Nice course that's challenging!
OK..so it is not as green as it could be. The greens and tee boxes are green..the faiways are a bit dry…but I have played on a lot worse. If you are paying $90 to play this..then yes..it is a rip off. If you get a GolfNow or TeeOff deal..which we did at $36 cart included…then I would say it is good value. Practice area is good..nice range with complementary balls and a nice practice putting green. The staff are friendly and welcoming. Like I said…if you are expecting a $90 course you will be disappointed, but if you come with an open mind..and a GolfNow deal..I think you will have an enjoyable day.
Terrible
I hardly ever leave reviews on this site. I read them and usually don’t believe them. 1 star for the greens. Every thing else at this course is a dog track. Terrible dry as a bone in March. Nothing is watered. Not worth 25 bucks. Go to Laughlin Ranch. Only good course around.
Great Day
Staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome!! They have a new Manager , seems very nice!! They have added free range balls. Out of the 4 courses close by this is our favourite!! Great Day!!
Good Potential Unrealized
First of all, the course has a good layout with many interesting holes. The staff are friendly and the clubhouse is very nice. Unfortunately, there was a 30+ MPH wind on this day which presented many challenges. We did not play the bunkers because they were basically hard pan with gravel. Like many courses in this area, the dormant Bermuda grass around the greens made chipping very difficult. I had the most success putting from off the green rather than chipping.. The greens themselves were very hard but putted true. Unfortunately, it was difficult to hold them even with high iron shots.
This course has a lot of potential but right now it is pretty rough around the edges. I doubt that I will play there again.
Not in great shape
Fairways, tees and greens very sparse grass. Sand traps were concrete….no sand and full of rocks.
Fun links-style in the winter
The rye over-seed makes this course look like a links-style. It was fun to golf on a nice non-windy day. The greens were a little slow, but in good condition. Prompt check-in. Our TeeOff rate included the cart. The manager let us park our truck/trailer in the far west side while we enjoyed our round. Good pace.
Good day
Good value for this time of year!! We were a 4 some and finished in 4 hours!!
Wouldn’t hesitate to come back!!
Average conditions
We have played El Rio GC a couple of times in January, previous to this round. This time we noticed that the fairways were drier than previous visits…also a little less green. The greens this time had been tine punched. By the looks of it..probably a couple of days ago. so a bit bumpy…but really not bad. The will probably be smooth again by the weekend. The tee boxes are in good condition. The rough is dormant Bermuda…which is yellow at this time of year.
We were surprised that the course was not too busy…maybe because of the weather forecast…for windy conditions. The front nine was great..then someone turned on the 'wind switch' and it blew 25+ on the back nine. Overall this is still a great deal on GolfNow. I think they are at the hands of the weather…a real good soaking would do this course wonders..but this is the desert. We'll definitely play here again…but on a calmer day.
Strong winds improve your game.
Fun to play if you like wind. It doesn’t go away. It makes you think of different ways to get down the fairway. Could be cheaper to play.
pace depends
The foursome in front of the foursome in front of us set the pace. They did not have anyone in front of them and played in 4:20. They held up the foursome in front of us, and everyone after. We could have played in 3.5 hour if there had been a ranger. slow play = disruptive rhythm=slower play.
