Course was in very good shape. Greens rolled very good
Best greens in the city
While the course was wet, a week of dry weather and it will be perfect. Was kind of crowded leading to may foursomes playing slow, but overall a good experiance.
Lift clean and place middle of fairway
Course just can’t dry out. Mud in middle of almost all fairways last few months. Hopefully gets some dry weather, but needs drainage work badly. Greens and sand bunkers are in four star shape, but the wet fairways just made it unenjoyable to play.
We had 2- fivesomes ahead of us that slowing down the play pace. Never see any course would allow 5 players, especially on Sat.

Great Course! The course was in great shape even after getting a ton of rain the night before. It was Carts on Path , but it was very playable
Great course!
Awesome course. Great for any skill level. My 11 year old son and I both shot a good round. The majority of the holes have water hazards but the fairways are wide and forgiving. The staff were phenomenal! Highly recommend.... A+
Aerated greens/ fairways
Normally this one of my favorite courses in the Baton Rouge area, and it is typically in tip-top shape. But today we were surprised with nearly week old aerated greens and fairways. Lots of sand had been laid down. The green were very bumpy, slow and very inconsistent. Tough outing all together but the coirse was wide open. Give it some time and this course will come back around to its quality condition.
Santa maria
Course was In nice shape. Green were rolling fairly fast and smooth. Only got 12 holes because of thunder storm, easy to get back to club house.
Nice layout, helpful and courteous staff. Course conditions are spotty. Lots of tight lines and rough patches. Bunkers not well maintained and bumpy greens. This could be a great course with proper maintenance.
Good value
The course was in better than average shape for this time of year. The bunkers need work. The greens were in good shape and putted true to the reads. Overall very good value.
Top Notch "Muni"
This is a great golf course. Picked it up on a Hot Deal which just added to the value. I was told that it used to be a country club that went under and was bought by the BR parks department to operate - You can tell that it was once a true gem, kept at the highest standards. It is still an awesome golf course with really good conditions. Lots of options off the tee and hitting into greens in the risk v. reward department, a fair amount of water that sneaks into play (use an app to see what danger lies out there). It has a good routing through a nice neighborhood that only gets cramped in a small section of the course where 4-5 holes play near each other. The only thing I thought was "off" with the course was the amount/type of sand that is used in the bunkers - have played in a lot of places, but this is the first course where I stepped in a bunker and immediately sank 8-10 inches into the sand (note for next time - don't come up short on a front pin tucked behind a bunker). While I didn't use it, the practice area of this course looked top notch with both putting and pitching/chipping greens and an expansive range.

Course was in real good shape. Greens had been sanded a few days before, but were still nice. Good round
Greens were in excellent condition
We played behind a foursome that clearly had no clue on golf etiquette. They continually hit up to 3 tee shots on every hole, even if their initial tee shot was in play. In other words; they hit until they were content. On at least 4 holes, they had approach shots around 150 yards. Once they hit to the green, they would leave the cart and walk 150 yards to the green, putt out, then walk 150 yards back to the cart, This of course, would keep us waiting, unable to tee off because the cart was in the fairway. After a decent pace on the front nine ) about 1 1/2 hours, it took us 1 hour to play holes 10 thru 13, due to the group ahead. We were so frustrated, we quit after 15 holes. Just no excuse for this.
Santa Maria Holding Up Public Golf in BR
I'm always struck when I travel to places like Florida, Texas, and the like how many quality public, city/county owned golf courses there are. Lots of choices.
In Baton Rouge, few choices that don't allow the ground to turn into concrete as the weather dries out, and Santa Maria is usually one of them.
This trip the greens were in great shape, the fairways changing over grass and were very hard, I hit 5 balls that landed on greens or in fairways but ended up in the water, seems the watering was at a minimum.
I've always like SM's layout. The Par-3's have wonderful greens, long, skinny, and from day to day are very different holes. The Par 5's usually will give you a broad driving area and then punch you on the 2nd shot. Laying up is a pretty good idea, especially for a 15 handicapper like me.
Overall, a good place to play, but with all it's financial issues, will remain to be seen if the County can keep it up.
