#1 Knollwood Golf Club Photo submitted by kidcody on 11/30/2012
Great course
Course is in great shape. Really difficult, fun course and great price. Only complaint would be bunkers. But hey just dont go in them! Played here twice and the first 4 holes were slow both times but then pace picked up after.
Course is kinda tough enough for the average golfer with the hills n valleys through the neighborhood… Putting Greens Good Condition.. just wished they’d get on these people for slow play… especially when each Tee Times are like 8 minutes apart… people need to just drop another Golf Ball when it’s unfounded within :45 seconds
Great Bones and Surroundings
Knollwood must have been brilliant in its glory days. The course is a nice layout in beautiful surroundings. The course is like playing in a funnel so shots off course fall back in. Staff is great and you get the idea when it was a private club it was fantastic.
Now, there is no understanding of Golf Etiquette. There are no Marshals governing play. So the pace of play is brutal as no one allows faster players to go through. At hole 13, par 3 there were 5 groups waiting. The bunkers are poor quality and no one takes them. It was like a sand playground. Well hard sand. The greens are full of divots. I was shocked because the course layout and surroundings are beautiful.
Then I realized it was operated by Los Angeles County and you can see why no one cares. There is no pride of ownership with this grand course.
My recommendation is to be either the first or one of the first to play and it may be an enjoyable round. I was 5 hour 18;minute round. That is horrible when a Marshal on the course could have pushed the slow play people or moved them off the course.
Horrible pace of play
3 groups were waiting at the 13th hole tee. Ended up giving up playing. Not worth to wait 30 min to play a hole.
Pace of play
Pace of play is by far the slowest. I understand the Senior citizens that play here on a weekly basis, but the fact that there is no Marshall to help with pace of play, and the fact that 4 of the 18 holes took over 26 minutes to complete each is clearly a reasonable meaning of my frustration.
Disappointed is an understatement
Played Knollwood multiple times in my golf life going back 20 years and going in, always know to expect a slower, 4 1/2+ hour round and this latest one was no different. What made this one different than the many other times I’ve played was so many other things.
First off, the pro shop had about 7 or 8 younger guys working there all of whom looked like it was their first day near a golf course. Checked in and since we were about 45-50 mins early, they weren’t able to give us our carts until closer to our actual tee time which was totally understandable. Asked for a bucket of range balls and they pour the bucket out of a trash can simultaneously dumping water onto the floor behind the counter.
Went to the range, got warmed up and then went to the practice putting green. About 15 minutes before our round, went back to the pro shop to get keys to the carts and the guys behind the counter said they still didn’t have any but they hope to get them before our tee time. 5 minutes before our tee time, went back in and asked for cart keys because we noticed 2 carts waiting, the guys behind the counter asked what time our tee time was and when they realized how close it was, scrambled and gave us a couple cart keys so we could get setup. Side note: one of the carts had a low air tire that we didn’t notice at first and also couldn’t report to anyone upon returning the cart at the end of the round. And the divot replacement sand was empty of both of our carts with no where to fill them. All of this while stacking tee times 8 minutes apart from each other because they need to strangle as much money as they can out of the course while seemingly not putting money back into the course.
Secondly, No starter to make sure groups are starting on time or anything just form a line and go. No marshals on the course asking people to speed up pace of play. Cart girl had a regular golf cart with an igloo cooler with no ice in it and a snack basket set directly on the seat next to her.
Thirdly, the conditions of the course were bordering awful. Fairways were chewed up and not well maintained, the rough looked as if it hadn’t been mowed in awhile, same with the second cut of the greens and the recent hole replacements left with bumps that made the greens bumpy and uneven. Also, while there are bathrooms on the course, none of them were unlocked with no mention of this from the above mentioned 7 or 8 employees and also no signage apologizing or stating that they are unavailable for use.
Knollwood used be an immaculate course that was very well maintained and with top notch staff but after my latest experience there, I’m not sure if I’d return to play there again.
Great day!
Had a great day! Was paired up with a cool couple! Had greats shots and pace of plays was perfect!
5+ hours on a Tuesday
Absolutely excruciating to have to play so slow at a short course.
3 hours for the front.
11:15-ish tee time, started 15 minutes late.
When we turned, we all thought we would not finish.
I thought we would be done in 4 hours TOTAL since the course is only 6300 yards from the blues!!! Come on people!!! What happens here that makes people play it almost 40 minutes longer than other courses???
They have to sort this out. Remind people to keep pace with the group in front and pick it up if they don’t see anybody in front of them. Unforgivable and unconscionable. Please do something about the pace.
Course was still muddy in many areas.
