Awful value for price
I actually would not have as much of a problem with Reston National if it was priced correctly. I played this course on a weekday afternoon for a price of $70, which led to the assumption that, quality-wise, it would be in line with other courses in the area like Blue Mash or Whiskey Creek (both of which are actually $5-10 cheaper) which are consistently well-maintained with a reasonable pace of play. This course is basically a glorified version of East Potomac Blue (which charges about $30-35 per round at the same time/day). The tee boxes are nothing short of an absolute disaster -- patches of crabgrass overgrowth all over the place, and huge swaths of divot sand everywhere else to the point where it was difficult to find a place to tee up a driver where your stance wasn't uneven or in a divot rut, let alone hit an iron off a short tee or on a piece of turf. Since there had been a fair amount of rain in the area prior to my round, there is a level of understanding I'd have for certain conditions being temporarily worse, but this far exceeded that. The majority of the fairway grass was barren and muddy to the point where I'd have staked it as ground under repair, but at that point you'd have so much ground staked that you'd basically have to shut the course down. Which brings up another issue -- it didn't look like any of these problems were being actively resolved. None of the tee box divots looked to have been reseeded, and the crabgrass hadn't been mowed in weeks. The drainage on the course seemed nonexistent, and multiple bunkers weren't just standing water -- they were full to the point where you could legitimately lose a ball in there. The greens weren't awful -- and I'd expect them to roll a little slower and hold a little more given the recent rain -- but you could see the same level of negligence there, stuff like huge barren muddy parts where cups had been cut in previous days/weeks. I wasn't expecting a phenomenal pace of play, and the group in front of us seemed to be both inexperienced and not quite understanding of how to keep up the pace of play, but they were also waiting on a few holes, and the wait we had on every single tee box was absolutely brutal ... just round-killing bad. And their wait makes me think that the tee times were managed poorly. Which brings me to the final point about the course, which is, to be fair, entirely out of Reston National's control ... the. gnats. are. AWFUL. They should sell beekeeper hats in the clubhouse, it was that bad. I played the entire round, in 80-90 degrees, with a towel wrapped around my head between shots just to make it bearable. It was truly the icing on the cake standing on the #2 fairway, having hit two tee shots off of patchy tee boxes and another shot off of mud in the fairway, waiting 10 minutes to hit an approach shot, and realizing that I'd both been robbed of $70 and I was going to be swarmed by gnats for another 16 holes. I was legitimately tempted to walk away after nine. If you want to play a low-key round for a reasonable price, go to East Potomac. If you want to spend more money for a higher-quality course, do not do it here.
Do not play here
40 minute delay due to having no carts, course was in terrible shape. Fairways were dirt and mold. Good thing the beverage cart women was so nice.
Worst Course in the DMV
STAY AWAY, The course is in horrible shape. The fairways are over grown, the cart path has potholes, the tee boxes are horrible and they want $80 to play it. I was shocked at how bad the course itself was. The staff was very friendly and the hot dog at the turn was good though, if there is a silver lining.
Decent and fair
The course was in very good condition except for bunkers, which was understandable. Greens in good shape, fairways had very few bare spots.
Love the Course
Reston National challenges the novice player. That course is a great example of thinking your way around the course.
Great track, but conditions are lacking
Lots of crab grass growth and poor tee boxes. Greens are nice, but very thick. I will probably play here again but if the conditions don’t improve I’m likely to find somewhere else.
The course has a great layout and varied difficulty. Just needs to be kept up better. I imagine that’s tough with all the bad weather.
Solid option in northern va
Fairways and greens are in fantastic shape. Greens roll very true. Only complaint is that the tee boxes are in pretty bad shape, and the bunkers dont drain well- all were flooded and unplayable today. Staff is very friendly, especially the guy working the counter at the snack bar. Pace used to be an issue here, but I’ve played here three times this year and the pace has been perfect. Overall a fun and fair but challenging layout.
Decent course, awful practice facilities
The course itself is okay - but their practice facilities are awful. Their range is closed 3 times a day for maintenance and an additional hour on the Wednesday I went. Of the 3 times that I went, the range was closed for all or part of my warm up time every round. The practice green was constantly taken by the junior academy, and their chipping green not only rolls like a fairway but didn't have holes.
I recommend the course, but they must step up their practice facilites.
Solid somewhat old school course
I like this course. Plenty of trees, though wide enough fairways. Not much water. Several tee options. Hilly but walkable.
Course was in good shape with the exception of the sand traps which weren't in great shape.
Tee times were 10 minutes apart which is better than the 8 minute intervals they used on previous visits.
