Rio Hondo Golf Club
About
Located just minutes from LAX, Rio Hondo Golf Club is conveniently accessible from the South Bay and Orange County. Golf Digest has ranked the course as one of southern California's "Places to Play." The 6,370-yard layout is narrow and challenging, placing a premium on accuracy off the tee. Many locals consider it to be the toughest golf course in the area. The course features tight, tree-lined fairways and subtly contoured greens that are faster than they look. It's not a particularly long layout but the par 3s provide some good length. Golfers will face a variety of challenges throughout, but there is also plenty of scenic respite. Sparkling lakes and cascading waterfalls are scattered across the landscape, coming into play on a few holes as well. In addition to the golf course, there is also a lighted, 30-station driving range at Rio Hondo G.C.

Playing with the turttles
This is a nice course but for 236 to 510 we got to hole 8 after waiting over 10 min We got to tee off. Sadly couldn't play any more due to I had to be at work in 30 min. I've never played a course so slow. No marshals once twilight hits and ya charge the price I paid for strawberry farm, black gold and oak query. Not the same caliber
Slow pace of play
Not worth the price they charge considering you won’t finish a full 18. Second time playing here and both times, we were delayed by 20-30 min. We waited for every shot, I mean every shot, both times I’ve played here. They stack the tee times too close to one another, which is what I think causes the constant delays. Both times we only finished 13 holes, with the front 9 taking about 2 and a 1/2 hours to finish. Then the next 3-4 holes taking another 1 and a 1/2 half hours. Really really really slow pace here.
Go elsewhere
Rain
Kept the tee time even though the heaviest rains of the year had dumped 6-8 inches of rain over the previous 36 hours. It was cart paths only for golf carts but the course was very playable. Only on the 18th fairway did we have to relocate balls because of muddy soil. Yes, some bunkers had pools of water but many courses in southern California just are not playable after that much rain. Thank you to the staff and course designers for a good day of golf followed by lunch in the nice clubhouse restaurant.
Too much of waiting… can’t finish and took almost 5 hours to 15th hole on weekday.
Good pace & decent greens
Played here before when the pace was slower but not this day. My husband & I finished in 4 hours 20 minutes on Tuesday with two other singles who were good golfers and regulars. Proshop staff was professional & friendly.
SLOW Pace
Tricky, challenging and rewarding course, that is in great shape, and the greens are super fair and in great shape, too. The bunkers have real sand not hard packed dirt.
Five hours and 11 minutes to play 18 holes Friday with a noon tee time , teeing off at 12:25
Great course to play if you happen to get lucky on a day that it is not slow.
Good Fun Course, A Bit Slow
I come back to this course periodically. Great course layout, course conditions are good. Expect to complete a round in 4.5 - 5 hours unless you start early mornings; not completely horrible but could be improved. We’ll be back.
Pleasantly surprised
Rio Hondo is a nice track. Very subtle elevation changes and enough water to get your attention. The bermunda grass fairways in the winter are less forgiving, but are very playable. Overall it nice to see a public course offer something different than the run of the mill setup.
The staff in the pro shop are friendly and helpful. I'm already looking forward to playing my next round at at Rio Honda.
My nephew literally lives one block south of the course. Which I didn't realize until today. No more excuses for not playing Rio Hondo more often.
RIo Hondo is senior friendly. Even though I still can play from the blues, you can play from the tees that suit your game. Next time I'm going to may my own combo tees.
