Great South Austin Course

For those of us that live in South Austin we have limited options for golf. Sure there is Onion Creek if you can get it on this site or go out towards the lake, but that is a long drive. I have been playing this course for almost 10 years and it is always in great shape and the pace of play is at 3.5 hours 90% of the time. If you go play at noon on a Sat or Sun it will be longer just like any course in the ATX area. Great course.

The course was in average condition overall but is expensive in comparison to many of the courses available close to Austin

Had an early tee time and the staff seemed un-prepared. After checking in went to the range to warm up only to discover the staff forgot to give us tokens for the range (after a $70/green fee). Had to go back to the club house to get tokens. The starter and marshel on the course were great and engaging during the round keeping us up to date on any changes/updates and the refreshment cart was timely. Due to recent heavy rains the course had some localized damage but had put in much work to get things back to good condition. Greens and bunkers were in great shape. Overall we played in slighly over 3 hours with a twosome which was great but we paid $70+ for greens fees.

Greens rolling good, traps need serious attention though

Grey Rock is in average condition, greens rolling and looking good but it can't say the same for the sand traps. Although we just got a ton of rain, I've play 3 courses in the area and they did not have this issue. Staff always great!

Nice Course

The course was nice and maintained. It was worth the hour and a half drive for the hot deal price. Will definitely play there again. Pretty challenging from the tips.

Fairways are in great shape, greens are in good shape, bunkers are damaged from recent flash flood.

I have played this course for twenty years. When I first played this course flowers were on every hole, and the fair ways were good after it rained, they suffered from a poor irrigation system, now the fairways are plush and hold the ball up, allowing for great second shots. The greens mowed short, making them fairly fast. Right now they look like it is fall transition to different grass. Last Saturday night the Grey Rock area received 12 inches of rain over 10 hours, flooding all the bunkers, washing a lot of sand out and some were clougged and unable drain the water out. The pace of play was very good, we never were pushed from behind or had to wait for the green to clear. We played midday on Friday. We saw many birds and 4 deer. The beverage cart only came by twice. It was a great day at Grey Rock.

Great layout. A little dry in places.

This course is an excellent value. We played on Saturday at a discounted rate and were well pleased. The staff was great and the course was challenging without being impossible. I didn't really like the gas golf carts. Overall it was a great day.

Nice layout, shaggy greens.

Like the layout of this course. A nice balance of risk and reward. Staff was nice and attentive and starter and Marshall's were friendly. Pace of play a little slow, but picked up on the back. Course conditions were a little wanting compared to courses with similar pricing in the area. Will play again.

Overpriced for what you get

The course is a decent layout, but not worth what you have to pay. Even though I found a hot deal at $49 per person,( as compared to $70) it still was not worth it. The course is very flat and the only challenging part of the course is that some of the par 4s are over 400 yards from the blue tees. The day we played, the greens were super slow and rough due to over-seeding the week before. I wish I had known that when I booked the tee time. I would have avoided the course altogether. The staff was just matter of fact and did not share the over seeding with us. We found out from the twosome we allowed to play through. Also, a course like this should not allow singles out on a busy Sunday afternoon. We let two singles play through and they must have been members as well as the twosome as they seemed annoyed that a foursome was playing are a slow 4 hour round pace. The only reason it took us over four hours was allowing the singles and twosomes to play through. My advice, find another course.

What's up with the greens?

Nice course layout with some challenging and fun holes but the greens really take away from the experience. Very fuzzy and slow.

Good course, but only at discounted price

The course and facilities were all in pretty good shape. I would have been a bit disappointed if I'd paid the full $90, but at a discounted $55 I was happy. There was no GPS. Staff was friendly. I'd go play the course again if I got the same rate.

Nice course....nice price!

Grey Rock is a nice course that thinks it should be a lot more...as with most courses it struggles with getting enough play to sustain itself. It charges regular green fees of $70 or more on weekends which maybe for the Austinites that can afford the pricey membership and over priced green fees is alright, but for those of us whom are lucky enough to play golf at all with the courses charging so much these days...lucky for us there is Golf Now. Don't think I am in any way bashing them, but I play a lot of different courses and Grey Rock is nice, but by no means spectacular as a country club experience. If you can grab this tee time for less than $40....I say go for it, but I have yet to play any golf course in my 35 years of playing worth more than $50 for a green fee...TPC San Antonio included!

The easier step-sibling of Avery Ranch

I liked this course a lot. It's more fun to play than Avery on a day when your swing isn't grooved, but it's still relatively challenging. It's in good condition as of 9/17, but they seem to have a problem with hogs scratching parts of the fairways and some issues on the greens.

There's a lot of wiggle room on this course for the higher handicappers, and there's a lot of opportunities for errant approach shots to wind up okay.

Don't let these issues deter you, as it's still a very fun and playable course.

Pace of play was great-- I saw a 5-some of retirees played a 3:45 round. Our round was 3:20 as a 2-some.

The staff was very friendly. Every marshal/starter/cart girl/etc that we encountered did a great job.

Grey Rock - a fun course

We played Grey Rock on a afternoon with a few other golfers on the course. The course is challenging but fair. Tee to green was very good as to fairways and traps being in great shape. Some minor grass issues but that's the drought we are living through. Greens were in great shape and could be tricky if cut close which was not the case due to the drought.
Overall great round on a great course..
