Thorntree Country Club
About
Thorntree opened in 1984, and while it has changed ownership multiple times over the years,it remains one of the toughest courses in the DFW area. The course features six lakes and three spring-fed creeks that spice up the layout, as well as immaculate fairways and challenging bent-grass greens.
On the front, No. 5 stands out as one of the most difficult holes – a 400 yard-plus par 4 that runs through a chute of trees and doglegs right into a green sided by a pond.
The back is a bit more difficult, which you’ll realize quickly due to the 666-yard double dogleg No. 10. The next hole is only a 382- yard par 4, but the approach is dicey into the shallow green. No. 13 is another nice hole–only 338 yards with another challenging approach into a green that’s guarded by an old thorn tree.
Getting there : From I-35 south, take the Wintergreen Road exit and turn right. Drive 4 miles to the course, and the entrance is on the right side.

Good, challenging course
Good course, with fun and interesting holes. Some are a definite challenge for all but the most accurate players. Staff was great, as was pace of play. Keep in mind that grass is dormant this time of year, thus fairways will be hard and brown.
Sneaky difficult
The staff here is fantastic! The fairways are a little dry but the greens are amazing. Definitely need to make sure that you drive up the course a bit to view hidden shots.
Not terrible
Played on a Sunday for the second time. Very slow round (12:20 tee time, 5pm end). Many tee boxes are slanted. Greens were spongy and slow but otherwise OK. My main qualms with this course is the design. It is not a fair course. Multiple holes have a random tree smack in the middle of the fairway, penalizing good shots. There are many blind tee shots and approach shots. You’d need a yardage book (which they don’t have) or a caddy to know what club to hit off the tee and what shot shape you need. I would not recommend this course.
Very nice course!
A private country club recently opened to the public. Despite winter conditions the course was in good shape. The pro shop was super friendly and very accommodating!! Thank you!! Had a great time and course layout was fun especially in the back 9. Holes 9-16 are the best on the course IMO. can’t wait to play it when it’s green!
Good, Challenging Course
The greens were in great shape. The course has several challenging holes. There were several greens that had just enough slope or elevations that made this a challenging course.
Great old school country club charm
1st time playing the playing the course. Definitely a challenge but can’t wait to play it again
waiting
starting your round 30 min. late would put one in a bad mood you might be able to recover from....not the case when playing s great payout like this. mr.krupa gave us two small buckets for our delay.nice gesture. sad part with a tee time of 2:15 30 min delay means last three holes were not played.great layout with every hole has character .
Great Layout, Tough Course
First time playing Thorntree now that is open to the public. Greens were in great shape. Fairway grass was dormant so want to play it later this spring. Challenging course made even more difficult by 20 mph+ swirling winds all afternoon. The staff was awesome. You will be hard pressed to find a more friendly staff all the way around. I will definitely be back.
Challenging layout
Played on a cold day (High 30’s / low 40’s) so the course was empty, which allowed for a 2-hour round. It’s been 25+ years since my last time here, but the challenging layout I recalled was still there. Course conditioning and maintenance was commensurate with the green fee ($30). It brought to mind the Golf Club of Dallas (the old Oak Cliff CC): the strength of the course design continues to shine despite the decline of age and a limited maintenance and upkeep budget.
Great Track
So this course just became semi-private. It popped up on GolfNow, so I decided to go play. Awesome decision. Staff was great, especially Robin the beverage attendant. I was a single so they paired me up with another guy who had never played it. Course is challenging and fun. Greens were perfect and I I can’t wait to go back.
Nice Course and fun layout
This is an excellent course and in great shape. The greens are in excellent shape.
Fun golf course
While a bit of a drive from McKinney, Thorntree doesn’t disappoint. Course is in good shape, given the recent weather conditions. Greens and layout are its best attributes. Well worth playing.
Throntree Golf Club
Great round at a really good course...staff friendly and pace of play was fantastic. Due to a rain the greens and rough was higher than normal however the round was still enjoyable.
A pleasant surprise
First time playing this course, which I guess is now semi-private. Well worth the drive down from McKinney. The greens and tee boxes were in very good condition, some of the best greens available for daily fee play in the Metroplex. Fairways were okay, given the amount of rain we’ve had lately. Holes had some character, not just a bomb and gouge course. Will play again for sure.
I’m glad they went public!
Greens were in great shape as always! I just wish they had a Marshall. Play was slow because idiots think they should play from the tips when they stink.
