or skip ahead of couple in front of us. Which we had no choice but to skip and still it was the same pace. After we finished 18 we circled around back and finished our round. We do love the golf course overall.
Good condition!
Sunday morning tee time for 2 was right around $100. Staff friendly and accommodating. Pace was slow, played through a 4 some that got played through by two other 4 somes….something marshal should address. We were behind a single who was behind a 4 some, I assumed we would pair up, but they drove ahead after teeing and even if we came up they seemed resistant to join up, again something a marshal should control to help pace of play. There needed to being 2 4 somes pretty stacked behind us.
Overall, one of the better values south of Houston, fairways were decent, greens were fair to good and consistent. Some POA on the greens but not too bad. Would def play again!
Thank you
Beautiful front 9. We will definitely be pursuing all 18 our next visit.
Unforgettable experience
This was the first time I brought my kids to a nicer Golf Course and they were very excited during our round. I tried to prepare them for the rate of speed we’d need to play at and to remain focused on the game. Initially we started off rushing a bit ahead of a larger and more experienced, more fast paced group. Courteously, we skipped holes 2, 3, and 4 to get way ahead of that group which gave us some cushion. After that awesome hole 9 we circled back to revisit those holes we skipped earlier. We had a great time overall. All staff very professional and friendly. We will be back. Thank you.
Water Please
Greens are a 6 out of 10, Tee Boxes are a 3 out of 10.
The issue seems water, it is dry, dusty and hard. This makes the fairways and rough nice for the roll but other than that we need a little improvement. The value deal made it worth it though.
Better than reviews reflect
I’ve seen the poor overall reviews for this course, but noticed a lean toward more favorable reviews of late. Decided to finally give it a go. The course was fine. Occasionally ball lands in a bald spot on the edge of the fairway and I moved it a foot or two to some grass. Greens were above average for a course in this price range. This place shouldn’t have over 4 stars, but it shouldn’t have the same review as Southwyck either haha 3.5-4 star course for <$60. Will play again.
Good value course
Course was in fair condition. Some of the tee boxes were very bare but the par 3 boxes were ok. Sand traps were in good condition and the greens were fair given that they are starting to grow back out. Hole placements were challenging.
Solid Course
Staff was super friendly, excited to hear it was my first time at the course, fully went over the course layout and hazards. Fairways were actually pretty decent, definitely better than other courses since the freeze. Greens for the most part were in good shape, only about 3 holes that were in need of a bit of TLC. Just remember you’re in “Stink-adena,” nothing the course or the staff can do about, but it’s easy to get over. Definitely will be back, fun course to walk and good amount of water (not the “take your lunch money water” but the “that’ll be fun water”).
