Thorntree Country Club
About
Thorntree opened in 1984, and while it has changed ownership multiple times over the years,it remains one of the toughest courses in the DFW area. The course features six lakes and three spring-fed creeks that spice up the layout, as well as immaculate fairways and challenging bent-grass greens.
On the front, No. 5 stands out as one of the most difficult holes – a 400 yard-plus par 4 that runs through a chute of trees and doglegs right into a green sided by a pond.
The back is a bit more difficult, which you’ll realize quickly due to the 666-yard double dogleg No. 10. The next hole is only a 382- yard par 4, but the approach is dicey into the shallow green. No. 13 is another nice hole–only 338 yards with another challenging approach into a green that’s guarded by an old thorn tree.
Getting there : From I-35 south, take the Wintergreen Road exit and turn right. Drive 4 miles to the course, and the entrance is on the right side.

Pretty good for weekend play
I typically hate playing on Saturdays, but pace of play was tolerable. Not great, but tolerable.
Course was in pretty good shape, greens rolled true, it's a bit tricky the first time to play, some blind shots are out there.
Nice course
This course will test you in variety of ways. The greens are well guarded and there is a good mix of short and long par 4's, with a few very lengthy par 5's from the back tees. This course is difficult and will require several rounds before you know the tricks to mastering it. Definitely give it a try!
Great track
Course was in good condition. Used to be a country club and they still treat it like one. Fairways were taken care of and greens rolled true without any bumpiness. Would recommend
Hidden Gem
For what they charge I definitely recommend this course.
Classic and traditional country club now open to the public
Thorntree has been a true country club in DFW for maybe at least 30 years. For may clubs like this, they find they need to open up to the public to boost the revenue to take the pressure off the members. The layout is really good and some holes are straight forward and mildly challenging. Yet, there are some really great and difficult holes where par is a great score. The stretch of 3,4 and 5 are like the horrible horseshoe at Colonial. All the rain this year is helping to fill in some bare areas. My 3 stars review is for just two key details. One can be fixed and the other probably not. First is mowing. Maybe the rain prevented it but most fairways are too long and hairy. Second is the greens. They are smooth and in great shape but they remain the old traditional Bermuda from long ago. That means “slow”. The newer dwarf-tiff is the faster variety going in all over Texas golf. It’s most likely not in the budget here but if you like smooth greens and don’t mind it slower this would be a great course to play. I guess I am like Goldilocks, not to slow and not to fast, but just fast enough.
Great Course and club
This is a great tract to play. It rewards good shots and penalize bad ones. They had recently punched the greens, so they were a little bumpy but still would recommend it to any golfer of any skill level.
Not what it used to be
I’ve played this course many times when it was private and the greens were always smooth and moderately fast. It went public about a year ago and I haven’t had the chance to play it until today.
We hit balls on the range and went to the putting green before we teed off and was shocked to see how slow and long the grass was on them. There was no arification alert on the list but it looked like they had been airified recently.
We had a 2:00 tee time and at 1:57 we were called to the tee and it was announced a 2 some was going off in front of us. Not too big of a deal but with 4 scratch players in our group it was not ideal to watch this 2 some take 2 off the tee each none of which found the golf course property. They did end up playing fairly quickly but could have been handled by the pro shop a little better.
We teed off and found the first fairway had been airified in places, once again not disclosed on golf now. We came to the first green and to our disappointment it was just like the putting green, slow and bumpy. We found the conditions to be the same throughout the entire course, sporadic fairway airification and slow bumpy greens.
To top it all off we caught a 4 man scramble tournament on our 11th hole and had the pleasure of waiting on them the rest of the back nine.
I attempted to attach pictures of the greens and fairways but it would not accept them on the app.
This group will not return to Thorntree “Country Club”
Nice Course
Course it longer than we usually play but it was a very pretty course. We will be back.
Front 9 was closed
Didn't find out front 9 was closed until I got there.
Tee boxes were rough, greens ok but slow, traps in fair to good shape, especially considering all the rain of late.
What saved the day for me was the outstanding staff. Everyone you meet is doing their best, especially the pro shop guy and the beverage cart girl, who was simply excellent in every respect.
Will play again.
First time..good course, but not after a hard rain
Course was a tough layout. Lots of trees and doglegs. Accuracy is key. Played after a few days of rain, and did not drain well. Overall, good value and pace of play was great. Staff was very friendly and let us go off early.
Thorntree
Thorntree is a nice course, this is the second time playing here. We played after a few days of rain and it was still very muddy and not much grass in certain areas of fairways and the rough. Don’t get me wrong I do enjoy this course, the greens are tough but they roll true and course is challenging.
Fair ways.
With all the rain we have had, one would think the fairways would be better.
Thortree late April
Thorntree is a beautiful layout with challenging greens and terrain. I feel like it’s a precision course that gives you option of the tee but not much room for bailout on the approach shot.
I didn't like the course
the course is in pretty bad shape. The staff was overall pretty good. but it doesn't make up the bad conditions of the course.
Needs some TLC
2nd time to play Thorntree in 2019 since it went from private country club to public course. First time experience for my playing partners. All agreed the course has fallen far and hard from its former days of glory. It needs a lot of TLC. It won't keep me from coming back, just with adjusted expectations. It was about worth the $30 we paid for a Sunday afternoon round.
