Would only play again via 'Hot Deals'
I played this course 5 years ago and wasn't impressed. I recently played for $41 using $10 off of a Hot Deal for Sept 25, 2016 and I'm glad I had the discount code because There is NO WAY this course is worth the rack rate of $87. Most of the tee boxes are sand pits, several of the greens are completely bare in spots and the rough in several places is just unseeded mud. The bright spots are the bunkers (good sand) and the driving range...unless they've closed half of it to accommodate the two kids that showed up for their instruction classes. Thanks to a competing Redskins game, our pace of play was good (3:45). If you truly want an $87 course in the NoVa area...go play Bull Run or Laurel Hills. I would only play Reston again if I could get a Hot Deal price below $50.
Course was pretty beat up
I haven't played at Reston in several years......mostly because I would get frustrated by the pace of play. I found a "hot deal" for a weekday round so I thought I would give it another try. The pace on a Thursday was fine, but the course was in pretty rough condition. Huge clumps of crabgrass on most holes (which of course, where my ball always seemed to be), total lack of grass in places (including on tee boxes), and the greens were in pretty rough shape 2. (our threesome commented on 2 holes that actually had good greens, but that's a poor average!). Bottom line: sure glad I had a Hot Deal!
Location!
The course is pretty nice but the weekend price is way too high for what this course offers.
It should be priced at $60 for a weekend round.
But it is the location that drive the price, not the quality.
Beautiful Course, staff just ok
Nice course although the practice range is way below the quality of the course.
Also I rented clubs here and they were expensive and not good at all, different kinds of shafts in the same set and they were dirty.
Still using explosion engine carts, Really???
The course is beautiful though and the landscape amazing. Worth to play but bring your own clubs next time.
Pretty nice neighborhood course
A little pricier for what it is, but in fairness I did play on a Saturday... Joined up with a few friendly helpful locals who seem like they play the course fairly often. It was in good shape, wasn't overly difficult.
Still Great!
Played Reston yesterday. Great round as always. greens rolled great! Sand traps were in good shape! And the golf board was an extra bonus! My only complaint about Reston is because of its location it is always crowded. Our round however on Wednesday afternoon was finished in less than four hours.
Good pace on the weekend
I just played Reston National and found the pace of play to not be an issue. We had a 7:40 am tee time and walked 18 in just over 4 hours. Never had to wait. It seems what others have experienced in the past may not be an issue currently.
The course was in great shape and pin placements were challenging.
A great hot deal value
First time playing the course, and really enjoyed our experience! Jonny in the pro shop was very accommodating and pleasant and explained everything very well! The starter, Lazlo, was awesome! The other player in our group was going to be late, and Lazlo was very accommodating and just set us off and let our buddy catch up later. Good man Lazlo! The course was in really good shape. The greens were fast and receptive. A lot of area courses just make the greens firm and very difficult to reward good iron shots. The holes were cut in good locations that made it challenging and fun. Fairways were immaculate, and rolled very well. There were houses around the course, but none were that close to the course. Pace of play wasn't too terrible. It did slow down a little on the back 9, but we still finished in under 4 hours. There was a marshall out and about so I think that helped keep things moving. I would play here again, but probably as a hot deal during the week...like most nicer courses in the area, I can't bring myself to pay $75-$85 or more during peak times on weekends. I can definitely see this place getting WAY BACKED UP on weekends. Tee times spaced out every 8 minutes is not enough to give players of varying skill level enough time to get out of the way. But that is a common occurrence with places like here, 1757, and I think Raspberry Falls. But that's just what we have to live with in this area!
Nice value and close to home
I played this course because it was close by and available. Mondays many courses have outings and this one did not. The course was in very good shape, better than a few years ago when I played it. Greens were pretty and green but "fuzzy" and a bit slow for my taste. We teed off at noon on a Monday. greens may not have been mowed since weekend or before is my guess. Freshly mowed they would have been fine.
Go Play as they say.
If you're not in a hurry...
We had a nice time here Saturday. Weather was beautiful. Course was in pretty good condition. It looked a bit better than it played. Greens were lush but soft and a bit bumpy. Fairways were in good shape and rough in decent shape. There's a lot more clover and mixed grasses than one would prefer.
A couple of us tried the Golf Boards for the first time. They were fun! Not something I'd pay an extra $25 for (on top of cart fee) regularly, but definitely enjoyable. I'd certainly opt for one of these over a cart if they were the same price. It's nice being motorized (I usually walk) without having to share with another player and waste time going to their ball (not to be anti-social but it slows pace-of-play).
Pretty good variety of craft beer available in the clubhouse - much better than most courses. The fellow working the bar/grill was very fun and friendly. Almost made up for the fact that there was no beverage cart on the course that day. Apparently someone was sick and they didn't have a backup. Poor planning on the part of the course if you ask me.
Pace of play was the biggest problem. It's a challenging course to be sure, but some of the pins were too tough for a busy Saturday. The pin on the par 3 11th was on probably an 8 degree slope in the back left corner of the green. Even on average-to-slow greens, it was very nearly impossible to stop the ball within 6 feet of the hole. It definitely caused a bottleneck as the course moved better after that hole - but still took an even 5 hours to play overall. Sadly, not totally unexpected on a busy public course.
Another reviewer here mentioned the annoying ads on the golf cart GPSs. The pair in our group that took a cart definitely vented frustration over this obnoxious "feature" and they spent extra time futzing with it every shot. I doubt this lovely add-on speeds up play either. How about a pace-of-play timer instead of ads, hmmmmm?
All in all, a good experience. Would prefer they roll the greens occasionally to smooth them out and do a MUCH better job of managing pace of play. And for goodness' sake, have a backup plan if your cart girl calls in sick!
excellent experience
I've played this course many times over the past 40 years, but not within the past 5. This course used to be a really average muni track. However, the new management of the course has really upgraded both the course condition & pace of play. I arrived for a 740 tee time Friday morning with the parking lot half full, & expected a 6 hour round. Wrong. We made it around in 4.5 hours, really steady pace, no logjams/backups. Multiple rangers in strategic spots made sure of that; the rangers were really friendly. Course conditions were very good; firm turf, no burned out areas, nice tees & true greens. I would have rated the condition as excellent, but greens hadn't been cut recently, due to rain. Really an outstanding golf experience, and well worth the money. I'll play here again for sure.
GET HERE EARLY!
The course is great for a quick round before hitting the office here in Northern Virginia. The issue becomes pace, because of the courses location, it gets backed up here quick. If you get in a tee time in that 6-7 AM window, you can breeze through pretty well and have a great time. They keep pretty good care of the track, practice facilities could use a little work. Great for that $50 round instead of the $100 course.
For the most part, a good course.
Driving range was a good amenity. They had plenty of stations.
As for the course, some good and bad. The carts were equipped with GPS but too many commercials which hindered seeing your objectives. The course was in really good shape as were the greens. The only complaint was the course pace of play. A foursome in front kept waiting until the green was clear when it obvious they couldn't reach it. They were told to move faster but that didn't change the pace.
I'd still recommend the course.
Good Course
Good course with a nice practice facility. The course is a good challenge that is not overly difficult but worth the time to play. I liked the vibe of the area as they really seemed to be about their golf from the people that I met around the grounds and played with.
Reston
Course,staff and facilities are good.
Nice Layout - round was ruined by the pace of play
First the good - the course has a nice layout with interesting sloping fairways and challenging greens. The course was in good condition the greens had been aerated 3 weeks ago and were slightly bumpy but not too bad.
The round was however ruined by the pace of play - it took us almost 3 hours for the front 9 and over 5 hours for the full 18. We were waiting at every shot tee box and in the fairways.
It's unfortunate because despite being a nice course I don't think I will be returning.
Nice track, painfully slow
I went out with a customer and while the course played well - fast greens and great fairways, it took almost 3 hours to get through the front 9. We decided to call it quits after 9 holes and have lunch then head home to avoid a 6+ hour round. They had groups going off every 8 minutes and on the first tee alone there were 3 groups. Our foursome waited an average of 10 minutes per shot, per hole and it was an absolutely brutal pace of play. It was 80 degrees and sunny so that made up for some of the slowness but it was a very, very slow 9 holes. I'd love to go back because the course plays well and the layout is great but they have to do something about the abysmal pace before I go back there with so many other courses in/around D.C.
Nice Track, But...
Start with the pros:
The course was in very good shape. The greens rolled very true and were in good shape. Fairways were in pretty good shape, with some inconsistencies in the rough around the greens. If you drive the ball well, the course is not that difficult because you'll be hitting short irons into most greens. But challenging to get it close. This is probably one of the nicest public courses in the DMV. But I'm only marking it 'average' because...
Cons:
PACE OF PLAY!!! We played on a Sunday, and sure its to be expected that the round may take a bit longer. The only reason we were able to finish in five hours was because we rushed the last four holes in probably 25 minutes to beat the sunset. The round definitely would have taken five and a half (the front alone took three hours) if we hadn't rushed, if not more. Simply put, the course overbooks tee times on weekends. If you're playing late afternoon on a weekend, buyer beware.
Maybe too popular on a saturday afternoons?
I chose this course because it's close by and I got a good deal on GolfNow -- I don't know if I'll go when its amazing weather and a Saturday again though - it was jammed and as a twosome, my buddy and I waited 15 minutes a hole easy. Still had a good time -- its kept really well and people are nice there.
Very 'ok'
It's very close to my house, so it's a course I play if I'm short of time....... That said, the pace of play is very slow on weekends, so I might as well drive an extra 30 mins in some instances to play somewhere nicer. Course conditions are never that great, the layout isn't very exciting and it's not a very 'pretty' course. Overpriced at full price, just provides a close option to get out and play.
