Do not play this course
May this be the worst course in the DMV? No one should pay more than 25 bucks and thats including a cart! The greens are basically black and you have forests growing out of the bunkers.
Reston National Is In Bad Shape
Course is in miserable shape: most tees and greens are bare, hard, dry. Fairways are not much better. Overall, the course shows the effects of a hot summer with little evidence of restorative maintenance or attention. Roughs are overgrown with high weeds. I've played this course many times for many years and never saw it in such bad shape. I won't return until I hear that it's back to proper condition. Other area courses are in much better shape.
STAY AWAY a horror
I have played Reston national since 1978 and you can’t call this a golf course anymore it is now a badly maintained cow pasture
First our golf cart broke down on the side of the first green and when we finished over 5 hours later it was still there
It was 86 degrees and all the water barrels were empty
Now the course was by far in the worst condition of any course I have ever played in 50 years
The tee boxes had sand and a few weeds just like the so called rough
Don’t bother looking for grass there wasn’t any
The fairways had very little grass and the bunkers had grass growing out with very little sand
In fact if you wanted to hit off grass you had to hit in the bunkers
Many bunkers were so neglected that they were completely overgrown with weeds
Now the greens were a joke as on every hole you putted over dried mud
This course which has always been wonderful was now a low grade cow pasture ‘ my apologies to cow pastures which are better maintained
They cut the price half but in reality they should have paid you to play it
It’s obvious to see that the new owner wanted to redo the course for housing and get rid of the course
Of course they denied it so spitefully he had just let it run down to its pathetic pitiful state as punishment to all the golfers who are duped into playing this combination of weeds dried mud and sand
Stay away at all costs because what you end up playing can’t be called golf
It’s obvious they haven’t spent a penny on maintenance
In fact there was not a single pro to talk with after the round
I don’t know how any pro worth his salt would want to be associated with this complete mess
STAY AWAY unless your a glutton for punishment
Conditions
Course used to be good a couple years ago, but it’s gotten way worse. Used to love playing here and pay $80 for it. They recently dropped the prices down but still pretty high for the green conditions. Also if you’re off the fairway good luck finding your ball. The rough is just uncut and super thick. You hit a good shot that rolls off the fairway into 6 inches thick rough. They need to either drop the prices or fix this course up.
Horrible course, overpriced
Course is in the worst condition I have ever seen. They are overcharging way too much for what the course is at the moment. Wouldn’t recommend playing here even if a tee time cost $30. Don’t play!
Horrible conditions
The greens have massive brown mud patches all over them. The course is in terrible condition overall. Tee boxes are overgrown. Lots of maintenance needed, especially on the greens.
Poor Conditions
Dead patches all over greens, tee boxes are just sandy muddy or full of weeds. Bunkers are essentially construction zones. Avoid this place until management changes or they invest money in to repairing the course. It is awful.
Course in horrid condition
Tee boxes and greens were in terrible shape. Not sure if any pesticide or any other treatment has been applied but the amount of gnats overwhelmed my group. For the amount paid to play, this was definitely not worth it. The course layout was definitely challenging but hard to really enjoy with the conditions mentioned.
Unfortunately horrible
I played here somewhat frequently as a competitive golfer in my youth. Unfortunately, it’s nothing from what I remember. The course is in absolutely horrible condition. Complete dirt patches all over the greens. Rough in some areas way overgrown leading to lost balls from barely errant shots. Nearly $80 walking on a Monday is way too much for the lack of quality. Slow play was also a problem. I knew as a single the odds were against me but it took 13 holes before a foursome let me thru. No Marshall’s at all to curb slow play. The only positives were the staff was very friendly and I love seeing the kids programs.
Sad I was looking forward to some nostalgia but the conditions were just way too awful to be enjoyable.
Place has given up
Not sure when they started running dogs out here. This course was always reliable to be in solid shape in the past.
Perhaps ownership is throwing in the towel on golf course since the city of Reston keeps dunking on their stupid ahh plans to knock down the course and build townhouses.
Would give 0 stars if I could.
Greens completely lost. Lucky to find your ball in un-mowed rough. Tee boxes are laughable.
You couldn’t pay me $100 to play this place again.
Course condition
The greens on this course are in rough shape. Standard for this time of year but unpredictable weather it was going to be soggy and slow or fast with patches of bar dirt.
Terrible conditions
Played in mid July and the course was in terrible shape. Tee boxes beat up, fairways had many dirt patches and the greens were absolutely horrendous. Definitely can find a better course for better prices and value.
Not Returning Here
Staff was rude and unhelpful. Course tee boxes were terrible and conditions on the greens were even worse. There were many delays because of people walking dog/kids on the course, since it is has parks nearby. We got delayed for about 10 minutes by a person chasing a dog on the fairway on hole 10 and because of this we were rudely asked to skip a hole on the 16th hole (par 3). I asked the staff if it was possible to return to the 16th hole to finish and was told that No. Once we finished and went into the pro shop and the staff that we interacted with on hole 16 was talking badly about our group, blaming us for delays. The marshal finally showed and asked us to pick up the pace on hole 15. Very poor management on the course from a business aspect. Lack of respect for patrons that enjoy playing and paying. I will not be returning for these reason and may more. Poor course conditions and not worth the price.
Tons of Potential
Positives
-Long course.
-Good snack bar.
-Welcoming staff.
Negatives
-Course conditions being neglected…
Sand traps are not maintained.
Greens are damaged with mower tire tracks.
Fairway/Ruff boundaries are not well defined.
Tee boxes are patchy
The worst value in Northern Virginia
This is the worst value in Northern Virginia. Course is kept in horrible condition and it gets a ton of play. They still have the balls to charge over $100 for 18. There is the chance though that you get a grassy lie inside one of the sand traps.
Don’t waste your time
There are so many better courses in the area that are cheaper I wouldn’t waste your money or time at this place. From inexperienced staff to terrible fairways, bunkers, and greens this is not the course you want to spend $85 dollars on. Gopher holes and rocks in sand traps and sitting water/ bare greens makes this course a terrible one to play on. SAVE YOUR MONEY and go to algonkian or brambleton where it’s cheaper and 10 times better. This course manager has a few years of work behind them until this course is in fair condition to pay what they’re asking.
