About
Poipu Bay Golf Course has an ideal location between the beautiful coastline and lush emerald mountains. The course sprawls across 210 acres of tropical flowers and vegetation. The site is the former home to an ancient Hawaiian village, whose remnants have been incorporated into the course. Golfers have the rare opportunity to play next to 500-year-old handmade stone walls. Poipu Bay's links-style layout features firm fairways, 85 bunkers, and five water hazards throughout. There are open fronts that allow the ball to roll onto the putting surface. Water hazards come into play on eight holes. The unpredictable winds are the most challenging element of this course. The final two holes provide a memorable finish. The 17th features an ancient rock formation known as Mahualepu and the last hole is a demanding par 5 with a large pond on the left and a lateral hazard on the right.

Golfer Reviews
Good Course with Great Ocean Views
Very good course with great layout. Back nine takes you through some ocean cliffs while still maintaining great golf layout. Staff was nice. Only downside is that the normal rate is so high that it isn't worth it. I ended up paying $89 on GolfNow on a hot deal and to me that's about all it's worth. Looking at the course conditions I can't imagine their operating expenses are so much that need to charge $190 per player for a regular round.
Typical Resort Course
Kauai's Poipu Bay Resort course is right next to the airport which is pretty cool if you like to see huge jets landing right next to your fairway, which also means it is on the ocean so there is a TON of wind. It is also right next to the Grand Hyatt luxury resort. My golf now tee time was a hot deal and the pro shop guy let me know by how rude he was to my wife and I. I probably saved around $70 bucks. The pro shop guy Kirk who checked me in was very dismissive and verified I wasn't staying at the hotel and he let me know that I couldn't touch the driving range until 30 minutes before my tee time because we were so early (a little over 1 hour early). By the way, they only charge you for a rider if you book through golf now apparently, if you book through the hotel or pay normal rate the rider is free (it is published that they do not charge for a rider) so that was not a fun $25.00 add on. We had to burn some time so we ate at the grille next to the pro shop. After the $20.00 burger that took literally 45 minutes to get in a to go box we ran to the cart, then to the driving range and it was an OK experience from there on. The course has a beautiful layout, I recommend playing it from the tips, you get to see the entire course and it is very difficult with the wind. The grass was not in as good of shape as the other courses on the island, some sand on the greens and quite a few dead spots, not pristine like the Prince course at all. Also, the bunkers are all waste style bunkers with no sand in them, very difficult to play out of, especially if you are in a deep one right next to the green. The friendliness from the bag guys was fine, and you get a free bag tag with your name on it. Other than the pro shop guy who was clearly a typical entitled rude pro shop manager working at a former tour venue, the course was a typical Kauai course where even with the hot deal I think it was a little overpriced. The only thing memorable will be the poor treatment. I expect more for $120.00 for 18. I highly doubt I will go back next time I am in Kauai. Every once in a while I book a hot deal at a course and get treated like this by a pro shop. Be prepared for it, especially if you go to one of these courses. They obviously don't like it.
Layout is great and well maintained.
Friendly staff from the bagmen, cashier, and starter.
Course is well laid out, great shape, and back nine has a great stretch of holes a long the ocean front.
Great course-challenging, yet fair.
The course is in great shape. Friendly and helpful staff. Good value for the money when playing twilight. The last 4 holes - spectacular views - hard to keep your focus on the course not only on the last 4 but the entire course. Look up from the course and take in the vistas. Great experience.
Outstanding views.
Tricky winds on fairways & greens. Back 9 bunkers a little less perfect than front 9. 15 - 17 may be most scenic holes anywhere.
Superb views, great condition and challenging layout.
The views from this course were stunning to include mountains, ocean, vegetation and landscape of the Kauai coast. The greens were particularly nice with a type of grass that doesn't have grain. There were many strategically placed and well shaped traps along the fairways and around the greens. The overall experience was among the best in over 50 years of my golfing. I will definitely play it again when I get tha chance.
PGA quality
This course hosted the Grand Slam of Golf for several years, and it is a lot of fun to walk the same fairways as Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Vijay Singh, Greg Norman, Jim Furyk, Mike Weir, and others. It's even more fun to go into the locker room and see their plaques. The course itself is not long, but most holes require some tactical thought to score well. Course maintenance is wonderful. The staff is overly friendly, and the golf shop is probably the best-stocked golf shop I have been in.
Great course!
Check it out! The pace of play was brisk due to proper spacing of golfers. The course was in tip top shape, and staff was on top of things!
Beautiful scenery - relaxed pace of play.
Very enjoyable course to play - wide fairways, low rough, and playable pars (White tees, Handicap 16, short hitter), and lots of beautiful scenery. My worst holes were ones where I lost concentration looking at the scenery.
Overall, I found the course on the easy side. Had a reduced rate of $100 (from the normal $150 at the time we played) which I found to be very good value. If I had paid the full prime time rate of $180 I probably would have rated value at medium to low.
very good golf course, a little spendy
Very good golf course with nice vista"s but a little expensive. We were able to get a reduced price on Golf Now which made it more reasonable.
Friendly staff and a wonderful proshop. We found the course to be a fare course but we played without much wind. Some of the uphill holes were into the wind and if it had been blowing harder they could have taken some of the enjoyment out playing those holes for many golfers. If it is windy when you play you may want to choose a more forware tee. The greens were in excellent shape and putted very true. It was nice to play a course on Kauai that wasn't so wet. I would play this course again if I had the chance.
Design and maintenance come together for great atmosphere in which to spend 4 hours.
Although price is at high end, I always bite the bullet once in my annual trip. Think of how much I would bite the bullet if the price came down. This date was very windy +/- 2 clubs all day. Terrific surf views on back nine. Great course - just pricey.
A truly wonderful course
We were very fortunate to get a very good rate online which allowed to be able to afford to play here. The pro shop staff were very friendly as was one of the "cart guys" although the older man was quite surly for soem reason. However, Marty, at the practice range was a gem.......super friendly and accomodating and concered to get first aid for a cut on my finger. It is guys like Marty who make a course great. We set off as a twosome and played the best course we have ever played.....the greens were fast and true and the fairways in great shape. The cart girl came around regualrly and was friendly. The mix of challenging holes was excellent and I could see that this course sets up well for every level of player. We played off the whites but the score card did not seem to match the yardages on some holes which was odd......
In using this feedback tool I was unabale to select anything betwen the middle and the end of each slider bar which made my selections rather inaccurate.
Overall.......a fanastic experience and we hope to come back one day
Play it !
Beautiful course...difficult in places, but wonderful wide fairways.
A Kauai must play!
Course is set up for the wind, but try to play on a day the winds are low. Lots of bunkers and super views on holes 15 - 17.
Excellent Course that could.....
The course is in outstanding shape and having played it the second year in a row, I think it is the best maintained of the three big ones that I have played on Kauai - Prince, Makai and Poipu.
I do think they charge a little bit more especially given the holiday season and then tack on charges for passengers etc.....Here is my suggestion : For the 1st one, given how the game of golf itself could use an additional boost to its popularity....get more aggressive on your pricing....I would say 250 to play 2 rounds of golf - one in the AM and one after noon over a 3 day period could go a long way to have more players! On the passenger charge - please stop charging for kids who are not even playing but are there mainly to understand and see how the game of golf is played. Along the way, their parents buy enough treats to add to the bottom line( one other option...if u do charge then provide a credits of some sort for future use at the club house or something like that )....
This is not for Poipu but golf courses in general - Times have changed and the way you need to look at encouraging participation must change .....The old ways are gone and the game is all the better for that ( color barrier, women participation etc.) so let us not be stuck in the fuddy duddy past!
Beautiful but Challenging
16 Handicap challenged by the strong facing or cross winds on over 50% of the holes. Excellent views of the ocean/cliffs. Course in great condition. Starter was excellent letting us get out early ahead of 2 groups he knew might be slower. Overall time of round only 3 hours.
Can't beat the finishing holes and the amazing ocean views!
I love golfing in Hawaii...Poipu Bay isn't that hard of a course, but when you add the wind, it's a tough challenge. There are times when you'll hit a 220 yard drive into the wind, followed by a 330 yard drive with the wind at your back...hole #16 is a down hill, down wind par 4 of 472 yards from the blue tees, but plays like a 380 yard par 4...can't beat the finishing holes!
Great wide open course
Coursse: course is in great shape tee to green. It's wide open but with a lot of bunkers. Played in high winds. You playing with or against the wind on every hole making club selection a challenge. I often had to club up 3 clubs against the wind or 3 down with the wind coz the course is not protected from the ocean. This makes doe great scenery thru out and especially on holes 14, 15, 16, and 17.. Greens we're rolling true and fast.
Staff was friendly. Didn't like that they charged a $25 riders fee for my wife to rides along when I was playing solo and it wasn't that busy. However, being the first time, they gave both of us very beautiful bag tags which makes a great souvenir.
Recommended course for both low and high handicappers. Just choose your tee box wisely due to the wind factor.
Beautiful Course, Amazing views.
Great course. amazing views. greens were very fast. we played in the afternoon. Allowed my wife to come along ($25-non golfer). Staff very friendly, especially Marty-our started. Great rate from golfnow.com, thank you.
