With Mauna Kea Golf Course, Robert Trent Jones Sr. transformed what was seemingly a barren lava field into what is now one of Hawaii's most popular courses. The challenging layout has holes that play right along the sea as well as over 300 feet above. The course tumbles across seaside cliffs, offering views of the beautiful Kohala Coast. The elevated, undulating greens and prevailing coastal winds demand accuracy. On blustery days 200 yards could feel like 1,000 yards. There are also more than 100 bunkers strategically placed throughout. Mauna Kea Golf Course's signature third hole is the course's most well known by far. This legendary par 3 requires a dramatic carry across a rocky shoreline, sprinkled with nooks and crannies that are filled with hundreds of lost golf balls. To prepare for this demanding course, golfers can warm-up on the driving range and putting green.

Mauna Kea from the tips

This course is a big, grand layout. Everything about it is great. Greens are tricky and excellent. Course is long and plays even longer. Bunkers are deep and well kept.

I’ve played many fantistic courses, this course is right up there with the Bandon Dunes courses, Whistling Straits, etc.

It’s a 10 out of 10.

Great Course

Beautiful tropical course. Cheaper thru a Golf Now Hot Deal than as a Hotel guest. Deep fairway bunkers are a one shot penalty, some greens are very slopped and very three puttable from above the hole.

Golf course has good views - in my humble opinion bunkers we're in bad shape not raked and sand was heavy.

Also too many bunkers and almost all greens are elevated- which makes the resort course difficult for average golfer.

Greens were fast but fair.

Magnificent views

Great historic course that Arnie, Jack and Gary opened back in the 60s.

My only complaint for the cost would be the bunkers need some work.

Great Drink Cart and stunning views

My favorite course in the entire island, it’s a must. Then grab a cocktail at the resort bar and enjoy sunset.

Great island golf.

Beautiful course, great condition. On course markings are a challenge or non existent. Hole direction and tee box indications are lacking. Everything else was perfect!

Highly recommend!

Great, challenging but fair course, amazing views

The course design is great, reared smart course management and welcomes all sorts of players for a chance to score a good round. If you are a long hitter (260 yards driver of the tee)I recommend playing blues or blacks, for every one else red (resort tees or whites).

The greens are fairly large, well conditioned, but with challenging and fun breaks.

If you are for a huge challenge, play when is windy, all I have to say is: good luck!

The views are outstanding! I mean postcard worthy and you won’t regret the experience.

The practice area is very nice, well maintained and supplied with plenty of clean and organized balls.

Best public course on the big island

Liked this course better than Hapuna, Mauna Lani (both courses), Waikoloa, Hawaii CC.

The best layout on the island

Very little wind made for a great day. One group spent a bit too much time taking photos but let us play through. The greens are good but have some irregular patches. The only down side was the condition of the traps - grass growing in some and random sand depth - it didn't help that it seemed no one had raked them after their shots. Still well worrh the visit.

Unforgettable Experience!

I had the pleasure of playing this course with my dad in celebration of his 75th birthday and it was an unforgettable experience. The course was in excellent condition and the views were stunning. The pro shop was full of the most irresistible merch and gear I’ve ever seen in a golf shop and I paid nearly as much in there as I did on our pair of green fees. I can’t recommend this course enough, if you have the chance to play here, don’t hesitate, just do it, you will be so glad that you did.
