This Fred Couples-Gene Bates design meanders through high countries, low countries, secluded woods and open fields. The golf course is not revved up on gimmicks or architect steroids. SouthWood's routing flows seamlessly with the existing elements. Its trademark is the plethora of gigantic oak trees. Couples and Bates didn't stick with one theme; each hole is a work of art onto its own. Five sets of tees make the course playable for all skill levels.

although the course had received 4 inches of rain the greens were fast and the fairways draine.

The course is not only well maintained it is in a beautiful setting and has some great views.

Very fun course!

I truly enjoyed Southwood, and would definitely return and play it again if I were in the area. The course was in excellent condition, and it was challenging. The course was wide-open, but still very fun.

Solid Course

Especially with GN.com discounts(which can be huge) the course is a great value. If your one with great length and love to hit driver off almost every tee, this course is for you. Also caters to those who like to play more of a finesse game.

Ive played it twice in the last week(Only times I have played it) first time through I played driver and aggressive, second time through I played for locations(Since I knew the course, at least minimally) and shot 81,77 respectively.

Some very tough greens IMHO

A must play course for all skill levels

The idyllic setting in this new part of Florida is a great starting point. The gigantic ancient oak trees are amazing and add a very special touch to the surroundings. It was so peaceful I used the term Mayberry at one time.
The course has 3 men's tees to fit your skill level. I played the #4 tees at about 6650 yards and found it very playable. I was amazed they had well manicured bent grass greens. Oh, and the price was very good especially compared to the prices of the courses in Destin, FL.
The staff was more than welcoming and the clubhouse looked like a southern plantation home. I highly recommend the course and the area.

Greens had recently been aeriated but still rolled well.

Had the greens not been in transition, I would have given it a pristine rating.

Good layout, friendly staff

Played the course right after they had aerated the greens so I cannot comment on their normal condition. The rest of the course was in good shape though some of sand traps could use some maintenance. All of the staff were friendly and helpful.

The par 3's are challenging as are several of the par 4's. The course is a good combination of easy and difficult holes. My biggest complaint is the lack of yardage markers or mismarked yardages on some of the sprinkler heads. Previously the carts had GPS but now they don't. You definitely need a GPS or range finder since several of the greens are 4 club greens from front to back.

Overall great experience

I have lived in Tallahassee for over 15 years. Since Southwood opened it has been the most consistent with their maintenance from tee to green. Always a pleasure to play the course.

If I had one recommendation since the course no longer has GPS
is to put more yardage markers on sprinkler heads. This would help with pace of play for golfers without range finders.

Proof that it doesn't require distance to make a course challenging.

What a great golf course. I have played here 3 times now and I just love it. It is in fantastic condition and plays very fair. Course has every type of challenge. Short and tricky, Long and hilly, uphill, downhill you name it. This course gave up 2 rounds well below the guys in my 4some's handicap and 2 rounds way over. That is always fun. When a course can be scored on or it can have you stoping for balls at the turn. There were a few places that had thick brush that I would have expected to have been mown down. (Hills around the Cart paths and such) where you wouldn't expect to lose a ball and we did, but in general this place continues to be a treasure in the States Capital. If you want to play in Tallahassee Southwood will not disappoint.

It was raining most of the day and the course played very dry not always typical in FL.

Freddie put up a stern test of golf here.

I would have given the course higher marks for conditions if it had not been winter and they don't overseed the fairways. That being said, this course has a very good layout that is a solid test of golf, however it is quite fair. Upon arrival, i was met by a very friendly and attending staff. The practice facilities were very nice. My round was played the day after a full collegiate tournament with 10 major teams, so I saw the full on Sunday tournament pin placements. While tough to get at, they were fair in the setting. The course has a lot of great risk/ reward holes, as well as a nice smattering of holes that give you a chance to let the "Big Dog Eat". Overall, I would list this course as the "MUST PLAY" in the Tallahassee area.

Nice course

Played on a Saturday morning, pace of play was good despite it being bitterly cold. Greens and fairways were in pretty good shape. Course layout is good with a mixture of challenging and easy holes. It was a fun round and a decent value. GPS units could really help on this course since yardage wasn't always easy to find.

Well rounded course. Tough holes but plenty of birbie chances too. Greens rolled perfectly.

Southwood is a challenging yet fair course. With good tee shots the holes can yield some birdies. Shoot for the middle of the greens to succeed on this Couples design. Always in very good shape.
