Working to improve
The course is decently laid out and has its challenges. Lot of repairs and sod laying on day I played. Needs water to soften up fairways and get sod and existing grass to take hold and flourish.
Sand canyon
This course will be amazing when they finish it. I would say give it another 6-9 months. You should only play this course on this conditions if it's free or less than $20. Staff is great. It just needs time to be on playable conditions.
Hit it straight!
Greens are perfect. Bunkers are even better (except where newbies didn't rake). Lots of green grass to play from. Local rule: if you're on dirt, move it to grass. No penalty. True, it's not ready for a U.S. Amateur, but not many courses are. But when they finish the renovations, it will be the pre drought, pre fire course we remember and loved. Leave your attitude at home and enjoy the experience.
Course needs work
Cart broke down, big dump trucks driving on cart path
Sand Canyon Country Club
It's a shame, such a nice course has gone downhill
There is construction going on all over the course, hopefully good things come from this
Not Ready
This course is not ready to play. They have laid out grass all over the place and it is all dead. On several holes all you heard was machinery moving dirt. We quit after the 6th hole as it took 2 hours to play to that point. Staff was very understanding and gave us a rain check. Apparently there was a tournament 4 groups ahead of us and were very slow. But still - isn't that what marshals are for? Give this course at least another six months and hopefully it will find some of its old glory as it was a very nice and challenging tract before all of it;s problems. Again, however, I do want to saw how understanding the staff were.
Much work still needs to be done!!!
Due to the fires in July 2016 the course suffered major damage and while it finally reopened, there's still much work to be done. Eventually the course changes will be welcomed, but until that time the course conditions are somewhat poor. As always, the staff was great :))
A shame to see a course like this go down!
Robinson Ranch has fallen on very bad times. Golf course is in terrible shape, and now they have to charge the same fees as Knollwood Country Club (LA County owned municipal course) in order to get any business at all.
Such a shame. This used to be a really nice place to play golf. Changing their name won't help them.......
The clubhouse is still very nice, and I am sure that their food is decent, but when I want to play golf, nothing is more important than the course itself!
Not Playable Yet
This course suffered damage from the sand canyon fire last year. Workers were laying sod on a third of the holes but the course was not watering hardly at all. When you lay new sod you have to soak it so they are basically throwing money away. The entire course is full of dead sod. The greens were in good condition, surprisingly. A lot of the tee boxes in fairways were not mowed and there was dirt everywhere. In another four years this course will be beautiful but they should not have been letting people on the course so that it could have a chance to mature.
Worst course ever played
I have played this course several times in be past it it was in very good playing conditions but now they should be ashamed for charging the green fees they do to play that course, there is no way it should be open. And the starter had the gull to tell us before we teed off that the course was in excellent condition, boy was he full of it .they lost a forsome that will never play that course again no matter what condition they say it's in...unbelievable, it's gonna cost them more in lost greens fees down the road then they are making now by having that sorry for excuse of a golf course open now. I should have asked for a refund before the turn.
After the round I said something to the guys in the pro shop and they said everyone that comes in basically says the same thing and they agree it shouldn't be open. But I understand they need a job and I feel sorry for them having to make excuses for their supertindent and golf operations manager....
Renovations!
Robinson Ranch GC is undergoing a big renovation and is not ready for play. Fairways are not cut and have a lot of sod being replaced. My thoughts are , they should have waited another few weeks to re-open. The price, even discounted through Golf Now was too high for the course condition . I've played these conditions for a lot less at local clubs.
Not ready for prime time
I live near the course and have played it many times. It is a very good layout but I feel it is 6 months away from being in proper condition. Recently it reopened and I expected it to be in better shape. Shaggy fairways, some half dirt. Greens were ok but from tee to green it is in rough shape. At the moment they should be charging around $25 to play it. I paid nearly double that and in its current condition felt I overpaid. There were many areas with new sod that looked to be dead already. I am hoping ownership will complete the renovation. It's a fantastic course when in good shape.
No maintenance
No maintenance at all.
Most of the areas were dried. Looks like a carpet.
Green fee was way too expensive. most of the ladies tee boxes under the construction. They put mats instead.
Under repair...
Both courses were devastated by the fire 8-9 months ago. The course is in the process of repair and changes to the layout. When finished it will be stellar again. Quite a shame to see acres of oak trees burned out. Despite nature's destruction the course was playable with the usual difficult unplayable roughs. Course was a little dry but considering what it has been through I was glad to play it.
Should have been told warned about major landscaping
Would recommend to a friend once the major landscaping work is completed.
The layout and scenery are beautiful and the new under construction lakes and other features will make this course outstanding.
Our complaint is with Golf Now not having a comment about these renovations in their "Tee Time Notes" section of the app. Some of the front/gold tees were 4 driving range mats... Not sure where the responsibility lays to advise of this; the course to Golf Now? We booked through Golf Now and chose this course as there were no notes about aerification alerts.
Positives:
We paired up with two golfers who have played this course before and that was a good thing for us.
The clubhouse is gorgeous, pro shop well-stocked and employees polite and helpful.
Under Repair... Getting Better... Do Not Overpay
My second time playing the course this year. First time was back in early February. At that time I was having to navigate bobcats and bulldozers parked on the punched fairways. This past weekend (4/2/17) the tractors were cleared off the course and the fairways were grassy. I can't wait to see what this course is like once the construction is complete. The Sand Canyon Fire damaged significant portions of the course and the owners are working hard to get it back to what it once was. The greens are in good condition but other than that the course is a mess. The fairways are a combination of sod, dirt, and new growth that the grounds crew will not yet mow. Tee shots that land in the fairway will have you thinking that you hit it in the rough. I knew after my first round here back in Feb that it would take some time, but two months later and the fairways are still in desperate need of care. Several tee boxes are under construction. One Par 5 on the front 9 has been modified with "temporary tees" to play as a Par 3. My round was really frustrating because you look at this course and it's layout and you just want to go at it! The sharp doglegs and protected greens, deep bunkers and well placed trees, this course is a great challenge. It's just not quite there yet. The weather was perfect. The wind whips through the canyon at times which really gives you a thrill. I think that the hardest pill to swallow when it comes to this course and it's condition is the price. I got my round as a hot deal on Golf Now and at 55.00 for a 1pm tee time, I over-paid. I honestly feel like the course, in its current state, shouldn't cost more than 25.00 for a morning round (this is what I paid back in Feb). The price jump made me think that the course was back up to par and ready to go... certainly not yet the case. Management really should give an advisory that the course is damaged and still under construction. My advice is to wait a few more months and give this course a chance to continue its rehab. It will get there. Until that time, do yourself a favor and go play somewhere else where you will have a better experience. This gem will be back... it's just a matter of time.
NOT READY FOR PLAY YET!
Robinson Ranch has been for years one of the top public courses in the Los Angeles area. Unfortunately hit hard by the SoCal drought and recent fire, the courses were in very poor conditions and close down for a period of time. It has recently reopened The Valley Course, but it's NOT READY FOR PLAY YET, pretty much every hole is under MAJOR construction and renovation . Temporary t boxes, ditches, expose pipes, and wires, hard sand bunkers with weeds growing out, recently layed grass and still plenty of bold dirt areas. No available driving range and cart path only for the entire round.
Only the greens are in top condition.
I do recognize the great efforts of Robinson's Ranch management to bring the course back, and the need of revenue to do so. But they should have the responsibility and honesty to let the players know the true course condition. I was told when I called, "with the recent rain the course is in great shape". NO!, the greens are in great shape, the rest of the course will hopefully return to the great track conditions it once was. Until then, I will find ANOTHER COURSE to play.
Not ready for prime time
Course is being rebuilt and if you like playing from dirt this is the course for you. I won't be back . Give it a year and maybe.
