Poor conditions
Fairways and tee boxes either overgrown with weeds or complete dirt spots.Of course was in much better conditions when I played it in May. It appears like zero maintenance has been done since then. Pretty disappointing. And certainly not worth the money.
Course is in terrible shape. Tee boxes overrun with crabgrass. Fairways also in bad shape.
Rough shape but fine
Much like all courses around the DC area right now, Reston National is hurting (hot temps and lots of rain causing burnouts and disease). Greens are actually ok but the fairways are toast, The back 9 is better than the front. It’s a nice layout and will come back with some cooler temps and some maintenance.
Going Downhill?
Really disappointed and surprised by the decline in the course conditions at Reston National yesterday. Over the years, we've probably played at least 10-15 rounds annually, although we hadn't played here before yesterday since late April, early May. Course conditions way worse. Coronavirus protections on course were lessened. Even golf carts switched out . . . GPS gone and mine felt like it was shaking apart. Hard not to connect dots with change in management . . . Now way better choices locally for the dollar. Sorry to see and say this.
water damaged fairways and aerated greens
I like the course, the people and the layout, but our timing was bad as several fairways had severe water damage and the greens had been recently aerated.
Bad Shape
The course is in horrible shape. Weeds throughout the tee boxes, numerous patches in the grass with mud/dirt, and greens in terrible condition. The first cut of rough might as well be hazard.
I've played Reston many times over the last 30+ year. This round was a true clunker, I'm afraid. While most courses are struggling with conditioning, Reston is in particularly bad shape, with lots of crab grass on tee boxes and in fairways and large burned out sections in most fairways. I paid the same $55 to walk as one of my friends did to ride :-( and the round took close to five hours due to an outing that the course failed to manage until it was too late. To top it off, the greens had just been aerated and putting was a guessing game. Despite all of that, the place was packed!
It kind of makes me wonder whether they're letting the place go to pot in hopes of getting the OK to sell the land so someone can build more townhouses.
The starter is friendly and a pleasure to see before teeing off—great tips and super welcoming. They were aerating the tee boxes, but that didn’t have much impact. Course is on the shorter side, but still can be challenging from the tips.
For the money, a good value.
Course needs help to bring it back to 4+ Stars
The tee boxes and fairways definitely need some repair and help. The greens have been aerated so hopefully they will be good eventually. Too much drainage through the fairways. It definitely needs some work to get it back to where it used to be.
Nice course, but many of the fairways were barren and the rough was uncut making it very deep in places. The course manager air-aited the greens by poking 2-inch square holes which made putting very difficult. Overall, not a bad experience.
Fairways in very rough shape
Unfortunately, 2/3 of the fairways were filled with dried, crusty mud and no grass at all. A few times I hit drives in the fairway and I chose to drop the ball in the rough and play it there. There was just no grass anywhere near my ball in the fairway.
The greens were in good condition, however, though they had been punched recently.
Give Reston a miss for a while
I’ve played Reston National more than any other course this year and really appreciated them staying open through COVID. Through Spring and early Summer, the course was in typically great shape but what on earth has happened? I played after a wet day so expected the course to be a bit waterlogged in places but put simply the course should have been closed. I walked but stood in amazement when watching other groups churning up fairways in carts on a cart path only day. A lack of marshaling may have contributed to this.
But the real crime is the state that this course has been allowed to get into. The course management should be ashamed of themselves or preferably fired. I’ve taken this off my list of courses to play until I hear that conditions have improved.
I would recommend everyone give this a miss for a while
Very Dissapointed
I was extremely disappointed in the condition of the course. I know the weather has been very hot lately, but we have also had some rainy weeks. This was our second course of the day and the other course we played was a similar price point and was in much better playing condition. Almost every tee box was in horrible condition as there was very little grass. The boxes were almost all dirt and clumps of weeds. Many of the fairways were in awful condition as well. There was caked over dirt that was breaking off into pieces instead of grass. On a couple holes the sprinklers were turned on during an afternoon round and the water smelled like sewer water. It wasn't pleasant to have to try to hit off of rock hard fairways while being sprayed with foul smelling water. I think this course will be crossed off the list of courses our group plays for a while.
On a positive note the staff members we interacted with were all very friendly.
Don’t play here unless you like dirt and crabgrass.
Horrible golf course. Fairways mostly dirt and tee boxes dirt mixed with crabgrass. Not work even $25 for a round.
Decent layout but course in rough shape rn
Convenient to get to off the toll road, right in Reston, and with a nice and challenging design, this course could be OK, but it was in really rough shape. Tee boxes with almost no grass on par 3s, a ton of bald spots on fairways. Greens OK but few fixing divots (not the course's fault). No free range balls despite high price of greens fees, pads for the range, and aging golf carts with no gps. Friendly and helpful staff. Course could be a lot better if in better shape.
Buyer beware!!!
Weve play twice a week since March.... first time playing here because it’s pricey... We honestly couldn’t believe how horrible the conditions here were. Hard catches kid and grab grass all over the fairways, tee boxes were basically dirt and leaves, and greens were full of divots. All for $100?! East Potomac looks like a PGA course compared to the shape that Reston National is in - I’m not sure how they’re getting away with this. Very disappointed and don’t waste your money until they fix things.
Burnt, terrible conditions
Almost every fairway is burnt to bare dirt. Tee boxes are all ragged and bare. Just terrible. Can not believe they are charging full price for this. The course really needs to be closed for repair.
Terrible shape
Bunkers are bone dry (and at the same time, have standing water in half of them) with weeds growing, tees are barren and slanted, and fairways are about 25% dirt.
