Course was in real good shape. Greens had been sanded a few days before, but were still nice. Good round
Greens were in excellent condition
We played behind a foursome that clearly had no clue on golf etiquette. They continually hit up to 3 tee shots on every hole, even if their initial tee shot was in play. In other words; they hit until they were content. On at least 4 holes, they had approach shots around 150 yards. Once they hit to the green, they would leave the cart and walk 150 yards to the green, putt out, then walk 150 yards back to the cart, This of course, would keep us waiting, unable to tee off because the cart was in the fairway. After a decent pace on the front nine ) about 1 1/2 hours, it took us 1 hour to play holes 10 thru 13, due to the group ahead. We were so frustrated, we quit after 15 holes. Just no excuse for this.
Santa Maria Holding Up Public Golf in BR
I'm always struck when I travel to places like Florida, Texas, and the like how many quality public, city/county owned golf courses there are. Lots of choices.
In Baton Rouge, few choices that don't allow the ground to turn into concrete as the weather dries out, and Santa Maria is usually one of them.
This trip the greens were in great shape, the fairways changing over grass and were very hard, I hit 5 balls that landed on greens or in fairways but ended up in the water, seems the watering was at a minimum.
I've always like SM's layout. The Par-3's have wonderful greens, long, skinny, and from day to day are very different holes. The Par 5's usually will give you a broad driving area and then punch you on the 2nd shot. Laying up is a pretty good idea, especially for a 15 handicapper like me.
Overall, a good place to play, but with all it's financial issues, will remain to be seen if the County can keep it up.
Best public course in Baton Rouge
Play this course when you are in Baton Rouge plays under 4 hours most weekdays.
The course is playing hard and fast. The new work on the bunkers is a definite upgrade.
Beautiful
No one in front of us to slow us down and no one behind us pushing the play. The course was in great shape I wish we could play here more often
Decent course, wonderful practice area, greens roll true
The title says it well. I am vacationing here and selected this course due to recent other reviews and location.
The layout was pretty good. Having travelled from Pa I don’t know if it was the sun glare that I’m not used to or the grass colors, I sometimes couldn’t see the hole layout. That’s a positive though since the holes did change up a bit.
The greens ran very true. They were consistent and the practice green matched the holes. I appreciate when this occurs and if I miss it’s on me.
Sand traps where absolutely wonderful. But that’s partially because new sand had been placed in most of them. Fluffy and white, and they eat the ball. Those that weren’t done yet were really bad.
I’d say this is a good decent course. I’d have no problems recommending it so I did. Enjoy !

Course was in good shape. Bunkers weren’t in good shape, but that’s because of all the rain. Really enjoyed the round
Fast play
Mid morning on a Monday meant quick playing, not many people there. Day before so much rain and the course was wet but good condition. Greens rolled true.
Bang for your buck
Greens roll great and challenging layout. For the price hard to beat.
Great as usual! Keep up the great work! If BREC took
care of all their courses like this one and Beaver Creek, that'd be great!
Play this course 3 times a week ... great layout
Easy to get on as a single and staff are great and helpful.
Awesome course. Has something for everyone
This course has beautiful straight always lined with amazing houses, and some blind dog leg holes that you have to be able to hit perfectly to stay out of danger. Some easy par 3’s to some difficult par 5’s it has it all.
Very Nice Track
We played in extremely cold conditions but the course was fun to play. It is not a very long course but the greens have some challenge to them and the course has trouble on quite a few of the holes.
This is a course that you can score low if you keep the ball in play and can make a few putts. The course has good bunking but they were under repair when we played so I really couldn't tell if they would impact scoring.
They have a very nice set up for practice and the speed of the practice area is similar to what we saw on the course.
Decent course with a few issues
Pretty good course for a city run public. Layout is nice, nice mix of easier holes with hard ones. The biggest problems are course drainage... the course was a soaked mess after it had rained days ago... and the bunkers are absolutely atrocious. Honestly all of their bunkers should be marked ground under repair they are so bad. Most of them are unplayable. Also the driving range was closed which would have been nice to know beforehand. Apparently this is a common occurrence according to locals. Overall it was a fun course but really needs new or significantly repaired bunkers. Greens were in good shape and challenging.
Great layout
The only problem was that the course did not have record of my tee time that I booked the night before @
