NOT Reston National Golf Course, but Reston National Golf Camp
So if you think you can get a quick 18 in before work, Reston National Golf Course, (I mean Reston National Kids Golf Camp) is not the place to go.
8:00 am tee times during the week. What golf course in Virginia has the Earliest Tee Ties at 8:00. Most courses offer tee times starting at 7:00. That way you can tee off before it’s TOO Hot, with no waiting, and finish 18 holes in a reasonable 3 to 3 1/2 hrs.
Not at Reston National Kids Golf Camp. They have it rigged that you can tee off the earliest at 8:00 am, play first 9 and then get to second 9 when the kids arrive at camp and flood the back 9 holes for on-course instruction.
As an example, played last week with early 8:10 tee off. Finished first 9 in 2 hrs. Now 10:15. Reston National Kids Golf Camp groups of 6-8 campers flood the back 9. So waiting for the group at hole 10 to clear the fairway and then the green. So waiting on every hole (when we should have been to first group on the back 9 with no wait). This continues , until to par 3 16th hole. Now there is a Reston National Kids Golf Camp group on the fairway/tee and another on the green. and it’s now 11:15. We didn’t want to wait behind 2 Reston National Kids Golf Camp groups any longer and quit for the day, as it would have been another 1 to 1 1/2 hrs to finish at 12:30. A 4 1/2 hr round of golf from the first tee time of the day!
Not to mention the condition of the course as others have commented on. Sand traps of mud and stones, uneven tees boxes, Fairway is Rough, etc, etc.
Nice course, decent conditions, fast greens
Not crowded, played fast when I wasn’t hacking at the ball. Staff is friendly. Conditions are ok. Had a nice outing.
Not worth the price
I was honestly pretty disappointed. Myself and a friend went out on a Sunday morning, paying 92 for 18 riding. The conditions of the course were worse than what I expect at East Potomac (if you're from NoVA- you should know what I'm talking about). Not worth the price in my opinion. You'll get better quality at Pohick, Twin Lakes or Twin Oaks.
Course needs work
Played a few times last year and was supervised how bad the course upkeep has been. Fairways are in bad shape and tee boxes are even worse. I've played many other public courses in VA and Reston is way behind. I hope they work on it because I used to enjoy playing the course.
Good and Bad
Overall it was a nice course and the inside staff was friendly and helpful. The driving rage is a good location and layout, but the lack of a place to put a tee is strange. I was told just to park Kent through the turf, but that was not a great solution. The tees were high and unstable.
Mid-way through our round we were accosted by a guy claiming to be the operations manager who seemed miffed we (a twosome) were behind another twosome, and didn't voluntarily join them. He claimed we were slowing the pace of play and threatened to kick us off the course if we did not join the group in front of us. Of course he did not tell the group in front of us that, so we had a difficult time catching up to them, and probably ruin our first two homes on the back nine. Once we joined the other group, it became very obvious the group in front of them was much more of an issue. They had one guy who kept driving the cart from one side of the fairway to the other as if he had no idea where his ball went and searching throughly on both sides. He would often his 2-3 balls, then go searching for all of them. This resulted in us waiting an extra 10+ minutes on every tee box for the one guy to clear the fairway. At one point the "ops manager" did a run through the course and watched the guy drive all over the fairway, but said nothing to him or his group. He did however spend a good amount of time watching us, I assume to assure we had indeed join the group in front of us. Overall the round took us over 5 1/2 hours to complete.
I get that courses like this are going to have new golfers who slow things down, and that is okay. I didn't see anyone, if front of us or behind us, too worried about it. However the "ops manager" and his determination to pin the entire issue on our group, and the rudeness with which he addressed us make me doubt I'll be trying Reston National again.
High priced poor play golf course
I am an experienced golfer playing many levels of courses from high end to moderate! First time playing this course. I expected a better experience given the cost: expensive for the extremely low value plus an additional surcharge for a cart
Course conditions deplorable
Forward tee boxes were unkept & mostly located within the course sometimes difficult to find , black tees were a bit better
Fairways unkept & rough
Rough was just that & appeared to grow wild & often extended into fairways Even balls hit in the fairway were unfindable?
Greens were rutted, rough. & certainly not rolled, holes were not cupped
Sand traps were not raked to begin the round & other than my team no one raked after play, rakes hard to find
Geese droppings everywhere
Signage was non existent & difficult to find next hole of play
GPS was at least available & helped
I do not recommend this course & will not play it again
I would gladly accept a refund full or partial
Not worth it for the pace of play....
Evidently, this course is known for its slow pace. Our round started out badly from the start. Got to the tee box and the group in front of us was still waiting to tee off. It was so bad that on just the second hole, one of the guys in our group already called for the marshal. Marshal said that it's the group on the 7th and 8th were the hold up and they've told to pick it up. Fine. Got to 7th hole - no change. What's their excuse? Marshal was called again, and we were told that it's Friday, it's the first nice day (really? that was lie), and pretty much nothing else they can do.
The gnats at this course are horrible. I don't mind them, but this course has an overabundance of them.
Its a public course but not well maintained tee boxes, fairways in bad condition greens soft slow & lots of ball marks. No course Marshall.
Very slow play (just over 5 hrs) cause no course Marshall & course condition was playable but not much better.
Reston National
Fairway and tee box conditions were horrible. Greens were average at best. This use to be one of the better public courses but they are showing very little care for the condition of the course.
Overall solid
After getting paired with a random 3, I found they were fun to play with. Some of the tee boxes could use some work, but other than that everything was solid. Greens were consistent. Fairways maintained. Rough not too long. The bugs are definitely present so I’d bring bug spray. Overall it was a good round.
Has Potential, But...
Needs a lot of work. Tee boxes have longer grass and a lot of sand and whomever set up the tees that day put many on downhill areas of the box. Greens were not good - inconsistent speeds, various grasses, bumpy, and lots of pock marks.
It's really a shame. Reston was a nice course 20 or so years ago. Unfortunately the upkeep has been poor and the course shows it. Like the layout, do not like the course conditions.
So much potential
Course conditions were really disappointing. We all would have been mad had we paid any more than we did for our round. The owners are in a fight with the community about turning the land into multi-family housing. One could surmise they aren't invested in keeping the course nice, but rather letting it go to trash and losing customers so they can argue that there's no demand and they should be allowed to sell and rezone etc. etc. It should and can be better. There is so much demand for courses in the area that if they'd just take care of it and price their rounds appropriately, they'd be booked all day. Unless it improves, we'll be golfing elsewhere.
Decent option for a casual round
It's a pretty average course with a pretty average price. It's fairly well maintained. Fairways were a bit spotty and greens were slow, but nothing too bad. I remember it being nicer last time I played (8 or 9 years ago) but that could just be faulty memory.
Just not worth the money!
I had the 1st tee time (7:30) so pace of play was excellent and I was paired with a good guy so from that perspective everything was great.
The course just isn’t in good shape - Fairways, greens, rough, tees are all just terrible.
If I didn’t have to be back at my house by 11:00 I would have driven further away.
Its a shame because RN is literally 5 minutes from my home.
