Rio Hondo Golf Club
About
Located just minutes from LAX, Rio Hondo Golf Club is conveniently accessible from the South Bay and Orange County. Golf Digest has ranked the course as one of southern California's "Places to Play." The 6,370-yard layout is narrow and challenging, placing a premium on accuracy off the tee. Many locals consider it to be the toughest golf course in the area. The course features tight, tree-lined fairways and subtly contoured greens that are faster than they look. It's not a particularly long layout but the par 3s provide some good length. Golfers will face a variety of challenges throughout, but there is also plenty of scenic respite. Sparkling lakes and cascading waterfalls are scattered across the landscape, coming into play on a few holes as well. In addition to the golf course, there is also a lighted, 30-station driving range at Rio Hondo G.C.

Hidden gem
I’ve been trying to play this course for months now, but early tee times are always difficult to secure as they book fast. I was lucky to get a mid morning tee time and was happy with the outcome. The layout is great and somewhat challenging with the several water hazards. Greens are well kept and pace of play was good/average. Finished 18 holes in 5 hours which seems to be the norm as it gets later in the afternoon and day. Would definitely recommend and look forward to playing this course again soon.
Great layout
Really great course to play that has enough hazards to make it fun. Tee time was a 1:40pm on a Sunday and it took about 3hrs 30 mins to get through 9 holes. Pace of play was extremely slow. We did not see any Marshalls to keep the pace moving.
Well kept course
Awesome course. Reminds me of some of the more expensive courses in Palm Springs. Although it got dark and I left my 69 wedge on a green and we back to look for it and couldn’t find it: if anyone finds it please take it to the Pro Shop! Overall great place to golf.
Pace of play made it not worth it
The course is great but the pace of play was horrible! We started at 1 but couldn’t finish the course due to the pace. At one point, there was 3 groups on the par 5 at the same time! There was about 6 carts waiting for the par 3. Other than that the course is nice.
Narrow but fun
Course is in good condition with the exception of the sand traps. Seems like most LA County courses have the worst sand traps around. Lakewood golf course is the same exact way. I think it’s at least thing or something. Anyways the course was pretty fun pace is pretty solid Only got nine holes in had to leave early and it was hot as balls. If they fix the traps I’ll come back.
Worst Experience Ever
I’ve never seen 4 groups waiting to play the 8th hole, but it happened at Rio Hondo on a Wednesday afternoon. Close to 3 hours to play 9 so I walked off at the turn despite paying for 18. Don’t know what they’re doing with their tee times but it was absolutely atrocious. It’s a shame too because the course is in decent shape but avoid it if you can if you’re in LA.
Turtle Could Walk Faster Than You’ll Play
6 hour round at 12:52pm on a Friday. If you like waiting 10-15 minutes on every hole this is your course. $55 to sit in a golf cart all day. Condition of the course is the only thing this course has going for it and it’s just okay. Greens are very very slow, will mess you up at a halfway decent course. 3 star difficulty because it’s very challenging to take a 15 minute break between every hole and still play well.
