Bear Creek Golf Club - West Course
About
Conveniently located adjacent to the DFW Airport, Bear Creek Golf Club serves up two Ted Robinson-designed, 18-hole masterpieces that are known for their stunning topography and outstanding greens. And with both golf courses playing around 6,700 yards from the tips, golfers can hit long irons and fairway woods off the tee to keep it in the fairway, which is mandatory for a good round on these tight courses. Bear Creek's West Course is demanding early, and is significantly more difficult on the front side. However, the back side opens up and allows some room for error, making this the track of choice for the high handicapper. Nos. 6 and 7 stand out on the demanding front. No. 6 requires a blind tee shot and an approach over water, and no. 7 might be the most difficult on the golf course: a 380-yard par 4 that plays into the wind and also involves water. The back side has the signature hole, the scenic 180-yard 17th, which plays along a lake.

Beautiful course
The course was in fantastic shape . The greens were fast. The staff was incredibly friendly. Could not have asked for a better day of playing golf.
absolutely worst experience. slow. lacks professionalism and friendliness. removed GPS 3 weeks ago and fail to tell you. no yardage bok with green fees and several holes are strategic lay up holes requiring that knowledge. sand was dirt. one rake for 3 traps on a single hole. tee boxes all crowned and beat up.
Much improved course over the last couple of years
I live/play in the Flower Mound area, and the West course has become my favorite in the area for the price. Nice , efficient staff. West course has alot of old-growth trees that make it challenging to play. A lot of trees have been cut out in the last couple of years, also. Greens were just punched but otherwise great. Fairways and sand traps in great shape; Tee boxes were a bit chewed up.
Summer of green
The course is in good shape, we've had a lot of rain this summer so it's helped keep the greens in nice condition with the heat
Greens under aireation so not fun putting but rough was ridiculously high thick. You guys control pace if it takes 5 minutes to find a ball just five yards off line. Great fairways so lush and wide in landing areas. Bunkers could be fluffed and raked: No uniformity from bunker to bunker.
Good value with some care could be very good. A long way from excellent but very good is within reach. If you mow the rough so we can find our ballls
Slow, but enjoyable
Played East course at 10:30 am on a Wednesday. Place was packed. Just over 5 hours for the two of us to play. We did lots of waiting on each tee box. Marshall was out on the course plenty. Course was in decent shape. A few greens were bumpy. Some traps were rocky. Fairways were good. Cart service was good. Plenty of blind shots which made it rough for my first time here. No gps or layout on scorecard.
Beautiful Course
If you like elevation changes and a unique layout. Bear Creek West is the place to be.
5 some is the norm
This is a continuous issue at this course. The staff lets groups of 5 go out no matter what skill level the group has. This is rarely done at most courses and it's even more rare on a weekend. Bear Creek for some reason does both. This slows play, backs up tee boxes and frustrates players. I hate having to wait on every tee because of slow play. In the case of this round I had two fivesomes in front of the group I was in. I stopped playing here because of this issue and will not come back because of it.
Good has its downsides
I played Bear Creek West 8/22/17 with an off-duty course marshal. Bear Creek is ALWAYS CROWDED. Pace of play is ALWAYS an issue. Both layouts are difficult for anyone with a handicap higher than 18. Why? For example, 5 of the first 6 holes on the West course have blind tee shots and some have uphill approach shots. This means you cannot see where your ball lands, even in the fairway and especially if it has any cut/slice or fad/hook. Fairways are relatively tight. This topological feature really slows down play. Both of us lost TWO balls on drives that went over a fairway hill and we never found them. mostly because we never saw where then landed or how they rolled. And there were several balls from a parallel fairway that complicated pace of play. We waited on every tee box 5 to 10 minutes mostly due to the slow pace of play caused by the same factors affecting the groups ahead. I saw a lot of people abandoning balls ahead of me. Although I had to wait all day, I felt "crowded" and "pushed" all day too. I had good company but I never felt relaxed or happy about playing golf that day. I can only remember a very few time in my well over 3,000 rounds I felt that way.
However, either Bear Creek course is a great course to play. They are in excellent condition, except for dried-up water hazards due to recent droughts. I have loved this course for almost 40 years. This is a great set of courses, but as Yogi said, "no one goes there anymore it's too crowded." So it is with Bear Creek.
Bad experience?
First, the GolfNow deal said there would be gps and there was nothing. Not a small hole layout on the scorecard or even a pin placement map. Didn't know distance or where the turns and bunkers were. Second, there was not any indication on the booking that the greens were recently aerated. They were pretty rough and basically would make the ball jump and change direction. I could see where this course could be really nice but it was in pretty tough conditions this round. Maybe give it another try, maybe.
Wet and Messy
In fairness to Bear Creek they had a big rain, over 2 inches, the night before we played. It was cart paths only, as it should have been. Virtually every bunker was completely full of water. We saw one guy working to drain them out all day. My biggest problem was the shape of the greens. They had recently been aerated and heavily sanded. That coupled with all the water made them virtually unputtable. In my opinion the course should have probably just been closed that day. Due to the weather and the greens, it wasn't much fun playing. I will go back but not until it dries out and the greens have healed. We wasted our money that day.
Punched greens
Greens were awful and there was no warning about the punched greens. Bunkers are not playable. We knew the bunkers were bad and play them as ground under repair. Cannot play greens right after they have been punched and sanded.
Great Round with good pace
I play this course often, so this round was at one I am familiar with. That being said it is an awesome course woth very friendly staff. It is well maintained and a lot of fun. If I had a negative it would be the heat, which is expected because it is Texas, and that the drink lady did not come around often enough. But this is my go to local course and I really enjoy playing here.
Nice layout...but that's it
Played East. Pretty cool layout, greens weren't bad either, and for how packed it seemed to be, the pace wasn't unbearable. That being said, the bunkers are complete garbage. I've never played a round where I pulled balls out of bunkers to save my clubs before, until today. The guys me and my buddy got paired up with recommended we do so (they're regulars here). The bunkers are full of rocks/gravel. I don't put much stock into clubhouse workers because I only ever have to talk to them for a few minutes, but the kids working in there on this day were rude and clearly didn't care what so ever about the players experience. This was me and my buddy's first time here and they gave zero advice on anything. I asked where we needed to go to tee off, and the kid just pointed outside. I could've easily played the west course by accident had I not asked another player outside. At the end of the day, I will not be back here.
