Its a public course but not well maintained tee boxes, fairways in bad condition greens soft slow & lots of ball marks. No course Marshall.
Very slow play (just over 5 hrs) cause no course Marshall & course condition was playable but not much better.
Reston National
Fairway and tee box conditions were horrible. Greens were average at best. This use to be one of the better public courses but they are showing very little care for the condition of the course.
Overall solid
After getting paired with a random 3, I found they were fun to play with. Some of the tee boxes could use some work, but other than that everything was solid. Greens were consistent. Fairways maintained. Rough not too long. The bugs are definitely present so I’d bring bug spray. Overall it was a good round.
Has Potential, But...
Needs a lot of work. Tee boxes have longer grass and a lot of sand and whomever set up the tees that day put many on downhill areas of the box. Greens were not good - inconsistent speeds, various grasses, bumpy, and lots of pock marks.
It's really a shame. Reston was a nice course 20 or so years ago. Unfortunately the upkeep has been poor and the course shows it. Like the layout, do not like the course conditions.
So much potential
Course conditions were really disappointing. We all would have been mad had we paid any more than we did for our round. The owners are in a fight with the community about turning the land into multi-family housing. One could surmise they aren't invested in keeping the course nice, but rather letting it go to trash and losing customers so they can argue that there's no demand and they should be allowed to sell and rezone etc. etc. It should and can be better. There is so much demand for courses in the area that if they'd just take care of it and price their rounds appropriately, they'd be booked all day. Unless it improves, we'll be golfing elsewhere.
Decent option for a casual round
It's a pretty average course with a pretty average price. It's fairly well maintained. Fairways were a bit spotty and greens were slow, but nothing too bad. I remember it being nicer last time I played (8 or 9 years ago) but that could just be faulty memory.
Just not worth the money!
I had the 1st tee time (7:30) so pace of play was excellent and I was paired with a good guy so from that perspective everything was great.
The course just isn’t in good shape - Fairways, greens, rough, tees are all just terrible.
If I didn’t have to be back at my house by 11:00 I would have driven further away.
Its a shame because RN is literally 5 minutes from my home.
Average round
Decent round but slow pace of play.
There were clear spots of ground under repair that were not marked. Not enough to severely hinder my round, but enough to be noticeable on most holes (I.e. uneven fairways, cut lines of cups, fairway to first cut, low points of course being spotty)
Overall pleasant round for a reasonable price.
Needs Some Work
The tee boxes are pretty torn up, they need to be redone. The cart path is also in terrible shape, good luck keeping a drink... The bunkers were rocky and hard (there might have been 3 half decent ones on the whole course). The greens were super slow, but looked to have been aerated recently so that should improve. The fairways were in decent shape. I wish more people replaced their divots though.
Hire a Ranger/Marshall
Course is always exquisite but like every time I play pace of play is ruined because there’s no Marshall enforcing pace of play. Round was completely slowed to a halt by a threesome walking taking four practice swings each hitting the ball 30 yards a stroke and simply not playing ready golf or being aware that they were significantly slowing play down and allowing others to play through. Also giving the two some behind us separate carts doesn’t help who started hitting into us doesn’t help. We ended up stopping at the turn and just chalking the rest of the round. The course, its staff, the facilities are all top notch which makes it so infuriating for it to be ruined by there being no Marshall on a Saturday round. It’s not the first time this has happened there, I was hoping this time would be different but just hire a Marshall.
Still early in the season....
My wife and I play this course because it's convenient to where we live and the greens fees are moderate. We got a beautiful (unseasonably warm) day and enjoyed walking the course for the first time. Tee boxes are filled with sand as the grass has not quite come in yet. Fairways were in decent shape and the greens were a little rough (just aerated). All fairly understandable since we're still pretty early in the season. I'm hopeful that the conditions will improve once the grass fills in this spring.
It is fall, but the leaves were insane
2nd time I've played Reston this year. The first time the course was in pretty good shape. This time it was completely different, but I'll give it a few excuses. 1) the greens were really bad BUT they had just been aerated earlier in the week which didn't help. 2) the entire course was COVERED in leaves so I lost a TON of balls, even when I hit the fairway or just rolled off the green BUT I actually went off before the course was officially opened so I may have been any of the grounds keepers' efforts to blow the fairways and green areas.
Five groups on a par 4
I have played Reston many times and I knew the course conditions would be poor and was ok with that for half price green fee. We started on time. By hole 2 there were 4 groups on the hole. It never got better. On hole 4 the Marshall said he had sped up the group causing the delay. It just never improved. On the 10th hole there were 5 groups on the hole. I played 11 holes in 3 hours and 51 minutes. That is 21 minutes per hole. At that point I decided it wasn’t worth it. It would have been more than 6 hours for a round of golf and with Daylight Saving Time it would have been too dark to finish. Really not worth it considering pace of play but at least cheap enough I didn’t mind leaving.
