Mauna Kea Golf Course
About
With Mauna Kea Golf Course, Robert Trent Jones Sr. transformed what was seemingly a barren lava field into what is now one of Hawaii's most popular courses. The challenging layout has holes that play right along the sea as well as over 300 feet above. The course tumbles across seaside cliffs, offering views of the beautiful Kohala Coast. The elevated, undulating greens and prevailing coastal winds demand accuracy. On blustery days 200 yards could feel like 1,000 yards. There are also more than 100 bunkers strategically placed throughout. Mauna Kea Golf Course's signature third hole is the course's most well known by far. This legendary par 3 requires a dramatic carry across a rocky shoreline, sprinkled with nooks and crannies that are filled with hundreds of lost golf balls. To prepare for this demanding course, golfers can warm-up on the driving range and putting green.

Exceptional Views - Challenging Course
Have played here before and always look forward to returning. Given it is a bit pricey, it is a special treat when possible. Course can be difficult so choose your tees wisely. Greens in good, not excellent shape and overall the track is welcoming. Slower players in front made the day a bit frustrating with often times waiting on the tee in order to progress. It is Hawaii after all, so a bit of tolerance and aloha spirit goes a long way....
Absolutely Breathtaking!!!
This course was absolutely gorgeous, but not only that the staff was all very accommodating and made us feel very comfortable throughout the round. The pro shop has some really cool souvenir items that I recommend getting and you should absolutely put this on your bucket list course to play on the big island
Challenging and beautiful
Iconic course. Lots of beautiful views, but some uphill holes required to get up there. Bunkers are Rees Jones and challenging. Not an easy course, but fantastic views.
Tough fun course
Enjoyed playing this course again. 2 holes on the water with ocean views from many others.
It’s Mauna Kea!!! No where near the condition of Mauna Lani but no place in Hawaii has the design or terrain. Played 6800 yd tees but can get a ton of roll. Wish they would spend more on maintenance as the traps weren’t consistent and greens weren’t pretty, although they rolled great. Found a couple good deals on golf now and they were actually cheaper than troon card discount rate at Mauna Lani. A must play !
Must play
This course is iconic. It has 2 of the prettiest par 3's you will find. The course is hilly and that gives beautiful views and spectacular downhill tee shots. The drawback is its difficult and the uphill holes are tough. Rees Jones updated the bunkers and they are extreme. They are big and deep, like Bethpage Black or Torry Pines South. It plays tough like a championship track, not a typical resort course. It is beautiful and difficult at the same time.
Always a challenge!!
Great classic course, opened in 1964, it will keep you humble.
The two par 3’s (3 and 11) are as good as they can get, risk reward holes you will remember forever.
Make sure you are up to form for bunker play because you will be in several.
Lots of opportunity to score well, equal opportunity to have double bogey!!
Enjoy the views and remind yourself there’s more to golf than the score!
Great Big Island Course
I've played several courses in Hawaii and Manua Kea is up there with the best. Great course conditions, less wind than other courses in the area, great Pro Shop, friendly cart girls, and challenging layout. Tons of bunkers and the green complexes are very challenging. Easy driving course, but definitely need to be sharp with your approach shots and wedge game.
Spectacular Views
Amazing course. Every hole has ocean views. Some are so unbelievable that it is difficult to focus on the golf course. The course is in mint condition.
